In 1995, when the writing staff of the anime: “Gundam: The 08th Mobile Suit Squadron” convened to write the show, they had a display cabinet in the writing room filled with Gundam model kits from the early 80’s, and would often put the models on the table and arrange them into little scenes to dream up the show’s plot. The more I watch “The Mandalorian”, the more I am convinced that the shows writers are doing the exact same thing with a display case full of classic Star Wars toys.
@BiggestDawgEver3 жыл бұрын
Just like the producers of Star Wars : Rebels clearly played a lot of the Star Wars Role Playing Game by West End games. The character archetypes, planets, stories all harken back to that game. No wonder when the game was instrumental during the early years of the expanded universe, they were the go-to reference library for all the authors of the books and comics. It was actually the RPG that named all the cantina aliens.

@GrilloTheFlightless3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I can understand why Kenner made this in blue. On screen it always looked blue to me, before I ever owned the action figure. I know now that it is brown and I’ve seen footage of the costume close up in storage. It’s definitely brown. But it just looks dark blue on screen every time I see it. I’m guessing it’s the way the scenes were lit or something. The best bit, as a child thinking it was blue, was at the time there was a big craze for parka jackets with fur-lined hoods. We all had them as kids, and mostly they were blue. So when we saw ESB we all thought we looked like Han Solo (except the occasional kid who’s mother got him a green one). So it was quite disappointing as an adult to find out it was brown all along!
@bhop00733 жыл бұрын
It looks blue to me, always has. I never knew it was brown until now, but I think the reason is because it's usually got a lot of snow on it and snow looks light blue in the shadows. 🤷♂️
@luxorjr3 жыл бұрын
This has all the hallmarks of the blue/gold dress image from a few years back. We interpret colour based on the surroundings and the time of day then make allowances. Resultant of this quite complex computational interpretation by our brains is an incorrect series of Han Solo toys!

At 2:12 you said the Masters of the Universe toys were just toys, with no content and no mini comics, but FYI they definitely DID have mini-comics when they first came out. My brother and I bought that whole first wave (and this right when they came out, before Merman, Teela, etc. had even come out). These early figures definitely had the comics, which we read a LOT. They were cool because there were characters in the comics (Merman, Stratos, etc.) that did not have figures yet. So, when those figures came out it was like "!!!" Those comics were one of the cooler things about that toy line at the time. When the cartoon came along a year or so later they had removed a lot of the edge from the comics, added Orko and Prince Adam and we thought it was corny because we were more into the style of those comics.

An inaccuracy that sprang up in the toys then later perpetuated the inaccuracy in other media and collectibles is Zuckuss only having 1 glass canister attached to his head. In Empire Strikes Back Zuckuss is symmetrical. Everything on his left side is mirrored on his right. The tubes, pouches, eyes, vents, etc. Because of the lighting its difficult to see from many photos but it looks like he only has 1 glass canister attached to his head when he actually has 2. Matching ones again 1 on left and 1 on right. Over the years the toys that have tried to include more detail only put in the 1 canister. So again and again in statues, toys, posters and comics we only see 1 canister. Its a detail that even people who decide to make the costume in the 501st legion discover and have their minds blown. Isn't it weird growing up and knowing something from the start but over time mistakes or changes get repeated and what you knew 40 years ago becomes something completely different now?

2:40 Just to concur, it's a shame no one seems to remember the radio dramas. The adaptations of ANH and ESB are *massively* expanded compared to the original movies, and for a very long time, all the story expansions were considered canon. (Until Rogue One happened...) It's also interesting hearing well-known actors do different takes on the classic characters, like Brock Peters as Vader, or John Lithgow doing Yoda. (The ROTJ adaptation, unfortunately, happened many years later and was far less creative. It's basically just a straightforward adaptation, with only a handful of "new" scenes that were mostly cut material from the early script drafts and novelization, like the sandstorm scene.)
@spectorcreative18724 жыл бұрын
Oh i know. The ROTJ adaptation was less spectacular. Although it did have nods to Shadows of the Empire. I am planning a video about it in the near future.

For Max Rebo. I never had one, but saw him walking through the desert on Robot Chicken. I never knew he was a puppet. It looked like somebody in a suit in the movie. I'm gonna have to fight you on the wampa fact; a man named Des Webb portrayed the full-body wampa in Empire Strikes Back (he was a large man on stilts, so the creature was massive). But anyways, if you look up behind the scenes shots of him in the full suit, it's remarkably similar to the Kenner toy. It's safe to say Kenner had adequate reference material from Lucasfilm, despite the wampa costume being all but removed from the film.

If I had to explain the Max Rebo discrepancy in-universe, I would say that his species goes through different life cycle stages like a frog. The two-legged version would be like a tadpole, and the "elephant" version would be the adult. Also, him having flippers would indicate he would normally live in the water, so it must really suck for him to live on Tatooine.

If it takes around 3 years for a toy to come out - from planning to toy shelves - how is it possible for Hasbro to have come out w/the Imperial Troop Transport in The Mandalorian so quickly? Meanwhile, there have yet to be figures made of popular characters & creatures like the Bluurg & Kuiil in The Vintage Collection line?
@DetectiveBarricade4 жыл бұрын
Considering that it's based on the Kenner toy, Hasbro was probably able to shave a considerable amount of time off of production by looking at the original and scaling it up for The Black Series.

@@spectorcreative1872 - Why didn't they do the same for the Bluurg or the Mudhorn or IG-11 or Kuiil? Instead, we now have figures that are only now coming out or soon to be out that are no longer part of The Mandalorian series. Heck, Hasbro already has the tooling for vehicles like the speeder bikes, which were prominently featured in seasons 1 & 2, (nevermind the biker scouts who pilot them), but have yet to make it to market in the TVC The Mandalorian branding. Toy companies complain that kids aren't buying toys, but when companies like Hasbro have the gift of a popular TV show like The Mandalorian, & they don't capitalize on that, they have no one to blame but themselves.

This is the second video of yours I have clicked on because the topic is of genuine interest to me and once again your lack of research needs correction and clarification. First of all the Troop transport was later released without the electronics as the Sears exclusive; Imperial cruiser. It's first Canonical appearance was not in the Mandolorian however. It was clearly depicted numerous times in the first season of "Star Wars : Rebels" and a toy was created to reflect that aesthetic years before the Mandalorian.

I find it odd how they have never had Anakin use a yellow lightsaber, since it was his lightsaber that Luke used in Episode 4 and the one Kenner made. Now Luke has gotten a yellow lightsaber in the recent comics, but Anakin has never used one, heck even Clone Wars which had references to the Kenner toys never had Anakin welding a yellow lightsaber despite there being Jedi guards who had yellow lightsabers, granted they were double bladed sabers, but it would have been neat. I haven't even found fanart or fan edits of Anakin with a yellow lightsaber.
