+Reti4 Great video, man! You're very narrative style is fun to listen to, and your style of analysis and different formating from your fellow council members is refreshing. I'd love to see how you break down Kenobi or Dooku. Keep up the good work. PS if you don't mind me making a suggestion, I think a battle between Cade Skywalker and Obi-Wan would be really interesting. I'm a Forcecast fan boy and have commented on many of your vids, and have seen replies and I've left this suggestion on almost everybody's videos at least once a VS season. So I guess I'll do it again. Great job again

+Reti4 great video. I do agree that the way Ahsoka uses the reverse grip is detrimental to her style. What do you think though when only a secondary blade is wielded in such a manner?
@infinitesheldon5710
@infinitesheldon5710 8 жыл бұрын
+Matthias McCormack When she uses her shoto in the reverse grip, and her standard lightsaber in the regular grip, it's a far more feasible tactic. Historical martial arts documents in real life depict duelists who used the "ice pick grip" with a dagger in the off-hand while wielding a sword (usually a rapier) in the primary hand. The dagger would be used to deflect incoming attacks in a way somewhat similar to how one would use a buckler, while the rapier would then be used to riposte. However, it was also equally common to see that off-hand dagger in the standard grip. Also, as Reti4 mentioned in the video, in extreme close quarters combat, that secondary short weapon can be ridiculously lethal, thanks to how much easier it is to manipulate in such close quarters when the blades are locked.

I’ve been rewatching some of Ahsoka’s latter series fights, and I’ve noticed she has a strong tendency to switch to standard grip whenever fighting someone with more experience or skill than her, I still agree that she would likely lose against Swan but it’s something to note.

You're wrong about a few of your points regarding the reverse grip - and I preface this with over a decade of experience in Arnis 1) holding a weapon in reverse grip makes it easier for the weapon to be brought into position to block for the off hand (you'll notice her offhand is in the reverse grip far more often than her mainhand) 2) holding a weapon in reverse grip reinforces the block due to the acute angle of the blade along the forearm (you can't sacrifice leverage to ease your block, it opens you up to other attacks of your blade lock) 3) holding a weapon in reverse grip doesn't cause you to telegraph your attacks or cost you precision so much as it emphasizes the cut over the stab (you gain more angles of attack) 4) holding the weapon in reverse grip increases the speed at which you can continue to attack and/or stab off of the cut 5) holding the weapon in reverse grip gives the wielder the advantage as the range between you and the opponent shortens. The main disadvantage of the reverse grip is your shortening the reach and range of your attacks, tighter cuts and a parabolic stab, where the main advantage is you gain speed, strength and are more difficult to disarm compared to the orthodox grip. It's the preferred grip of CQB for Special Forces around the world for a reason, and while I realize swords aren't knives I don't think Lightsabers are swords either concerning their gyroscopic effect and weight balance. It's difficult to know which techniques apply the best to the Lightsaber (I have a long standing suspicion tho' that Lightsabers would be best used immitating baton fighting styles due to the nature of an omnidirectional cutting weapon tho'). I think Ahsoka's choice of dual wielding and reverse grip make a lot of sense with her preference for Ataru, dual weapons, a Shoto and reverse grip maximizes speed, reverse grip regains some strength for blows and blocks, reverse grip prevents the blades from interfereing with each other (and the body in flight) so it's a pretty complimenting package. Also I think it's important that Ahsoko, Ataru and reverse grip are all "in fighters," Ahsoko prefers hand to hand combat, Ataru integrates hand to hand combat into Lightsaber combat and the reverse grip gives the wielder the advantage in cutting up close and frees the hand for a lateral punch. I can understand why Ahsoko's style is so off putting to someone who doesn't understand how a lot of unorthodox choices manage to cover each other's weaknesses quite well while emphasizing speed and close(r) range tactics compared to a more orthodox fighting style, but if you take some CQB training or watch a few videos on youtube the reverse grip is pretty sound if not everyone's cup of tea. It requires a lot more foot work and feinting in real life, which ironically sounds a lot like Ataru in the SWU.

I have just watched a couple of interesting videos about the reverse grip (one Star Wars/lightsaber related and the other about traditional swords held in the ice pick grip). In my opinion, I see the reverse grip as being more useful in conjunction with Form IV, where speed is favoured over strength. By snapping the wrist sharply forward, you attack with speed rather than overpowering strength ("Form V is known for its power"). Also, by holding the blade in the ice pick grip, the blade can (in theory) provide a type of shield while performing the various acrobatics of Form IV. The only circumstance I can see this grip being useful with Form V would be when used in conjunction with Jar'Kai, with a shoto being held in the reverse grip to act as a parrying dagger or buckler, purely for defence while the longer blade is used for counter attacks

Congrats on finally finishing this, and stop being so damn hard on yourself. This was stunning from a visual standpoint and I love the level of analysis. You're the first person I've seen who's actually come up with a viable explanation for why the reverse grip is impractical for sword/lightsaber fencing, rather than simply dismissing it as "Rule of Cool." Plus you've drawn my attention to yet another interesting character I'd had previously little familiarity with. Kudos, good sir.

This was a masterpiece of Vs. videos. To say that I'd had no prior interactions with Bultar's character, I'm now really interested in her. Please can you suggest some sources she's in? Plus, I've always had a relatively low opinion of Ahsoka (as a character and as a combatant). However, your reasoning of her respective skills is to be respected by anyone and everyone. Overall, this was a greatly executed match-up that included solid feats and cold, hard facts; Bultar Swan vs Ahsoka certainly deserves to be among the greatest Star Wars videos ever made, well done.

