I think it's so funny that the most accurate criticism of the Star Wars prequels is done by a psychopath who kidnaps and murders women, kidnaps children from grocery store parking lots, keeps the bones of his victims in his basement, has a poor grasp of world history and frequently mixes up world events, constantly misidentifies famous historical figures and celebrities, has a disturbing passion for pizza rolls, fondly reminisces in a casual manner and very often how he murdered his wife as well as a girl he met while gambling named Bambi, masturbates to Olsen twin movies, expels blood into storm drains, was on the Titanic, actually crashed the Titanic, sold clothes and wigs to former US presidents, spent a decade keeping records on ink purchases, hates guys named Rick, had a son who hanged himself in a grungy bathroom, once tried to use a fleshlight to change a tire, crapped all over a movie theater floor because of his colon, and seems to have a love for Kevin Bacon. You guys, *this* is the description of the person who best understands the Star Wars prequels.

@WreckageBrother-rd5zf 8 ай бұрын
@Istuckmyheaddownthetoilet "To be fair, it took a couple of reels to introduce Luke, too. But Luke was a part of a bigger story, he was not Space Jesus." That's quite irrelevant - yes, Anakin has the "space jesus" thing going on while Luke just the "father's son with destiny ahead of him", and them bumping into him is presented with this "not a coincidence, fateful" angle while Luke was just living next to Obiwan who's the target of the message, and that whole mystery of his buried past and who Obiwan is and what Owen isn't telling him etc. gets gradually unraveled, you can point at differences like this but at the most basic both are cases of "pick up the new unwitting magician scion protagonist while on a war mission" and more or less the same, in broad strokes. "And in that time, other characters of equal importance to the story were being introduced. Vader, Leia, C-3P0, R2-D2, etc etc." Like here Quigon/Obiwan and Padme, yeah.

And what i have realized is that the people who are just getting into Star Wars now, they dont hate the Sequels, prequels or originals. It's made me rethink my view of the prequels. And for the record, Qui-Gon is a stotic man who is angered and annoyed by many things around him, but he chooses to be patient and gentle instead. He defies his superiors at many times, often to their faces. Padme is a child who carries the responsibilities of an adult. She is not afraid to sacrifice her own life if it means the benefit of her people. She is not corruptible, but doesnt assume others share that trait. It's not that hard even if you only use episode 1.

There is this huge revisionist push to try and convince people that the prequels are good. Just because the Disney films sucked, doesn't retroactively make the prequels good.
@harold9552
@harold9552 Жыл бұрын
It’s not a revisionist push. As a prequel kid, this was our Star Wars. There’s a group of us that these films are just as special to as the originals we’re to that generation. I still believe that episode 1 was simply a victim of its own hype and fans were unable to see the full scope of George’s prequel vision, an issue he didn’t have to deal with on the original trilogy. And after that, you can’t be won back over

Points have been raised about how the prequels were maybe meant to draw attention to how corporate interests pushing nations to war was a quiet and dull but very real way freedom and democracy could slip into fascism as a commentary on the Bush era. Which… sure, timely message. Prolly shoulda shoehorned it into movies that weren’t painful to watch though, and preferably weren’t part of a pre-existing franchise?

Dan Arschloch In all honesty, this review of RLM's is certainly not my favorite. I vastly prefer the one for Attack of the Clones. But where exactly is the line drawn between "thoughtless fanboy rant" and "intellectual discourse of cinema"? Is it the fact that he talks about plot holes? Even critics of respected media venues today do that. In my opinion, this one, although it singularly has and debuts many of the staple memes RLM is known for ("It's so dense," "...Worst thing since my son," etc.) they had to find their niche (also a probable lack of budgetary security at the time, I would presume.) Stoklasa's most potent arguments--the lack of memorable characters and the overall absence of any cinematic language (other than that shot of Anakin and Padme's shadows in AoTC; a rare sight to witness such visual expressionism in one of the prequels) stand out most among viewers who appreciate these critiques. So again, I just ask, what would have made this thought out? If Stoklasa had just expressed high praise for the prequels? Stoklasa makes arguments that could have been made by any New York coffee slinging film critic. His WAY of telling what he found issue with may have been a bit more... upfront than others who engage in these sorts of movie discussions may have otherwise been. But other than the particularly vitriolic approach, and the character acting of a rather unsettling narrator in Mr. Plinkett, it seems all the chips have fallen in the right spot for this to be identified as a "thought out" review.

