It is frustrating when people keep rhetorically asking "Is the movie perfect?", because it sounds like they are insinuating that the originals are. None of the Star Wars films are perfect. None of them are masterpieces. Take off your nostalgia googles and you will see them for what they are, incredibly well-made, extremely fun, smarter-than-average blockbusters. Nothing more, nothing less, and by the sounds of it this film is just as good as the original films.

Empire honestly gets pretty close. But you're right. I agree with one of the guys in the review. For every imperfection in TFA I can name 5 things that make up for it. This movie delivered despite the hype.

My opinion is no less valid than those who constantly hold the original trilogy to a ridiculous level and then criticise any movie for not being as good even though the likelihood is it is as good or maybe even better but people wont admit it because they have 30 years of nostalgia and familiarity with the originals that they don't have with this film.

Yes, but so was this one, in my opinion just as good! and it will get even better when the next movies come out . People say its a rebooted story, but its a story that makes sense (Obviously we woundn´t just got back to the state things were before, loyaslists to the empire would always remain). That being said i do hope that they now branch out into a different storyline wich i think jj will. I acctualy loved that they started with a common base to A New Hope. there is so much space to grow and im really exited to see the entire trilogy

I dont see what the big hype is about. Its an alright movie, nothing special. I think people give it more credit than it deserves just because its Star Wars. The effects are better but the story is predictable copy-paste of 90% of movies and the characters are not really all that unique. Its all been there done that, they just redo the same shit they know sort of works. Its an OK movie, but it doesnt stand apart from any other CGI clusterfuck. Had this been anything but Star Wars it wouldnt get anywhere near the reviews it did. There is nothing to spoil. Its exactly what you think it is. Good vs Bad, as always, and Good wins. Big surprise.

+RJ Lee What's amusing is that this is a formula that is used over and over and over since man learned to write and be creative. When Disney announced they would be throwing out the EU, people raged. When it was said Lucas wouldn't be involved, people raged. Again, amusing, as the EU and the prequels were incredibly weak. You know what you missed in this film? The fact that 95% of the effects are practical. Here is a complete list of what was CGI: two characters, the sun, a weapon blast and a few impossible to shoot angles for flight sequences (hyperspace, aerial maneuvers, etc.) Here is a complete list of what wasn't CGI in the prequels: like four actors. And your good versus evil reference probably forgot a few points in this film where it was pretty clear the only thing the good guys won was another day to live because I'm pretty sure a few people elsewhere in the galaxy would disagree with you were they not too busy wondering why the sky is red.

The characters are good and I enjoyed the humor, even the hokier bits, but the problems stand out a bit more for me. There's a fair number of problems it has with its storytelling and execution and I didn't like how rushed it felt. it's barely over two hours and I think an extra half hour would've given it some more space to work with, let us drink in those scenes the video mentioned a bit more.

There were some clones alive around then, but they were all a lot better and not seen in the movies. The clones were superior in every way to average humans. AuthorityCat Well here they are children taken from birth. Raised by the First Order and they go through training and indoctrination and such. It happens sometimes that the troopers starts to deviate from the indoctrination and shows signs of free will, like Finn does. He is lucky that Poe is taken capture so they are both able to escape which sets everything off. Also, Finn's name comes from his assigned number FN2187.

As SPOILER FREE AS I CAN: I just saw Star Wars. Here are my thoughts, I loved it. However, my brain keeps nitpicking certain things. The main bad guy.... OMG ultra powerful to ultra weak within the span of the movie. It felt like they had a good villain and then Disney made him like every other Marvel villain - the weak villain that can almost be forgettable. It also felt like they had a A New Hope checklist and scrambled it and made this movie. Pacing was amazing! I did not want it to end.

I was so hyped for her character when I saw her in the trailer because she looked like a total badass. Saw it last night... I thought it was.... 100% J.J. Abrams. Agreed on almost everything except the bad guy... Weak, very weak... Didn't even come close to the menacing presence of Darth Vader. I will have to say that just like Jurassic Park, this one will be enjoyed & loved by the new generations... I think Avatar will be displaced from number one spot in the box office; I estimate $2.8 to $3 billion (worldwide).

It bothers me how many people complain. First they say the prequels are not enough like the original trilogy and now they say this is too much like it. Is anyone ever happy? I loved this movie regardless of what people think.

