Great episode, guys! I really missed Colin and the interesting and serious topics he brings to the table. First, let me say that I'm Canadian, and I really love the US, and the majority of Americans I've met are wonderful people. However, I have noticed a distinct, seemingly intentional, ignorance in many of the Americans I've met when it comes to general awareness and respect for the culture of other countries. I spoke to someone in Boston, for example, who honestly didn't know that there was anything northeast of Maine. He thought that Maine was the easternmost landmass of North America. I met an American tourist in Italy who honestly thought the ancient architecture of Florence was pitiful compared to New Jersey's artesian wells, and went out of her way to keep saying it as loudly as she could to everyone around her for the whole day. I think that image of "Proud to be American to the point of disregarding anything non-American" is what may contribute to the Anti-American sentiment.

I'm an Egyptian, currently living in Canada, and visited the states multiple times. In the Middle East there's definitely anti-americanism, but I would say most of it isnt a hate for the country, its culture, its people, or the ideals it stands for (we try to achieve them ourselves the hard way). Most of the hate/dislike comes from the governments foreign policy, inconsistent military interventions, support for dictators in a lot of occasions, and occasionally doing stuff that they would denounce others for doing in the name of democracy and peace. Beyond that, I doubt alot of us actually HATE Americans, we know there's a difference. And in the end the government does what it does to protect its interests and the interests of its people, which is what every country should be doing its just that some countries are better at it. (P.S: I love Georgia. Georgia is gorgeous, just had to put that out there)

It all comes down to how many interactions you had with people from other countries. I'm Mexican and have interacted with Americans for many years now due to my work and, even though I've never visited America, I hope I can one day. But then there is the other side. I have friends that hate Americans just because the way they were treated by them and I totally understand it too.
@JIPunisherIL9 жыл бұрын
I fucking love America and that's coming from a silly Swede! I went to Texas in 2013 for my first trip to the US and every person that I interacted with was super nice. Never have I had so many friendly conversations with complete strangers as I did then. That's probably because Sweden as a people (not all, but most), are so fucking cold towards not just tourists, but strangers in general. Great episode, loved the Star Wars discussion!

I have ZERO problem with Americans, I actually have family in Oregon. Noting that, i find it clear why many countries stereotypically are anti-American. The main reason is as Nick mentioned, you are seen as a greedy corporation that goes to war and massacres innocents purely for gain, political and fiscal. The second most I believe is the generalisation of American arrogance. Americans, more than any other nation, are known to talk about how great their country is, even Nick had to get it in. Often in the media you see Americans act as if they are the only country on the planet, calling NFL and NBA titles as world championships and all the celebrities there as the most famous people while there is likely Asian people with triple the fame. None of this bothers me (the sports thing does annoy me I admit) but it is very clear.

I think that all these side stories could be told in cartoon fourm. Clothes proved with clone wars they can make a good cartoon. And rebels is pretty decent as well. But if they created a series where they jumped around in the time line. Telling all these back stories through two or three episode would really bring everything together

Scarpino nailed it. He understands why some people don't really like America/Americans. Also you don't need to harass anyone unless he himself starts to harass you. Be kind everyone, it costs nothing. P.S.: I don't think there's more irony when someone is using his Mac and chrome browser to belittle an American, than for example an American belittling someone from Italy or Greece, when those cultures gave the basis and scientific vocabulary to the Western world. So please be kind to each other.

Glad Colin brought his topic up, now imagine that but instead of criticised for being American imagine getting look down upon because of the colour of your skin happens everywhere

