If you like this show you’ll absolutely love this 40-second scene from Star Wars Battlefront II: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ3KeGV7g7xod8U (the 2005 game not the DICE one.) Most of the cutscenes from this game are just objectives, or discussions about the specific Jedi with some foreshadowing (you find out Ki-Adi Mundi was getting the Death Star laser unknowingly when he died, which is interesting), but *then*, when you reach Coruscant here the pace suddenly slows to a halt. It sadly isn’t canon anymore, as Clone Wars depicts the clone personalities really differently compared to the end of Clone Wars, among other things. I also like how it’s the original actor for Jango and the clones (and now Boba), instead of Dee Bradley Baker who voiced all the clones throughout Clone Wars.

I agree, but he was never meant to. Umbara was meant to be a retelling of Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness, heck the sound editor of Apocalypse Now was the director of the second episode. General Krell was an interpretation of Colonel Kurtz. He goes mad with human ambition but also recognizes the inherit darkness in war that the Jedi/U.S.A. don't understand. He's killed at the end, ideologically victorious because to kill him is to recognize and give in to the darkness at the heart of man. Krell is more simplified then that because the Umbara arc really focuses on the Clone's character arcs, but the core of his character is the same as Kurtz, so he has to die at the end for the themes to hit home and to complete Dogma and the Clone's character arc. I will admit though the reason they go to kill him is pretty weak, they just say a huge Umbaran counter attack is coming but then it doesn't because the episode runs out of time.

He'd just be another evil guy.

I think another point to think about with the Umbara arc is how expendable the clones are. Their military doctrine allows Krell the right to put clones in front of a firing squad during battle or ongoing conflict. And because they are clones, each one can basically be replaced with another look alike with the same skill and training. So there is another risk factor for the clones in terms of how easily they can be dispatched without hurting the progress of a campaign.

On an interesting note (seeing as Doug mentioned Dooku), in both the 2003 Clone Wars series and this particular Clone Wars series, Dooku was voiced by Corey Burton (who also just so happened to voice Cad Bane). Mr. Burton is a very prolific voice actor with a lot of talent (so much so that Christopher Lee even once noted how spot on Burton’s impression of his voice was). He’s even the voice of Disney characters like Ludwig Von Drake (still currently voiced by him I might add), Captain Hook (he even voiced him in “Return to Neverland and is also still voiced by him), Zeus in “Hercules: The Animated Series”, Gruffi Gummi in The Gummi Bears” (he was brought in after Bill Scott’s death), and of course Dale and Zipper in “Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers” (I believe he’s still Dale’s official voice actor). His other noteworthy roles include (but are not limited to): 1.) Brainiac in Superman: TAS (and the vast majority of Bruce Timm’s DCAU). 2.) Ansem the Wise in the Kingdom Hearts series (he was brought in due to Christopher Lee’s health problems. 3.)The Dinks from “Spaceballs” (he was uncredited). 4.) That high pitched voice that Judge Doom from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” had after he was revealed to be a toon. 5.) Invisibo from “Freakazoid”. 6.) Professor Hugo Strange in “Batman: Arkham City”.

I knew Darth Maul came back in Clone wars before I got to the episode (I watched the whole series when rebels came out) and when I heard it I rolled my eyes. I've always hated how star wars plugged in fan favorites that were favorites for small reasons just to say this person was in it (looking at you Boba!). But what they did was sooooo good! And I LOVE his arc in it and rebels. He offers SO much insight into the Sith and into why people would switch and we can actually feel for him and understand him a bit. He's a tragic villain and it's GREAT!

Also a "fun" fact about the Umbara arc. When the General makes the clone troopers kill each other, one of the troopers killed is from one of the earlier episodes, where they find that Twi'lek child and protect her. You can regonize him by the helmet because it references her. So...rip beloved character we actually got to know. Just another soldier as far as the war is concerned.

I think the overarching plots were nice and refreshing at the time. It's always my favorite when you have a normally episodic show but then inbetween they give you these mini arcs to slow things down, get you more immersed and invested, do things that wouldn't work with just one episode.

Season 4 is insane good...The war on Mon Calamari...The Umbara arc with Pong Krell....THe Zyguerrian slavers....The double agent mission of Obi-Wan giving more doubt to Anakin against the council...But most importantly...DARTH MAUL !!! For a guy who had 4 lines and a cool design in episode 1, they really did a crazy good job with him and Sam Witwer is just perfect ! It's just the peek of Clone Wars, except maybe the final 4 episodes...
@MrMarinus183 жыл бұрын
Those Umbara vehicles are so insanely cool. They really feel completely unique and they really only appear in that 1 arc. Say what you want about George Lucas but he really knew to come up with innotive, interesting and awesome designs. It's something the sequel trilogy really misses. Not only are the Umbara vehicles cool looking they also are functional. The catepiller is a lightly armored skirmish vehicle made to quickly take out infantry, the walker tanks are heavy bombardment vehicles with not only shields but heavy armor as well. The also have defensive turrets to keep infantry away and a massive cannon to blast apart rival vehicles. The ships also just are cool. With Pong Krell though I thought it was wrong very early on. I mean he's making horrendous tactical decisions. Attacking a fortified base head on with nothing but infantry is a really bad idea. To attack a fortress you need heavy vehicles, artillery and air support.

Ventress Dark Disciple arc was made in to a novel after the shows cancelation 2. @anthony76973 жыл бұрын
That thumbnail pretty much told me exactly where in the series you were (cause I can't remember at times which is what season) but that was pretty clearly Maul's return and 'how to get the attention of the Jedi'. I remember the first time I was watching the season was on demand or the like, I had to rewatch certain parts cause I was like 'wait did they really just do that?'. Cause I mean - as it is the pretty clear setup that Maul does what Anakin does later is dark, showing the PG rated version of Maul executing civilians complete with bodies falling and making it clear they have no heads - damn. This season and the next - it pretty much shows you what you need to know when you get to Rebels what is Filloni doing his thing, and what is basically company order episodes. Cause much as Filloni can do light and funny, it's a certain style that works with the darkness around it.

@@expendableindigo9639 I was a younger lad when I first saw RotS. Decades later, I'm older and I still don't really understand why the scream is being hated. The umbara arc and Maul’s return were by far two of my favorite arcs in the whole show
@joshuaweston44893 жыл бұрын
Glad to see you enjoyed Season 4. This one has several good arcs. The four part Umbara episodes, the Obi Wan undercover missions, the slaughter of the nightsisters at the hands of Grievous as a true killing machine, and of course the return of Maul. As far as the episodic vs narrative arc thing goes, I feel it's a risk/reward thing. I think the arc based episodes are more satisfying overall since they give more time to expand on the characters and story. However, this is only a good thing if the arc is interesting. If you get one that's not as captivating, (the water world) then you know you got at least three episodes worth of what you got. Fortunately, most of the Clone Wars arcs are really good. I think the series would be at its best by having three or four arcs per season with a handful of one off episodes peppered in between said arcs. Some of the one off episodes can be really good and concise. Cloak Of Darkness, Lair Of Grievous, The Hidden Enemy, Trespass, Assassin, A Friend In Need, The Lost One...etc. So yeah, I think a mix of both with more of an emphasis on the arc storytelling is the way to go. Anyhoo, good review!
