I think it's a form of PTSD if I remember correctly, how one copes with the traumas of war. There's also the fact Thrawn's race is raised to suppress any form of public emotional displays, both positive and negative...Kind of like Vulcans, and for the same reason of being quite a passionate race under the glacial surface. There's a reason Palpatine made him a Grand Admiral, y'know. He was a brilliant tactician and commander, but he could also be ruthless to attain victory, and thus was a very dangerous opponent. Here, he's dealing with the sabotage and malfunctioning equipment in a coldly efficient means, by scaring the bejeezus out of the workforce to put them in line, as you're not likely to put together a dodgy piece of equipment if it's your life on the line by being forced to test it the brink yourself. It's definitely in "cold hearted bastard" territory, but it's better than the usual Imperial way, just shooting the entire workforce and bringing in a fresh bunch of conscripts/slaves. It wasn't right to do, but that's war, you do grisly things in order to fight them and try to win, and that's why they shouldn't be fought unless it is the literal last resort. Anyway, getting back to Thrawn, he could be cold, and he demanded a lot out of his troops, but he isn't strictly black-and-white evil, he's just really good at his job, and that's why he's such a good and cunning antagonist. On the flipside, he respected his troops and often incorporated their ideas into his plans instead of dismissing them out of hand and looking down on them like most Imperial officers, and he made them proud to be Imperial soldiers, and in return he got their respect and they fought like demons, harder than any other units, for him.

What I really like in this scene is when you couple it with the books you see just how cunning Thrawn is. He does not know for certain who is a sabatour, but he looks at the workers and deduces that this person, given his history, is one most likely to sabotage equipment. He then allows him the opportunity to test his work and gauges his response, knowing that he will hesitate if it is sabotaged and not wanting to risk his own life on something he knows is compromised. The worker does exactly this and so he has just confirmed that he is absolutely a saboteur and can be made an example of. Had the worker not hesitated and the same reaction with the speeder overheating happened, Thrawn most likely would have let him power it down, assuming that perhaps someone else might have tampered with it and this man was innocent (much like the previous scene where he made sure to confirm that the worker was the one responsible for the walkers construction before testing it). But none of that was necessary as Thrawn had deduced correctly. Man he really should have been the villain in the sequel trilogy!

I disagree slightly. Thrawn imho knew THIS guy was responsible for the speeder's performance. He specifically asked the guy just for confirmation, and to test his reaction (if the guy had said "err well, I've been tired, so I think so but not sure" etc maybe Thrawn would have reacted in a different way. But there was no doubt for Thrawn that this bike was this man's responsibility and not someone's else. And he knew it was faulty. I'm just saying that where we disagree is the fact that you think he doesn't know WHO is the saboteur, while I think he fully knew. It's sure also that the bike, here on show, was previously inspected and the empire saw the sabotage.

@MathiasDante018 жыл бұрын
I don't think Thrawn is a psychopath, just incredibly ruthless, pragmatic, and effective at his job. In his original incarnation he was known for killing people, just not often as someone like Vader. This was perhaps best exemplified in a pair of incidents surrounding the tractor beam control pit. During his campaign against the New Republic, a tractor beam operator, Cris Pieterson, aboard the Chimaera was responsible for allowing Luke Skywalker to escape capture. Thrawn investigated the incident and found a defiant Pieterson disrespectfully refusing to claim responsibility for the incident, referring Thrawn to his commanding ensign. Thrawn summarily had the man executed at his post in a rather brutal fashion by Rukh, and informed the ensign that he was free to train the next replacement. On the other hand, when Skywalker escaped a similar trap again, he rewarded the new tractor beam operator, Rejlii Mithel, with a promotion to Lieutenant because the man had employed creative thinking in his attempt to capture Skywalker. So it should be noted that Thrawn probably knew the bike was sabotaged by the worker on purpose and killed him to make a point that further attempts wouldn't be tolerated. This is very much in Thrawn's character.
@benrussell-gough12018 жыл бұрын
Thrawn DID say that the bike had been inspected by the worker. Either he was the saboteur or he was in on it. In any case, the Empire strikes me as the sort of government that would punish sabotage with death (and likely the execution of the saboteur's family too as a 'deterrent to future acts of rebellion'). However, this death will go down on the records as 'accident during quality control testing' and there will be no repercussions to the worker's family. Hell, they may even get a bereavement pension from the Empire! So, in some ways, Thrawn did the guy a favour!

Because they are too weak, unorganized, divided and don't see the greater picture. He also saw how flawed the Republic was, first hand. Thrawn was born into a civilization where unity is *far* more than just some loose practice on community / groups scale. Which is why they are so effective in military matters among probably many other things. He has all the wisdom that makes an great and effective military leader. Here, enemy combatants, basicaly terrorists, were saboutaging his faction and killing their troops in the most deceitful ways possible. Thrawn makes sure that doesn't happen again. He gives them their own medicine, and not in an excessive way. He makes an example of one so that the others will cease their murdering and in return are allowed to live. No further blood is shed. Disney had the easiest job of all time: release a new trilogy of an already beloved franchise to fans who have been waiting for years to get a new episode. And they could have gone the easiest way to achieve this, by turning the likewise beloved books by Timothy Zahn into movies. Not only do these books tell a great story, but they include the only character in the complete SW universe, no matter if canon or legends, which comes close to Vader in terms of beeing admired by fans. Wouldn't that have been something?