I am not a huge star wars fan. I love action movies as well as great dramas. The Sar Wars The Force Awakens is a beautiful blend of both. It complimented the original three without dwelling on the political disaster prequels. In my mind, I give the new Star Wars a solid 8 out of 10. It's great in both action / adventure, and in emotional drama.

People keep on saying that it's nostalgia goggles probably doesn't even realize that they're the ones blinded by it. I came into the theatre cleansing my palette of the previous movies and left with great satisfaction as I left the cinema. The biggest complaint I've seen haters bring up so far is that's a clone of Star Wars(relabeled later as "A New Hope"). I see the similarities, and to be honest, I think it's clever how they were able to showcase the story so well. Hasn't any of the haters ever heard of "History repeats itself?". The real "fanboys" are the ones who refuse to accept a great movie for what it is, thinking there should have been a better story. The story format is amazing, you know why? Because The original trilogy was also a knock off. George Lucas wanted to do a Flash Gordon film but wasn't able to secure the rights and made Star Wars instead with a similar story

Why is everyone complaining about this movie? Imo it is one of the best Star Wars movies ever made, our favourite characters return to the series and I really got that "Star Wars" feeling while watching it. Of course it has some flaws but the originals also had flaws? The storyline is a lot similar to a new hope but it was still very exciting throughout the movie and I was always wondering what would happen next. (Some spoilers) Why is everyone who didn't like the film complaining so much about the plot? What the hell were you expecting? A complicated, original, deeply-woven story, or a character-driven film that focused on introducing the audience to these completely unknown heroes and making us like them (successfully, might I add)? Part of the reason why this takes after A New Hope so much is so that we know this film is indeed Star Wars and not just another CGI-action hack. This film FEELS like a Star Wars movie should. And mostly all the homage is done really well. Sure, there's a lot of it, but it gives the movie so much heart that the saga was desperately missing. If you really want to get into it, the original Star Wars' plot was a bit of a copy-paste of the classic adventure films of the 40s and 50s, not some deep or overly complex drama. But because that classic story was done so incredibly well, it became legendary. This film does what it needs to: tells a twice-told (but timeless) story while setting up a whole new chapter. Look forward to VIII for a complex plot. Or would you rather have watched another numbing clusterfuck of space politics and emergency chancellor power-play bullshit? That was original AND complex.

Honestly I also felt the conflict between the first order and the resistance was forced. So there is a new Republic that allowed this wanna be empire surface and build a planet. Who is the first order oppressing? Who is the resistance trying to save? Felt no connection to this conflict the we did the rebellion vs the empire in A New Hope. Nor did I feel a threat from their base. I feel Starkiller base was only there for one scene in the movie to serve as symbolism. Honestly, I loved daisy Ridley and Harrison did a great job but I eel like this was a high quality big budget fan fiction film. George Lucas isn't perfect but you can definitely feel his absence in this film (not talking prequel comparison). Thoughts?

Here's my problem: the movie doesn't stand alone. It stands on the shoulders of the previous movies. Anyone going into the theater, without seeing the other ones, hasn't got a clue what's going on. Which in return brings the premise of the movie down a couple of notches. Comparing it to classical music, it would be the same as being dropped into the 3rd movement of a symphony, then having to leave before the 4th.

It makes you relive the experience of the old movies, while only presenting expectable outcomes and obvious plot twists on its own. Still think most of the movie was good, JJ Abrams really delivers on the space setting and dogfighting set pieces. I just think it could have been a whole lot better, and I think the old ones is holding it back. I could get into further details about the connection to the force only applies to the skywalker dynasty, but lets leave it there for now ;)

The story for the movie had a lot of throwbacks to the original trilogy but still had it's own unique story to tell. It could keep the old fans invested and satisfied while introducing Star Wars to a new generation. Superb review! JJ Abrams delivers a great film. Thoughtful, engaging story-line, believable characters due to performances with genuine emotion, realistic landscapes due to filming on-location (with minimal use of CGI). Some aliens as minor characters but the focus is kept on the human characters. Newcomers Daisy Ridley (as Rey) and John Boyega (as Finn) are absolutely stellar. The whole cast is great. Best quote to respond to this Screen Junkies film review: "It's true. All of it."

The only thing i can say is that Dan's expresion gives it all way the movie is not spectacular but is manageble. the characters seen to be forced to bond to each other for no apparent reason it reminds me of my mom watching soap operas and also of the HOBBIT were the king becomes mad instantly with no build up to the moment so are the new characters i wont ad spoilers cuz i hate them but be warned go into this movie with less hope for a great performance from the new actors mainly because of the directors in my opinion not the actors themselves.