Introducing Anakin at like age 8 was just a WTF decision by Lucas?? Anakin should have been around 19 in Episode 1 and a dark bad ass, that Obi Wan was trying to reform and bring over to the force.

I’d say the same for this unfunny video the voice is just cringe, the jokes are dated maybe a little edgy and funnier back in 2008 or whenever this came out, and none of his arguments really hold up to any scrutiny. Where is the evidence that GL had people telling him no during the OT? Why do I have to take these 4 people from a trailer park serious when describing characters? Not only are the prequels miles better than the sequels I’d say they’re pretty good movies in general with a very interesting political plot that I’d say is relevant for today’s politics, just watch Alex Jones describe them better and in more detail in 2 in a half minutes than this “hilarious” film critic needed however long this playlist is.

Recently there's been a whole bunch of people coming out and suddenly saying the prequels are good. But I come back to this and see the same criticisms still apply to them all these years later. A movie doesn't just become good because of nostalgia. The writing and dialogue is still terrible, the plot has too many holes and Jake Lloyd can't act to save his life. Most people need to see those series before trying to retroactively declare the prequels classics.

some people make the argument that, compared to the new trilogy, the prequels had the advantage of being the brainchild of one guy and therefore, having a coherent vision. While I do agree with that, they certainly didn't use their advantage to any potential. As wasted as TLJ and Rise are, they are more entertaining and well made then the prequels will ever be. @USSMariner 10 жыл бұрын
852kronos As a kid, I always assumed that elements of Vader's suit were repurposed from his Jedi armor. The metal grieves, puffy suit material, and the hard upper collar/shoulder plate very much match Obi-Wan's description of Jedi being the "knights of the Old Republic," which is already implied to be fairly literal given that they use light"sabers". EDIT: Medieval knights often wore long tunics in place of and prior to the advent of chestplates and plate armor. Vader's suit is also quilted, which could easily reflect chailmail. Unintentional? Sure, but most of Vader's background in the original trilogy wasn't nailed down until ANH was mostly finished filming. Lucas only made him Luke's dad when writing Star Wars II (the unfinished sequel concept prior to ESB,) so rationalizing stuff after the fact isn't new to SW. Overly complicated, insane bullshit is, which leads us back to the Prequels.

I hear over and over that the prequel trilogy "are good movies, just not good Star Wars movies." No, no they fucking aren't. They aren't even close to being good movies. They fail in every single aspect of good story telling. The *only* reason people are so forgiving of them and still talk about them is because of their Star Wars label.

yuoke "The prequels are very creative in their new planets, settings" Dreaming up backdrops, settings, and aliens is just about the easiest (and most inconsequential) part of the Star Wars movie making process. A water planet? A desert planet? A lava planet? Not very creative if you ask me. It's like George played Mario 64 and said "yeah, let's go with that." "the base idea for the stories are actually good" I have to strongly disagree with you here. I thought George's base idea for the prequel trilogy was the worst, most unforgivable thing about them. The prequel trilogy still could have worked with the stilted acting, groan-inducing dialog, overuse of CGI etc as long as the base story was good. It wasn't... it was absolutely horrible, and it made the entire trilogy unsalvageable. "Everything was mostly executed really good, but the plot... ...the main character is a mary sue, no creativity" I agree with your points (and was also sorely disappointed with The Force Awakens), but at least the movie itself was competently made and was a decent popcorn flick, which is far more than can be said about the prequels.

***** Sounds design was top notch (with the sole exception of using F1 engine sounds during the race in Episode 1.... that was extremely lazy and disruptive), music was also good, although I thought Williams played it safe when composing the prequel soundtracks. Anakin is still a whinny piece of crap who falls to the Dark Side in a snap. Everyone is blind at how obvious Palpatine is behind everything. Padme is utterly useless and is resorted to a crying damsel who dies from a ''broken heart''. The final Lightsaber fight is way over the top in every way and the only thing that gives it the illusion of depth in any way is John William's amazing score. Nearly 8 years later, I remember the awe I had when I saw this video. A relic, from a time when youtube required your channel to have a certain amount of content before you could upload videos past 15 minutes. So here we have a review in 7 parts, totaling more time than the movie in question. The editing holds up, some jokes are past their prime, but in total sum this review is still more entertaining than the movie itself. I'm glad you guys are still in business, and still practicing your art.

