Unfortunately that's one of the main criticisms I've heard about this game: the single player campaign. It works well as a tutorial for learning the basics for multiplayer; however, story-wise it falls flat and shallow. Your squadron mates will throw in random bits of individual backstory in a seeming attempt to providing some depth; unfortunately, the comments have almost zero relation to whats going on, and add little to the story.

As a veteran of the old school Tie fighter I still remember having to bob and eave since it took just two hits to down a regular Tie and three to down an Interceptor. I feel like there is an unspoken, unspecified, completely ignored upgrade to this particular squadron’s ties just for titan squadron…. Possibly by unknowingly copying the diy style of the rebels for upgrades all based from the home star destroyer - they do have garages and maintenance bays on those things … Minus that…. Would have been perhaps more tie fighter esk to instead upgrade the flimsy fighters with extreme jamming equipment to ruin rebel targeting - forcing rebels to try and get on tie tails to get a clean shot minimizing the chance even for potentially fatal glancing shots meanwhile if the tie pilots are smart, they would avoid head on passes and instead sprit around to rebel tails playing to the fast and loud style of the Tie

I mean, really, 1:18:31 where we meet the cool guys. On a serious note though, the Imperial part of the campaign in my opinion was way better done. For example, all Imperial characters have better backstories: - Grey is a veteran, calm and collected and having seen what war is and what it can cost. A great leader who inspires his subordinates and lifts them up. He accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge which he is more than willing to pass on to others, and is looking forward to the end of the conflict. - Sol is the daughter of senators, having firmly been raised under Imperial ideals, is a completely loyal, and a strategic member. She is willing to do anything in order to secure her family's vision regarding Empire's future. This is proven by her unflinching belief in victory during battle, even at unfavorable odds. - Shen is also a veteran, although less lucky. He has seen a lot of combat, maybe even more than Grey, and it has taken a toll on him both physically and mentally. Realizing his appearance would offset any chance of retiring and living in a social environment, he walks the only path where he fits in: war. - Havina (Vonreg) is the daughter of a noble family, having lost her brothers who served in the 181st, losses which could have been prevented. This made Havina a no nonsense individual, resenting bureaucratic leaders who don't care about the cost of a victory, and has a deep hatred for Rebels. She also very quick to lose her cool. Dialogue between them was also much better written. Compare this to characters who were racing pilots.

I agree that the Imperial pilots were well done, but I personally prefer the Rebels. Frisk was pretty fun to talk to, and I liked that Gunny is like the "Big Momma" of the squad. were getting there at least this time we didn't switch sides, but I feel you, I think what everyone wants is a Star Wars Empire game, were the empire doesn't really look like the bad guys, I mean even with Titan squadron everyone felt like the antagonists.
@martinp31664 жыл бұрын
@@JRDShamrock I personally didn't really see Titan Squadron as simply 'antagonists' or simply 'evil'. Grey is a disciplined and responsible leader of his team, as we also saw in the cinematic 'Hunted'. He is even friendly and a tiny bit witty when he welcomes Titan 3. Sol wants to see the Empire reestablish the Senate, so the Galaxy can have a more stable and competent political system - rather than Palpatine's "absolute rule". She's also a reliable squad mate along the whole campaign. So she's not just a regular Tie grunt, but a woman who fights in order to make the Empire better (from her perspective) Shen is the strong and quiet (or straightforward) warrior type, who never backs down from fighting on, even while his body barely hangs on through cybernetics. Vonreg on the other hand can be put into that box, but I think a lot of past events made her in to the vicious killer she is. For one she has felt personally betrayed by seeing even former friends leaving her to join the Rebellion, and she also lost most of her former squad mates during the battle of Endor. However, she will fight hard for and alongside her fellow Titans. But of course, I am not here to deny or defend the Imperials skewed ethics or their preference for authoritarian rule over the Galaxy. But I think it's good, to sometimes see a more nuanced view of the two warring factions in Star Wars, and that it isn't simply black and white. Many Imperials were mostly just regular people, who fought for the Empire because they believed it provided them with the best opportunities, security, order and prosperity. However, that's not meant to excuse evil acts, but to point out that not every Imperial was an evil cartoon villain. I will admit however, that I prefer the aesthetics of the Empire rather than the Rebels. But ultimately yes, give a proper Empire story that shows a more nuanced look, rather than another Iden Versio... A good story driven Thrawn game would be a + in my book.

