This is a story that I've begged for. I want to see members of the Empire either be taken seriously. I hate the Disney polarized form of the Empire: Either bumbling idiots or Evil for the sake of evil. Here we have a pilot that cares about his unit, is smart, ready to sacrifice himself, and wants to see justice delivered.

I've always felt like there were no "good guys" in star wars. The rebels killed millions on the death stars and on Starkiller. The Jedi became war mongers, and the Republic slowly grew corrupt. Edit: This comment has haunted me for many moons so let me make one thing clear: I am not saying the Empire is good, just that the rebellion could be as bad as them

@@CouragelessOne No. don’t add moral relativism to Star Wars. There are good guys and there are bad guys, that was the intent. The rebels were rebelling from a tyrannical empire ruled by a megalomaniac described as a back he of essential evil, the rebels were good the empire was bad that is it. Also the Jedi were never warmongers?

All the items you mentioned already existed in the old Tie Fighter games though. You wanna slow but don't want to lose energy efficiency? Divert power to weapons and shields from the engines (certain Ties have shields. If not, it's just between engines and weapons) (there were 3 energy bars with limited energy distribution. Average was equal but that was weak all around. You fit the according to your playstyle). So, it's more like they putting elements that already existed in previous iterations into their trailers.

As brilliant as this entire thing is, what strikes me the most are the little details. The way the Captain follows orders without any protest and abandons the attack run, it’s perfectly in character with a squadron leader. They need to enforce rigid discipline to have any chance of surviving - given the lackluster state of Imperial fighter tactics - and he probably wouldn’t want to commit any of his pilots to a run where they’ll be under fire from at least two warships the entire way. Then the captain of the Overseer (I assume that’s who she is) actually having a sensible strategy and choosing to preserve her remaining assets and retreat rather than fight against terrible odds. And when Grey (I think that’s his name?) goes to rescue the TIE bomber, it shows the kind of bond that starfighter pilots have. The Rebels and the Empire probably had very similar ideals in that regard, considering the insanity of taking cheap fighters into space and trying to destroy warships. The scene in the wreckage with Grey powering down all his systems is fantastic. There’s not a “power off” switch for every system, he has to individually deactivate everything and rely on what looks to be passive radar (since it isn’t constantly pinging). This is great, passive radar wouldn’t be picked up like active radar would on sensors, so it makes sense. Then the TIE Interceptor starts failing, and the pilot doesn’t seem immediately worried. He’s calm due to extensive training, experience, and the fact that his life support systems don’t require a fully-sealed cockpit unlike the X-Wing. The descent through atmosphere is gorgeous, especially the bow wake. And the quick transition into atmospheric dogfighting is equally stunning. It’s reminiscent of modern dogfights when they’re WVR. Shows off the maneuverability advantage of the Interceptor too, as well as the speed advantage. The water trails from the ion engines are great. They’re spiraling like trails from an actual jet engine, unlike those seen in The Force Awakens. Beautiful stuff. Finally, the way that the TIE slowly tips down when power is lost, and how it just flies to pieces upon contact with the water. And how the Captain looks like he expects to die. It’s so accurate, which is something that you rarely see from Star Wars. The TIE doesn’t just drop and start spinning, it falls forward gradually because it has to have been designed for atmosphere as well as vacuum. And without a FBW system to keep it stable, aerodynamics takes hold. As a final note, it makes me so happy to see that the writers/CG artists chose to keep both the eyes of both the TIE and X-Wing pilots covered until the end. A lot of media will try and humanize one side while demonizing the other just by showing or not showing eyes. As an easy example, having the visors of Rebel pilots in the OT be see-through while the Imperials used fully-enclosed helmets. By putting both pilots here on the same field, the viewer is left to judge them in more unbiased way. To see them both as pilots fighting for their respective sides. Edit: Rewatched it, forgot something. The Rebel pilot taunting/insulting the Imperial pilot - who stays silent - again makes total sense. The Captain is focusing only on keeping his Interceptor up and surviving, plus he’s been trained to essentially act without emotions in combat. The Rebel is a lot more...shall we say, open with his feelings. And obviously he’d despise his opponent, so the spite works perfectly

the PC controls killed it for me. I get that it is intended to be a flight simulator, and that a stick is the way to go, but it really sucked just not being able to fly and shoot with mouse, you had to pick between flying around or being able to kinda aim kinda straight, and it's a shame because the rest of the game was super cool.