Tbh it's kind of stupid, he compared a character from 3 films with a character from 1 film and a character from all of the films with one who had little focus in the phantom menace. @avogaming7129

LJK401 Might be true, but my point is that it is an unfair test, multiple variables as to why they couldn't describe the characters, I was able to name several traits for Qui Gon (less so for Amidala, she was just shit, at least in the first film). And not really, what do you know about the Emperor in the first one? He's evil and an emperor, both of which break the rules of this test i think.
@avogaming7129
@avogaming7129 8 жыл бұрын
LJK401 It drm, my point still stands, this test has too many variables to be a true test.
@avogaming7129
@avogaming7129 8 жыл бұрын
Ancap2112 Yes there is xD how you can you say with a straight face that there are no possible variables other than one film being better than the other. For example, let say that you have seen episode 1 3 times and any of the original trilogy 50 times. You are of course going to understand the characters from the original trilogy better than the ones in the prequels. While they may not be as memorable they do still have individual character traits, some of which are subtle and you may not seem them the first time you watch the film. From a character development standpoint Qui Gon is well developed (at least from my perspective, you get a feel for who he is as a character, a jedi who is meant to be a call back to the OT Obi Wan Kenobi, a mentor figure. But at the same time he is a character who is very much against the main jedi order, believing that they should serve the force rather than use the force like a tool. He follows it to a religious degree). And having additional movies greatly helps when developing a character, additional movies these people will have seen many times. So while if you did just look at a New Hope they MIGHT be better developed than the prequel cast, there is no possible way of knowing, at least from this test without asking someone who has only seen Episode 4 and Episode 1 and seen them the same number of times.

6:54 I keep thinking about and using the characterization test to this day. Really helped me put into words what I found so bland and frustrating about especially the Phantom Menace. What a great way to just really just measure how well a character is fleshed out, especially if you do it after just one viewing. Like, I love Rogue One but there are definitely some rather significant characters that I feel like a lot of people would fail to say much about (would they even remember their names?) Meanwhile, with Andor I could say a lot about, like, Cinta, and she probably has no more than a handful of lines throughout the entire show. Kinda funny that they both had the same main writer (Gilroy). I guess the importance of having a good director and good staff?

Your point about the name thing is startlingly accurate. I've known a lot of people who would argue that solo/rogue one where good movies, when asked to name one non-legacy character they fail 9 times out of 10 and at best can name one character. I dont think those films are especially bad (at least compared to the depths that I've seen cinema go) but its astounding how badly they failed to establish their characters. I wonder if it wasnt for all the games, comics, books, and toys would people even be able to name the non-legacy prequal characters.

@mackielunkey2205 Жыл бұрын
In all fairness, Tony Gilroy was working with Chris Weitz (who worked on Twilight New Moon and later the 2022 Pinocchio remake) in Rogue One. In Andor, he got to work with his brother Dan who written and directed Nightcrawler (I haven’t watched it yet), and Beau Willimon, who created House of Cards, and the difference of writing quality between the two is pretty damn stark.

Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, and 3 are the greatest movies in the Star Wars universe. They are a legendary and essential work, pivotal in shaping the world of Star Wars, representing the best the franchise has to offer in every aspect. From Episodes I to VI, all the Star Wars movies are masterpieces-iconic, stunning, incredibly rich, exciting, and timeless. These movies remain unmatched, defining the pinnacle of science fiction with the best characters, actors, casting, scenes, universe, and storytelling. The depth, the expansion, and the sheer creativity of this universe are unparalleled, with its planets, environments, creatures, and civilizations revolutionizing cinema with groundbreaking technology, digital effects, and editing advancements. Together, these two epic trilogies form a perfect, magical, and exceptional whole-an inseparable part of a grand, unified story: the tale of Anakin Skywalker, his journey from a Jedi to the dark side, and his ultimate redemption through self-sacrifice to save his son, destroy the Sith, and restore balance to the Force. It’s also the rise and fall of a dictatorship, showing the transformation of a democracy into tyranny, all set in a vast, sprawling universe that is breathtakingly rich and endlessly creative. Star Wars Episodes I through VI tell the same story, set in the same universe-George Lucas’s singular vision of an extraordinary science fiction saga. Both trilogies are integral to the Star Wars world, two sides of the same galaxy. These two monumental trilogies are masterpieces that have greatly contributed to building the universe and lore of Star Wars as we know it today. They are legendary, exciting, and iconic works of science fiction, the crowning achievement of George Lucas. Six incredible films that together form an inseparable whole.