It still amazes me that the workers at the factory seemed so certain that nobody in the Empire would have the basic pattern recognition needed to notice that all those exploding bikes came from the same place. They honestly got off easy, your average imperial commander that suspected sabotage would have just killed every last worker there (because they can't be bothered to work out who is a rebel and who is loyal and its not like there aren't plenty of slaves to replace them with) as opposed to killing a single guy in a dramatic point making execution and shutting down sabotage by setting it so that workers have to personally test all equipment.

Thrawn doesn't kill out of pleasure, but to make an example or to further his plans. He rewards those who thinks outside of the box and use that creativity to aid the Empire, he gives second chances to those who failed so they can learn from their mistake and be better in the future for it. What he despise are those who blatantly lie to him, those who try to hide their failures rather than face them or those who show disrespect towards the enemy. He favors honestly, loyalty and creativity. That was the reason why he was so well respected by those under his command and that was why he was so effective.

From what I've read about thrawn, hes actually quite an empathetic and understanding character. A teacher, and inclusive leader. Obviously in rebels we see him as the bad guy. But in the book thrawn ascending, we see him as a highly efficient being, with the skills to solve complicated issues. The awareness, knowledge and appreciation of culture, art and strategy. He has real connections with others, and a fierce loyalty to the ascendancy. A psychopath, or sociopath he is not.

He's not a psychopath at all. Why this title?
@benrussell-gough12018 жыл бұрын
Whilst Thrawn's entire skill-set stems from his ability to understand how others think and will react, it is only an intellectual understanding. However, he doesn't understand people's emotions very well (indeed, this has screwed him up on several occasions, most notably whilst trying to manipulate Hera and her father). That 'manipulative but unable to empathise' is a key psychopathic trait so, yes, Thrawn may be a high-functioning psychopath. However, it is just as possible that it's a Chiss racial trait. It's a mistake trying to apply human psychological norms to a Xeno.
@morro1908 жыл бұрын
I don't think thats quite a right assessment. In the books, he was shown to be quite capable of understanding others emotions. And it was quite clear in the episode about hera and her father that he was expecting something akin to what happened. Thrawns downfall in the books was due to him not calculating the possibility that the nogri loyalty was compromised, otherwise he would have wiped the floor with the rebels.
@Nerfreoum8 жыл бұрын
-Ben Russel-Gough: He totally understood Hera (that she would come back for the kalikori, that she has a rebel spirit, etc) and her father and he was just studying them. I don't see any psychopath trait there at all. All the other imperials and even her friends didn't expect her to blow her house either: are they all psychopaths for you?

Darth Yaoi You're trying to justify Thrawn's action but it makes him look like a psychopath. Yes the engineer deserved it but Imperials normally conduct themselves with etiquette not barbarism. He should let him off the bike, had the guards drop him to his knees and executed with a blaster.
@zachprynn25456 жыл бұрын
It really is all a matter of perspective. Thrawn is a good soldier and commanding officer of the Empire and to him Rebels are traitors that need to be given the hard clenched fist rather than nuance. With this demonstration he not only dealt an execution but showed others that such acts will not be tolerated and that they would end up the same way. While extravagant and "flashy" I would hardly say barbaric, it was a cold and calculated execution of a traitor and a warning to others. A basic execution would not have delivered a powerful enough message.
@lilcolgatevert37156 жыл бұрын
Zach Prynn Fair point, but as you say its all perspective. We know Thrawn's character; we, as an audience, can gather a more encompassing perspective on his character so we know he's not a psychopath. But to these are imperial engineers and imperial officials such an act can be seen as barbaric and crass. Many leaders unfit commit acts like this with disregard for their actions. I understand your point but I feel a more nuanced approach would garner enough intimidation without Thrawn appearing either weak or unstable. A standard execution would suffice to accomodate an equilibrium between the spectrum.

The military actually controls most of the Empire. It has the highest amount of not only corruption, but atrocities committed. They view civilian casualties, even grossly high ones, to be acceptable and will use even the cruelest means to enforce the Empire's policies. It's the reason so many imperial officers and personnel defected to the rebels.
@SpadesNeil8 жыл бұрын
Even Thrawn, one of the Empire's more reasonable, least (if at all) corrupt commanders, still views civilian casualties as an inevitable part of war. He doesn't take pleasure in it if he's anything like his Legends counterpart, but he also isn't going to go out of his way to avoid civilian casualties if it's the best way to win a war.