It's amazing that they managed to completely reverse the Rebel/Imperial dichotomy in a seven minute trailer like this. A desperate, underdog Empire being driving back by the victorious New Republic. An X-wing pilot coming across like a vindictive asshole chasing after a wounded foe that can't escape anyway while the TIE pilot is the hero, trying and failing to save a wingman at risk to his own life before taking on and defeating the X-wing pilot. And even if Squadrons is a complete and utter failure (which I don't think it will be) it did give us this awesome trailer. My hats off to all the people that have worked on Squadrons and this trailer.

I love how they reverse the storytelling techniques of making the Rebel the emotionless, near-faceless enemy, thereby dehumanizing him the same way those techniques dehumanized Imperials in the original trilogy. I like to think this detail is kind of a callback to the Tarkin comic. Tarkin challenges a young imperial to fight him in order to "toughen" him up and set an example to the rest of the imperials. But the young man hesitates and after showing him his scars all around his body Tarkin says to him, "You think you can opt out? We're fighting for survival against rebel traitors who would murder each and every one of us in our sleep and dance on our graves. Now stand up and fight or I'll kill you where you squat." It's this type of thinking and propaganda that was taught to every loyal imperial and we finally get to see it in the perspective of a tie fighter pilot. I guess a bit of it in BF2 too. You can really tell that Grey thinks these rebels fight without honor and they're ruthless.

The Empire is supposed to be Evil, and the Rebels are supposed to be good. They new movies made a few points out of this, and many fans hated it. barunedpat That’s because times have now changed. Back then during the original trilogy, rebels were seen as heroes by the mass. But these days, rebels are seen as evil who practice terrorism. @HiddenPalm
@HiddenPalm 4 жыл бұрын
@@enskje No. Star Wars is more complicated than that. The original trilogy was about redemption. You even see it in the the original script, where Vader joined forces with the rebels to stand against imperialism and for honor. The prequels was about the rise of fascism, imperialism and the long road towards evil paved with good intentions. War. The Sequels was about the roots and the balance between the light and the dark. Family and truth, intertwined with a revisit to standing up against imperialism and again, redemption. Star Wars was never just about good and evil. It was the hero's journey drowning in complexity and always ahead of it's time. Always.

There’s 2 things I like about this. First, they chose to show this in the perspective of the empire pilot instead of the rebel’s. The rebels were always portrayed as the good guys and the empire were always shown as the bad guys. However, this time, the gave the “bad guy” a face so that we can see the fear and desperation in his eyes and sympathize with him whereas the “good guy” had his eyes covered by the visor and remained stoic the whole time. At the end of the day, both are pilots fighting for what they believe in. The second thing I like is that they chose to show a tie interceptor instead of just an ordinary tie fighter. Tie interceptor pilots are generally more skilled than your typical tie fighter pilots.

It was a flaw of Star Wars from almost in the beginning. I think too many people were involved. The Force was suppose to be like the Taoist religion. It's dualistic and mystical. The fact they keep saying there must be balance in the force also comes from Taoism. But in Taoism the Dark side is not evil. Some theory stated that The Emperor was doing this for a good reason. That he was trying to prepare the galaxy for an invasion, that Admiral Thrawn warned the Emperor of. but Disney wiped away the old books.

I think the reason why Han Solo left Leah, because the New Republic refuse to help liberate Kashyk. Also , you should understand, the force, is based on Taoism, and the dark and light do not correspond to good or evil, and considered necessary. Jedi philosophy is to bring balance to the force, not to have the light side over run the dark. Although, Star wars screw that up. .

@@titan_tanker The Empire was never wrong. The Empire was the legal government of the Galaxy. Voted in by Senators who were voted in by the people. The Rebels were literally terrorists trying to topple the legal government without the support of the people. Many of the plots Disney created to make the Empire look worse often were nonsensical. Why would an Empire shoot itself in the foot by plundering from itself? The only thing that made sense was anger over the destruction of Alderran but even that should have been easy for media to explain away before the Death Star was announced. They would simply make the Rebels sound like Alex Jones.

The X-Wing not having the same re-entry effect is also pretty interesting, since that ship has a shield that, in addition to doing what you'd expect it to do, also significantly reduces atmospheric drag. The Interceptor doesn't have that sort of shielding and therefore legitimately burns in the atmosphere like, well, everything that exists in the real world. In-universe consistency is just as important as realism.

I think you mean Gen Zs. Millennials are the largest, most skilled, and educated group ever 🤣. Boomers ruined the nation that was handed down to them. Useless Gen X are forgettable and did nothing to reverse the mistakes their parents did. Millennials actually get sh$t done!
