"To defeat an enemy you must know them...Not simply their battle tactics, but their history.... philosophy... art." Thank god they kept one of his main characteristic, he's a master strategist who use culture and art to find strenght and weakness in enemies ! I guess Dave Filoni was a fan ! The man who play the long game...

Filoni most certainly was a fan. He described the period from after Return of the Jedi to the publication of the 1990s Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn a 'dark time'. He most certainly had read the novels.

I like that at least in this continuity, it's unclear if Thrawn gets furious because of the prospect of the kalikori being destroyed or whether it's more the "twilek trash" sentiment, since that's the line that sends him over the edge. He's an alien serving in the Empire, based on his outlook he clearly doesnt share the hatred for other species and has probably borne the brunt of that feeling multiple times himself. Personally I think it's the latter, "twilek trash" is when he snaps but when he composes himself again he apologises and makes it sound like it's just his passion for art and history speaking.

I think it's both. Both the act of destroying the kalikori and dismissing the merits of an entire race are actions born out of ignorance and would probably be infuriating to a man like Thrawn who attempts to use every tool at his disposal. Let alone the fact that he's an alien in an organization who holds very anti-alien beliefs.

Although Season 3's Steps into Shadow was Thrawn's debut, this episode provides more emphasis on Thrawn as a character and how much of a dangerous adversary he is to our heroes as he's smart, cold and strategic, so he will be a threat to the Ghost Crew and the Rebel fleet in the next several episodes. Plus Lars Mikkelsen does a phenomenal job voicing Thrawn. I remember when fans of the character and the original Thrawn Books were excited when Thrawn was announced to not only be brought back in Star Wars canon for Rebels, but also bring back the original author of Thrawn Books in the 1990's Timothy Zahn to create a new series of Thrawn Books for the current Star Wars Canon.

I love watching the 5 seconds of Thrawn, going full psycho, given that he's almost always portrayed as being cool, calm, collected, even polite and respectable to his enemies. Just a little hint that if you push someone hard enough they'll snap, as well as showing just what it takes to get under Thrawn's skin.
@smiddlehurst1
@smiddlehurst1 3 жыл бұрын
I remain absolutely, 100% convinced that Chopper's line after being told to go get the explosives is some variation on 'I get to be Sabine!'... Also they really did get Thrawn so very right here. Absolutely terrifying enemy yet you can't help but admire the sheer awesome he tends to bring with him wherever he goes. For those that haven't tried them yet the new Thrawn books (two sets of trilogies, one dealing with his Empire days pre-Rebels, the other his time in the Chiss Ascendancy that's on book 2 of 3) are really worth a go. Fascinating to see how Zahn builds him up from a much earlier point than we got to see much of in his original Legends run.