It's all relative to be honest. Colin mentions how he had never experienced prejudiced based solely on who he was and minorities face just that he in America very frequently. Granted, that's a conversation for another time. But I can see why people from other countries might not like us Americans, we can be boisterous, we can be ignorant, and abrasive. For all intents and purposes Colin is right, America has given much to the world and not just financially but culturally as well. The United States is the standard that most countries strive towards regardless of our failings. On America's worst day, we're still pretty better off than most countries on their best.
@BoltCRNA9 жыл бұрын
Gustavo Castro I was just going to comment the same thing. I feel like ever since World War 2 America has been the clear "super power" of the world. Most people of the world wish to model us or just pick up and move here for "The American Dream". I honestly have not heard of a single other country that has the rest of the world attempting to move to it for a "better life" like I experience daily in the USA. I really don't understand how anyone could argue against that? Perhaps anyone who doesn't understand that perspective should move to the US and see how frequently people from all over the world come here just in hopes to become a citizen. debate over.
@fenndesigns9 жыл бұрын
Gustavo Castro People don't hate America for no reason. All you have to do is look at what's gone on the past week and a half to see reasons why you would want to stay far away. It's really easy to say that you have not felt hated for where you are from, when who you are is a white, male, American citizen. There are many people who don't feel comfortable in the U.S. because of where they are from, their skin colour, their social status. I'm not saying these issues don't exist elsewhere. Maybe it's my perspective from an outside country, but there seems to be a few issues that people could have with the America. America is not a bad place, but you need to be self aware enough to acknowledge that you're not perfect.
@gus67369 жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly with your point of view. The United States is far from perfect, in fact I think they are quiet as few things that as a nation, as a society we need to fix internally. Having said that I genuinely believe that in many aspects the United States is still a very powerful and influential country that has given much to the world.
@fenndesigns9 жыл бұрын
America has given a lot for sure. And I enjoy my time in America every time I visit it. But I would not want to live there. Colin seems to hang a lot of his argument on what America have given pop culturally. I personally feel that is the least important thing a country can provide. Fix the quality of life first.
@BoltCRNA9 жыл бұрын
Umm.. I would argue that the quality of life is so extremely high that typically Americans tend to be spoiled 1st world babies. In fact in America we believe that everyone deserves to live comfortably for 120 years. In fact most Americans expect a fancy car to drive, fresh chilled bottled water everywhere we go, high quality fresh food served to them immediately and courteously, free healthcare, free higher education, luxury homes for everyone, higher pay scale than any other place in the world, etc. I'm not saying that this behavior is positive, it's part of the reason everyone wants to more here. Although it creates extremely self centered, unable to do any labor for ourselves, demanding world citizens.

Interesting discussion on the Anti Americanism personally i have no real problems with Americans and found them friendly whenever i've been there or seen them here in the UK. However i really wish you guys would stop calling the UK, England and the British, English. I think the anti-American sentiment that you talk about is more from the way the nation itself is projected not necessarily by you as citizens but by the media both here (UK) and there. Even if you put aside all of the wars and atrocities committed by American (and the UK) you're still portrayed as this larger than life "MERICA FUCK YEAH" don't have to listen to anyone, "it's our way or the highway" kinda thing. I think it's understandable that people might dislike both of our nations based on our actions as even if we are not actively doing it to them we also arn't actively doing anything to stop it either.
@VernonParker9 жыл бұрын
Greg, Nick is more correct than you are about why other countries tend to dislike Americans. Some of what you said contributes to it but mostly the things Nick says is true.

I enjoyed Colin's topic a lot. I was just like that lady from Iceland. But I understand that every American is different. The only thing I cant stand is that Americans say "America is the greatest country in the world". I live in the Netherlands. I'm proud of being Dutch but I will never say "The Netherlands is the greatest country in the world". There's not a country in the world who's the greatest. Every country has things that someone hates or doesn't agree with. As for the people outside of the US. They see America as different countries. For them you have New York, Mid-West, Washington and Hollywood which is run by companies like Microsoft, Google and lobbyist who only care about money and making profit.

Jeez they spend so much time talking about Rogue One. I wanted way more TFA discussion. I get that Rogue One is kinda cool but the way they're fawning over it? Like, we know what happens. They raid some place, get the plans, and rebels died to get it. It's like a simple "Commando" type of movie. How the fuck are you more excited for that than TFA - Luka, Han, Leia returning in BRAND NEW stories on top of BRAND NEW characters and settings? It's old, but 100% new. I honestly couldn't care less about Rogue One. I think that story could be dealt with in Star Wars Rebels.

Why is it that every time you guys talk Star Wars you bash the prequels? You guys have all the right to think what you want of them, but can we step off the prequels, even just a little bit? There are Star Wars fans that like and even love the prequels. No, i don't believe they are perfect, but I still love them just as much as the OT. Even if the movies have issues, the Prequel era has brought us the gems that both The Clone Wars and Rebels tv shows are. Please keep talking Star Wars, but just please stop beating the dead horse.