The funny thing is that a lot of people like to say that the Clone Wars redeems the prequels. Nah dude, it straight up REPLACES the prequels. There is legitimately no reason to watch episodes 1 and 2 now that we have the Clone Wars. At most, you’d miss a couple references to certain events from those movies, but even then you can pick up on most of those things as you watch the show (the fact that Anakin grew up as a slave on Tatooine, that his mother died, that he’s the chosen one, that a clone army was created on Kamino, etc). The only prequel you need to actually watch to understand the show is Revenge of the Sith. Most people say the Clone Wars makes the prequels better, but I’d argue that, because the show is so much better written, that it makes those movies look even worse by comparison.

Who else is starting a Star Wars Plinkett marathon while waiting for the Rise of Skywalker review, if there is gonna be one? I’ll say this about the Sequels vs Prequels: The Sequels are better on a technical level, but the Prequels are better on a conceptual level. Like, the Prequels clearly had an end goal that they were working towards even if the execution was poor. I’m sure the Plinkett review of TROS will put this all in perspective.

I like to come to the Plinkett reviews as a palette cleanser after I see too many kids try to defend the prequels by saying “well they’re better than the sequels” 3 things 1. Having to say “well at least they’re not as bad as those other movies” does not make something a good movie 2. The “depth” the prequels supposedly have are of little accomplishment of the films themselves, but rather the expanded universe via the Clone Wars, comic books and other media 3. You’ll understand my frustration when 10 years down the line, you start seeing kids who grew up try to defend the sequel trilogy that you despise so much as “under appreciated masterpieces” too

People literally camped out in lines for weeks to watch a cartoon rabbit step in the poopie. I literally cannot wait for point number 3, I'm going to be a bitter old man.