@@CABRALFAN27 Rebels stay rebels. The New Republic and Luke's jedi is destroyed. Han goes back to being a smuggler. Luke's jedi is wiped out. Palpatine is back. Another evil Skywalker follows Vader's path. We get another desert planet hero who is the offspring of another sith lord who REALLY saves the day. Luke, Han, Leia, and Vader's actions in the OT accomplished nothing. They died failures for Rey to really be the hero instead of giving Rey her own victories, they undid Luke and Anakin's to give to her. Prequels were setting up the OT. OT was about how the rebels beat the empire and defeated the emperor... until we learned literally nothing changed. They're just another failed generation who pissed their victory away. It completely ruins these movies and the franchise for me.

I like that the imperial characters have some sort of distinct personalities to them, but at the end of the day, it still feels like they're bad guys, only bad guys with some different flavors. I like most of Titan Squadron (as opposed to Frisk being the only cool character for Vanguard) but I hate to see star wars still painted as purely black and white. It just isn't entertaining and it's certainly not realistic. I even liked Captain Kerrell but she also clearly gave off that "empire bad" vibe. Can we stop with the evil imperial characters?
@generalofchaos51744 жыл бұрын
They don't really look evil when you compare them to other imperial characters though. Maybe they sound like it at certain moments, but when you listen to their dialogue during non-combat, it's not a black and white picture at all. Grey even vocally expresses he isn't sure about the methods that the Empire uses at one point, but he ultimately thinks the empire is the only government that can bring order to the galaxy. And if those methods work and save imperial lives, then he is all for it. His background as a cop means he's seen a lot of bad stuff, and he points out that the red tape preventing him from arresting killers and smugglers was one of the reasons why he joined up; to make a difference. Shen is a very neutral character. He just doesn't know any life other than being a fighter pilot. Sol is also a person who thinks the empire is needed to bring order to the galaxy. Sure, she might sound like a snake by always mentioning how titles get you influence, but that's because she comes from a family that had a big presence in politics. And she isn't wrong either. I highly doubt the New Republic senate would be any different. Vonreg acts like a bloodthirsty killer, but that's only towards those who deserve it; traitors who caused suffering for her friends. Don't forget that she had to watch a lot of her former squadron die to rebel pilots. In her case, it's just a matter of vengeance. Captain Kerril is the same in that regard, but on the other hand, she simply does what is required of her. Her former squadron leader's betrayal hit her hard on a personal level, and effectively stonewalled her career progress. She even displays good traits like cooperation and concern for her fellow imperials, and is very supportive of Titan Three, going to the point to even praise the pilot's accomplishments directly to Sloane. She knows the pilot also suffered because of the betrayal, and wants the best for her/him. Whenever she acts "evil", it's mostly because of her anger directed at Javes or incompetent and selfish officers. Destroying civilian transports for example may seem horrible to us, but that's the empire's strategy; simple as that. Besides, there's no clear "geneva convention" that tells us what is a warcrime in the Star Wars universe either. What stood out to me during the attack on the dockyards, was Hera asking Kerril to spare the "civilians/engineers' on the unarmed transports. In this scenario, I think Kerril made the right choice. Those transports were being escorted by rebel corvettes, and a dockyard is a military facility; not a civilian one. In other words, the people on those transports were clearly affiliated with the rebels, and wanted to escape a battle. You're not just going to allow the enemy to do that. Sorry for the long rant; didn't really mean to do that. Just wanted to say it's not black and white at all, and the imperial characters have actual motivations this time around.

The real issue is that you are talking about showing 'good' in a faction known for its genocidal, civilian murdering, mustache twirling corrupt villains who make it a habit of ruining lives. Clearly the rebels aren't all filled with bright eyed hopeful innocents youths, and the Empire isn't crewed by ALL evil, but they pretty much made it their standard to be bad. Its really hard to paint them in a good light without introducing enemies that you WANT to hate. Now, if they gave us an Imperial set of missions where we are doing what the Empire was SUPPOSE to be doing (dealing with pirates, terrorists, unsympathetic rebels, and other criminal scum), then they could actually come off as a firm but understandable faction. I actually ran a SW RPG where the players were Imperial, and changed a few things so that, at least this section of the Empire, was pragmatic and usually ignored the entire 'Tarkin Doctrine' because it was stupid and would lead to problems. They got to be legit heroes and they enjoyed that, because they never had to worry about killing refugee groups, or ripping apart planets with satellites. They got to fight enemies that the average person could feel good about fighting. Sadly no Star Wars game has yet embraced that particular idea. If they gave us Rebels we could hate, Commanders we could like, and missions where we feel like we are doing more than trying to kick puppy dogs, then you could have a good Imperial Campaign.