In the end There are movies in which you can say: "Hey just lower your expectations, take it easy and enjoy the ride". TFA is definitely NOT one of this movies. JJ Abrams and co took upon themselves this tremendous undertaking, Understanding that less than brilliant movie will not be accepted, and definitely thriving towards that goal. This movie had big shoes to fill from the mostly epic original trilogy , to the soul crushing prequels. This movie was supposed to be the the cure to mend the broken hearts of us lucas ravaged fans. +Austyn Gillis I think Han's performance was bad. Leia's wasn't very good either but she wasn't in it as much so I didn't mind. I'm iffy about Kylo Ren. I thought it was a good concept but I didn't find the performance believable.

I think this movie did exactly what it needed to. To me it was meant to be a bridge from the old guard to the new guard and it delivered. While there was a lot of nostalgia I think that is what people from my generation needed to allow the old star wars characters to rest while introducing us to the new ones. Like they said not a perfect movie but one that has healed the open wound of the prequels but an incredible one just the same. Hats off to J.J. and all the cast.

The force awakens was incredible. And in my opinion the best one ever made. You all just wanna see all the old characters and the old story and can't accept that a new age in rising.

+tony “teezy” Legardy You can find flaws in any movie if you try. But this movie does just rip-off the plot of past movies. That's a big flaw. It has other issues too - many of them, and the importance of them is debatable. But the plot is almost entirely ripped-off and so calling it a great or amazing (as most people seem to be saying) movie just seems flawed in itself.

When Disney bought Star Wars for 4 Billion, they didn't intend to not make any more movies. The Star Wars saga is forever, and if you don't like em don't watch em. Don't ruin it for everyone else. JJ Ab's eye for detail and continuity was really impressive. Not sure if this has been noted elsewhere, but in ROTJ Niem Numb speaks in an Alien tongue, that is actually a Kenyan dialect Kikuyu, when he says, "All of you there, come here." In TFA, he speaks again in Kikuyu language and says, "We will fight them!" or "We will beat them!" Pretty cool I thought. Great fan knowledge, great continuity.

+OneAndOnlyBillyJ I think you're right, it's a bit hypocritical of Dan to be so harsh on Jurassic World for being blatantly nostalgic, and then be "Star Wars is amazing" even though it does pretty much the same thing. It has bigger explosions, more visually captivating action set-pieces, and good characters, all drenched in a hefty dosage of "the originals are awesome!" hanging over them. So I think if Dan hated JW so much simply cause it was retreading the original and living off of nostalgia, then he shouldn't like SW: TFA as much as he seems to do. That said, he's entitled to his opinion, but that level of hypocrisy makes it a bit harder to take his opinion seriously.

Kris Solberg Exactly! I thought for sure Dan was going to be more critical of that "Nostalgia Factor" and bring up the same points he did with his "Jurassic World" bashing, but surprisingly it was Andy that brought up that argument. It was still a good movie, nonetheless, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to sit here and say that the movie was terrible by any stretch of the imagination, same as "Jurassic World," Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems to take all our favorite parts of the original movies and mashes them together into a cohesive movie with some new features. I think that after all the glitz and glamour fades and people watch it several times and start thinking about it critically, they will realize it and come to the same conclusion, or they will be die hard fan boys and keep their rose colored glasses on, no matter what anyone says.

Tom Baker Nah when the prequels came out, everything was praised. No one said anything was wrong about ep1; none of the acting, decisions, effects, or even jar jar. Ep2 got a bit and by ep3 there were people who still drank the coolaid trying to like it while others began to realize it. Ep3 still huge then tho, and it wasnt till years later that people started looking back on them without nostalgia goggles. Now its well accepted that theyre garbage in every aspect but it wasnt always like that.

It was episode 4 + episode 1... the plot was recycled the enemy's are recycled the tech is recycled... Its basically a big nostalgic money grab.. generic and could have been a lot better with some original content!

This review is the best spoiler-free review I've seen that completely summarized my exact emotions. Especially by the end there, the "it wasn't perfect but I didn't need it to be, it was emotionally satisfying." It's been a long time I've walked out of a movie thinking 'huh, there were things I did not like in that movie, but I cannot stop smiling or being excited to see it again and again'.