When I was younger, watching the OT, I imagined how and why Vader became the way he is. I imagined Anakin was a lot like Luke. Eager, a bit naive, but basically a good person. He's living in the Old Republic. But I didn't think there'd be so many Jedi. Maybe a thousand. I pictured the old Jedi as like astronauts are today. They must prove themselves, endure arduous training, but they need to develop a great deal of personal discipline. At the same time, they are spiritual. Not everyone knows or believes that Jedi exist ("hokey religions and ancient beliefs", or whatever Han calls them in ANH, suggesting that, a generation after the Jedi were gone, they'd been forgotten.) Lightsaber battles in the OT were sparse. For a reason. They are the culmination of conflict. Jedi build their own lightsabers as part of their training. Anakin would have been buddies with Kenobi. He's being taught about the Force, but they're also friends. They're not much different in age. I imagined Kenobi was maybe 5 or 10 years older at the most. Ben Kenobi would have been training too, practising his skills and so on. Anakin and Kenobi would have done intense training missions together. The Old Republic would not have had these Jedi churning factories, or even many schools for Jedi at all. The Jedi were the elite guardians of the Old Republic, but that doesn't mean you need armies of them fighting in huge lightsaber battles. They have powers that go beyond weapons. They would be used when necessary. They're both spiritual and physical protectors. But mainly, because becoming and being a Jedi requires constant training, they would have been quite isolated, spending most of their time, like Buddhist monks meditating, contemplating, thinking: the force is the power that binds all things, so Jedi aren't just warriors, they must be thinkers too. They'd have had thousands of years of philosophy. Why NOT use the dark side ? What makes it the dark side ? Can a Jedi use both the light side and the dark side ? I think Anakin would have been the curious type. He'd have proved himself in training and in battle, being one of the best starfighters in the galaxy. But he would be a thinker. His curiosity and naivety would lead him to the dark side. He'd realise that the dark side is seductive - addictive, in a way. It feels good to have this power, and he'd experiment with it, to the consternation of Kenobi and the other Jedi. He'd eventually meet Palpatine, who would secretly be training in the dark side of the force. Palpatine would show him how much cooler the dark side is, how you can become absorbed in it, and you don't need to be disciplined or control your feelings. He'd explain to Anakin, that the dark side is natural, but the more powerful side of the force. Anakin wouldn't realise that the dark side is quicker to harness, but ultimately destructive. He would see all the cool stuff Palpatine can do with the dark side, and he'd go to Kenobi and say, "Palpatine can do stuff that you can't do. We should be more into the dark side stuff." Kenobi would explain to him the things Yoda explains to Luke. Maybe Yoda himself would be there. The Jedi leaders would first try to stop Palpatine by chastising him, but this would make Palpatine angry. A wicked man, Palpatine would conceal his dark side impulses, except to Anakin. Anakin would be torn between Palpatine and Kenobi, but ultimately, like a drug, the dark side would consume him. He would come to believe it is more powerful and useful, and he would be seduced by it, unable to abandon it, and unwilling too. If he did meet Padame or whoever Luke and Leia's mother is, it would not be a love story, but a story of how Anakin's lust for the dark side turns her away. Maybe Anakin even kills Padame himself, after the kids are born. Perhaps he knows them just as infants. But anyway, Palpatine would be plotting to overthrow the Republic, to take power. To do so, he needs to kill the Jedi. So, he trains Anakin in secret. At the same time, Palpatine recruits others who are dissatisfied with the Republic. He slowly builds armies, who start as paramilitaries on various star systems, and trains in secret for the moment when he takes power, for at that moment, they will overthrow the Republic. Using the Dark Side of the Force and his own personal charisma and magnetism, these armies on other planets become personally loyal to Palpatine. But, to remove the Republic, the Jedi must be killed. Anakin trains and trains, becomes darker and darker. As Palpatine stirs up rebellions and unrest among the star systems, conflicts break out. The Republic is at risk of falling. Palpatine tricks the Jedi council into sending the Jedi to certain places, he scatters them throughout the galaxy. Say, a group of 3 or 4 Jedi go to the Hutt planet, and because Palpatine has made a deal with the leaders there, they meet the Jedi with open arms and pretend to be friendly - all the while they're planning to assassinate the Jedi. Palpatine sends Anakin out to the Hutt planet, where the Jedi, glad to see him. Alongside the Hutt leaders, he kills the Jedi. He does the same thing throughout a number of star systems. Meanwhile Palpatine and his growing minions stir up unrest on Coruscant. Protests become riots, groups of gangs become paramilitaries. The Republic is crumbling. The remaining Jedi, those not sent out to the other parts of the galaxy, are recalled. Anakin returns, and the Jedi on Coruscant don't know he's bad, because he's been killing Jedi in the other systems. Paramilitaries are sent to the ancient Jedi monasteries and burn them down, destroying all the evidence of the light side of the force. Anakin and Palpatine send a message to the star systems: rise up and throw off the yolk of the Republic. Live in freedom, live as your own masters. Live in a new regime that respects power. The more you do for us, the bigger your place at the table when we're running things. Now, the galaxy is in a civil war. The Republic forces are scattered, and annihilated, throughout a bunch of battles. Anakin, Palpatine and their forces destroy the remaining Jedi, and disband the Jedi council. Yoda escapes. Ben Kenobi and Anakin have their last fight like in ROTS, but it's not in some lava place, or whatever, and it's a personal fight, tense and slow, like in ANH. Anakin wins, but is hurt, Kenobi gets away. Palpatine wins the war and those who helped him all join together, and he implements the Empire, giving admiralties and leadership positions to certain people, allowing other star systems to live in criminality, others still he betrays, knowing that the armies he has amassed, the loyalties he's developed, means he has the nucleus of a war machine able to kill anyone who poses a threat. But in a way, it's better for the galaxy to be fragmented. Palpatine knows with his armies, he can reign the star systems later, as he develops the Empire, from a band of disparate militaries into a unified force. Now, the Vader suit thing, which Vader wears, that's not just given to him in one piece like he had it the whole time. As Anakin becomes so dark and powerful so quickly, his body is corrupted, like Palpatines is. And perhaps he wears the mask too, as symbolic, and pragmatically too. The idea tbst his suit is some type of life support system is ludicrous, because if it was, then the rebels would have planned to destroy parts of the suit, later on. It could be something he uses as armour, it could be a military outfit, it could be symbolic and it could have the capacity to heal him as well, all of those at the same time. But he would develop it slowly. It would be personal to him and the darker he becomes, the more of the suit he wears, the more he adds to it. It is like when modern military generals go onto battlefields - they wear helmets and body armour and so on. In any case, that's the story of the prequels, that I had in my head, before the actual prequels came out. Some of the stuff in the prequels matches what I had thought of, but all in all, they're quite pathetic.