God i love that entire sequence with Thrawn just asserting his dominance over Literally *EVERYONE* in that room Including Slavin lmao. It obviously doesn't taken a genius to deduce what thrawn did but i love the slowwww burn of revealing he already knew. - Hera was wearing Pilot gear. - There was a Scout Trooper in the middle of the base when Scour troopers are only deployed for Reconnaissance. - Earlier in the Episode a Scout Trooper went missing...which surely would've been in a report. -The big ass Painting with a girl that looks like hera. The Kalikori being in Cham's office, and a Twi'lek stealing the kalikori only means that this particular prisoner must be cham's family since it is so priceless to family. Slavin says he increased Security as per Thrawns orders but he doesn't know why... The increased security blocked off Hera's original escape route. So the only way for them to escape is to leave the same way they came in...but thrawn had anticiapted this so he waited at the entrance and caught them escaping. So i think the entire purpose of thrawn capturing Cham Syndulla's home was to see if Cham would actually break into his home to steal back the Kalikori because it is, as Thrawn put it, *Priceless to Family* since Thrawn had studied Twi'lek culture. I'm not even sure its meant to go THAT DEEP lmao but i still get a kick out of it feeling like this was all part of Thrawns plan. But Then we actually get to the interrogation which was just fucking amazing. I love how he is literally schooling EVERYONE in the room. You've got Slavin, an extremly ignorant Imperial completly dismissing the Native beings of Ryloth as "Trash" and "servants" and calling their possessions " Primitive Native trinkets" which blinds him to the obvious. Then you've got Hera, a competent leader who knows how to maneuver and fool imperials by putting on the Ryloth accent to make it seem as if she has lived along with the other Twi'leks. Then you got Ezra, in a scout Trooper uniform in the middle of a base where a Scout isn't needed. Thrawn slowly explains that he knows of the Object that she stole. Salvin is confused Hera is shocked Thrawn begins to reveal that he knows that she must be a rebel and deduces what Hera's experiences are as a result of surviving the clone wars and that explains their fighting spirit against the Empire. -Slavin is confused x2 and throws out one more ignorant "Peasant" reference -Hera knows her cover is blown I also love that Hera was smart enough to know that she had been outplayed as well. She just just DROPS the act and delivers one my favourite lines in all of Star Wars; *It doesn't matter where we come from Admiral, our will to be free is what's going to beat you* SUCH A POWERFUL LINE. Slavin is Angry and confused x 3 And Thrawn just lays out that Slavin is embarrising him infront of their host Slavin is at PEAK confusion saying *WhAt* Then Thrawn delivers my favourite line in Rebels *Allow me introduce, Hera Syndulla, Rebel pilot, Freedom fighter and Millitary leader, daughter of your nemesis, Cham Syndulla* Its such a simple line but its EXPERTLY delivered by Lars who voices Thrawn. Then Thrawn Stuns Ezra. God i love this scene so damn much. I think its my favourite in All of Rebels.

The scout trooper costume has the gun holster on the foot instead of on the hip which is why Ezra looks so awkward when trying to draw the blaster. At this point in the story, it is kind of a flaw that he tried to hide like that and didnt just run in undisguised with his lightsaber instead.

"Kalikori" is a word that first appeared in the 2011 Star Wars Legends video game Star Wars: The Old Republic as the Kalikori village, a Twi'lek settlement on the planet Tython. According to the in-game codex, the village was named after an old Twi'leki word for "beginning."

I have watch Rebels and listened to all the canon Thrawn novels that have been released and have now just started Heir to the Empire. Thrawn is much colder, angrier and more menacing in Heir to the Empire then any of his canon appearances. Much scarier. I love him in canon; He scares the heck out of me from Legends.
@rev0568
@rev0568 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I feel that actually makes sense. He would've gone through a lot to get to his position, and beyond that, he would've likely still faced a lot of BS as a part of the imperial navy whole being an alien. I know Heir to the empire isn't canon, but Rebels takes place about a decade or so before when those events would've taken place doesn't it? I feel Thrawn we see in canon is very much how heir to the Empire thrawn was at first, especially because we DO occasionally see his temper flare up. I imagine he likely had to be more visibly calm as well before the fall of the empire, else his position would be more at risk. A human officer or Vader could get away with it, but an alien in an anti alien imperial regime? Not likely. Sorry about the long ass reply, just something I thought made sense. We're likely to see Thrawn be a lot more angry and ruthless than ever before in his upcoming return :)
@zomish13
@zomish13 2 жыл бұрын
@@rev0568 I agree, I think when we see Thrawn again, he will be that angrier character. I fear for Ezra and what has happened to him, alone with Thrawn. We might see a very different Ezra too. They definitely can justify creatively this change in Thrawn's personality. 10 years he will have lost and I don't see him taking that lightly. We saw flashes of that anger in Rebels, but I suspect in live action he is going to be scary.

Much like Fire Across The Galaxy teased Vader's involvement with Siege Of Lothal properly showed what a MENACING BASTARD Vader is, so does Steps Into Shadows and this episode (Hera's Heroes) do this for Thrawn. And after seeing more of the House in BB this episode hits like an unexpected Force Push. The Captain, is typical of Imperial Arrogance (such as the Admiral mouthing off to Vader in ANH) and Thrawn nearly pulled a Vader on him. Now we see the ratcheting up of the tension