I haven't watched the new sequel movies as I had already imagined what they should be, when the OT came out. (The sequels should be: the Empire isn't destroyed, only weakened. They lost the Emperor and the Death Star, a few Star Destroyers and other ships, but they didn't lose their industrial or economic capacity. They're still a force to be reckoned with. Someone else steps up to take the helm. They're battered but not defeated. The rebels call themselves the New Republic, but must prove they've got the military strength to actually defeat the Empire, not just it's leader and one of its weapons. An Admiral or General becomes the leader of the Empire, and the sequels would be about the final, and even more grand scale, confrontation between the Rebels/New Republic, and the Empire. It's not like ROTJ just switched the Empire into non existence. It dealt them a blow, but not a death blow. I like it to Normandy, or perhaps the North African campaign of WW2. The beginning of the end. The force would play a part in the sequels, but because there are no dark side practitioners alive, it would be something like, that, internecine conflict within the New Republic, and Luke's training being quite quick, would mean he had not developed the discipline to resist the temptation of tbe dark side. He swore, earlier, to avoid the dark side, but, that was because he wanted to pull his father away from it. Now, perhaps during the intensity of the wars following the Death Star's destruction, Luke continues training but falls into the trap Anakin did, which is, curiousity of the dark side. Perhaps Luke wants to remake the Jedi, but as all the philosophy is gone, all the methods of resisting the dark side, he has no way to know how to stop it's temptations, except by contemplating it, feeling it, himself. The question would be, does Luke turn to the dark side after all, lacking the discipline and training to resist it, at its most pure level ? He must contemplate it, and perhaps even use it, in order to know how to stop others from using it. He must rewrite the works and knowledge of old, but, as he delves into the force, he becomes enamoured of the dark side. He sees what his father did. He finally sees the power of the dark side. So that would be the central Jedi theme of the sequels, perhaps, less external and more internal conflict, although maybe Leia starts Jedi training too and Luke kills Leia in a dark side induced fit of anger, then regrets it - there's heaps of cool stuff like that which they could have done. I imagined much of this, when I was younger, and I was incredibly excited for the prequels and the sequels. I remember how happy I was when I found out there'd be 9 Star Wars films. And how disappointed I was when I saw, at about 14 or 15, the Phantom Menace. I didn't watch the other two prequels until much later. I suspect Lucas isn't the talent we thought he was. I think the technical, financial and temporal limitations which he had, were good things. They reigned him in. And at that time he was actually passionate. He cared about the one movie which he wrote, bevause it wasn't a "franchise" then, just a movie. By the early 2000s, he just didn't care enough, and, without anyone to tell him "no", or anyone courageous enough to say "this sucks", he wrote garbage. I think my ideas as a 12 year old, are still much better than what George Lucas produced. I think the stories I conceived of as a kid are better than the prequels and better than the sequels, and in fact, I think 99 of 100 young fans of the OT, would produce better stories for the prequels and sequels than Lucas, and anyone at Disney. These films were pathetically lame, and Plinkett explains exactly why.

I always imagined the Jedi were like spies; you don’t know who they are or what they do specifically, and you wouldn’t know one when you see one. Only those in the military frontlines have seen them in action, thus most people don’t believe they exist. That’s why the rebels on Yavin IV say “May the Force be with you.” Because some of them have worked alongside Jedi, and have seen the Force firsthand.

@@jimreily7538Really good version and all in all one that can be said to be much more authentic than the 1-3 movies that were made; however there's a few parts that, while good on their own, don't match the established continuity (just like I-III also contradict the original continuity & past-recounting dialogue a lot): "Anakin and Palpatine send a message to the star systems: rise up and throw off the yolk of the Republic. Live in freedom, live as your own masters. Live in a new regime that respects power. The more you do for us, the bigger your place at the table when we're running things. Now, the galaxy is in a civil war. The Republic forces are scattered, and annihilated, throughout a bunch of battles." "Palpatine wins the war and those who helped him all join together, and he implements the Empire, giving admiralties and leadership positions to certain people, allowing other star systems to live in criminality, others still he betrays, knowing that the armies he has amassed, the loyalties he's developed, means he has the nucleus of a war machine able to kill anyone who poses a threat. But in a way, it's better for the galaxy to be fragmented. Palpatine knows with his armies, he can reign the star systems later, as he develops the Empire, from a band of disparate militaries into a unified force." This would seem to contradict the following: "The Rebellion will continue to gain support in the Imperial Senate-" "The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us; I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the old Republic have been swept away." "That's impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?" "The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line - fear of this battle station." Looks like the old Republic structures had been intact this whole time, and the idea of really fully banking on fear and military force is only being implemented now. "Princess Leia, before your execution, I would like you to be my guest at a ceremony that will make this battle station operational; no star system will dare oppose the Emperor now." However exposition of this kind (about the current state of the galaxy, as well as anything that paints a picture of how the Empire rose to begin with) is only present in this 1st movie, so your outline probably wouldn't contradict anything in ep5-6; those 2 movies also make it look a lot more like the Empire just oppresses everyone with their military (with no need for Deathstars even), and may very well have just grabbed power by pure conquest. The uprising expected by those quoted ep4 lines doesn't seem to happen there either - so it's possible ep5 simply decided to erase that whole aspect from continuity. "Ben Kenobi and Anakin have their last fight like in ROTS, but it's not in some lava place, or whatever, and it's a personal fight, tense and slow, like in ANH. Anakin wins, but is hurt, Kenobi gets away." The lines "when I left you I was but a learner - now I am the master" and "your powers are weak, old man" suggest that Obiwan was stronger when they parted ways, and *now* the turns have tabled; whether those lines imply a previous duel is also open to interpretation. "The idea tbst his suit is some type of life support system is ludicrous, because if it was, then the rebels would have planned to destroy parts of the suit, later on. It could be something he uses as armour, it could be a military outfit, it could be symbolic and it could have the capacity to heal him as well, all of those at the same time. But he would develop it slowly." Don't think that line of reasoning really makes sense, since being a life support machine doesn't necessarily make the suit extra vulnerable to weapons, or preclude it from functioning as armor a well - as you proceed to point out in this 2nd paragraph. (And judging by that "lightsaber hit on the shoulder", it's possible that it indeed does. And there's nothing in ep3 to disprove or contradict that notion either.) And any rebels with the opportunity to "destroy the suit" would already be in his presence and technically have the opportunity to attack and kill him altogether. Also ep6's "take off this mask" "but then you'll die" already establishes it as a life support thing, after the ESB scene had kind of implied it previously. However other than that, the idea of him building the suit gradually, it being an extension of general Imperial uniform design and this being connected to him becoming corrupted by evil etc. yeah, that all fits. "although maybe Leia starts Jedi training too and Luke kills Leia in a dark side induced fit of anger, then regrets it - there's heaps of cool stuff like that which they could have done." Something like that happens somewhere in the old EU, or at least in SfDebris' Trek crossover fic "Unity" (that takes many elements from said EU), where Luke does go to the dark side, and shows up at Leia's house to abduct her child or something - and then kills Chewie for trying to stop him.

It never ceases to amaze me how much all my friends keep telling myself that the prequels are better than the originals. I am 20, and I grew up with the prequels. hell, as a kid, i liked them more than the originals, but as I got older and older, the originals, eSPECIALY EMPIRE, got better and better, and I began to understand the dislike that many older people I knew held towards the prequels. Today, I cannot, in all legitimate honesty, believe how anyone with a mature mind are convinced that The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are legitimately better movies than A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. All I keep hearing is that there is better action and special effects, as well as a "more complex" story line. Honestly, I find the prequel fanboys more annoying than the OT fanboys, because all they keep saying is "HURR DURR YOU'RE BLINDED BY NOSTALGIA1!!1!1!!" And almost everyone whom i've shown this to immediately turn it down and calls it shit because "He's an asshole and stupid and bla bla" without actually giving solid counter arguments. I am usually not this gfrustrated about an opinion on a movie, but it gets on my nerves when people are trying so desperately to say that the originals are worse. The directing, the cinematography, the pacing, the characters, the dialogue and the themes are all represented and executed significantly better in the originals. But oh my god, The Force Awakens was a GOOD ass movie!!!

Try and watch TPM and ESB back to back and tell me how The Phantom Menace is by any means a better movie. I did not say that I hate people who prefer the prequels, just that it irritates me when people never seem to have any solid arguments for their claims.