+Ki-Adi Sandwich That is very high praise indeed, thank you. I'm not sure I agree with your assessment but I appreciate the encouragement all the same. People knowing more about Swan and having an interest in learning even more is the best result I can hope for. She deserves so much more popularity than she has. Ahsoka's incredibly talent and potential had to be highlighted, as many dismiss her far too quickly, but at the same time her flaws are just as important to cover. Especially considering the level she could reach if they're ever addressed.

+Reti4 I don't mind Ahsoka, but having her placed as the apprentice to Anakin ruins her in my opinion. Despite being in several scenes in TCW, I still feel like I don't really know her for who she is; we've only seen her in fighting scenario. We've seen her react to others, but never to herself. The funny thing is that we were going to have an arc dedicated to her in season 6, but the show was cancelled before her character came into fruition. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Wow, awesome vid. Ahsoka being one of my favourite characters, i was particularly excited to see her for this match up. And enjoyed your breakdown of sword techniques immensely and hope you continue to do so in the future. Pehaps too little information when comparing them to Kenobis. I havent read much on Bultar Swan, but I wasnt able to buy the statement that she was equal based on your analysis. I also thought the artwork was very lovely, and the vid was more or less perfect in length (not too long or too short). Also, it was kinda different to hear someone British doing the analysis breakdown, being from the UK, this was actually quite nice. Nothing against other accents, but it was nice to hear words being pronounced what I would consider correctly
@Reti4
@Reti4 8 жыл бұрын
+Avatar Mufasa Thank you, I appreciate the support. As you could probably tell from the video, Ahsoka and Bultar are two of my favourite characters in Star Wars. I understand people finding the Kenobi comparison difficult to swallow on face value, it is ENTIRELY speculative, but I feel confident in the speculation thanks to all the specific details we DO know about her. I mean, compare her background to Obi-wan's and then try and explain how her being nowhere near his level makes more sense than them being similarly skilled, if Bultar was a main character, her little details would be explored more, and I can't see any other route being more likely than what I went over in the video. I'm glad the length was just right, I was worried my technical analysis was dragging on a bit too much, and that the more narrative verdict would come across as cumbersome or, even worse, pretentious. I apologise for the narration quality, I am aware of ALL the imperfections, I was just incapable of correcting them with the limited time and setup available to me. I'm glad my British pronunciation could be appreciated at least.

I agree about the reverse grip, but I think the reason so many people use it is that it is comfortable. I have also found that it is useful when learning to put your whole body into an attack.
@Reti4
@Reti4 8 жыл бұрын
+William Capps Nice to know I'm not the only one with a negative opinion on it. I've yet to meet anyone that finds it comfortable once they've used it in actual combat. In my experience they tend to look sheepish and switch to the standard grip once you show them how easy it is to defeat someone trying it. I'll concede the point that it does lend itself better to the mentality of using your full body in the fight, as you can't keep the blade in front of you and fight at the same time with the reverse grip, forcing you to commit more physical strikes. The problem is that that is one of the worst things you can do in a duel.

Two years later, and this match up is still great. Now that Rebels (ughhh) has finished, we can see that Ahsoka in her adulthood has shifted more into Niman, while still keeping the reverse grip and the acrobatics and kicks of Ataru. So, what was once an afterthought form to supplement Jar'Kai, now has become the main fighting style, with the former prominent two working to support it. And hell, she was able to hold off Vader.......even if she survived via plot armor.

+Darth Maze We should wait until we get more showings. The two Inquisitors aren't that impressive. The 5th Brother looks like a complete brute while the 7th Sister actually put up a fight. Dave Filoni I think stated Ahsoka isn't in her prime during Rebels. This would make sense as the one fight we've seen her in so far is probably the first time she's dueled in years.

The Joker 10259 Out of curiosity, are you the Joker from KMC? I was implying that I've heard people say it. I don't know if its true, but there also has to be an explanation on why Ahsoka's improved if she has.
@TheJoker10259
@TheJoker10259 8 жыл бұрын
TheNuisanceBird Yes. I haven't heard Dave say that, and I find it extremely unlikely he did, because like I said, if Rebels was not Ahsoka's prime, that means she either regressed or stagnated as a combatant. Factoring in what we know about her, she has 1. grown more spiritual in nature (as stated by Henry Gilroy, co-executive producer of the show) which means she likely has a better understanding of the Force and is more powerful - 2. She is "very much a great warrior during this time" (as stated by Dave Filoni) and 3. is "extremely skilled and probably had the opportunity to hone her abilities (stated by Gilroy again, but I'm paraphrasing). Take all of that into account, and I think it's clear she improved. And to be honest, I really doubt TCW Ahsoka could wreck the Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother like that, and she sure as hell wouldn't be able to challenge Darth Vader in his prime. Now you say there has to be an explanation why/how she's improved over the years... Well, we just don't know what she has been through. We know that she is a fast learner and is very strong in the Force. We know she's fought and survived some of the most dangerous foes of the Clone Wars (Ventress, Grievous, Vizsla, Barriss). We know that she didn't really need more Jedi training from Anakin, as the Council was prepared to promote her to Jedi Knight if she rejoined the Order. All of that being said, and given her combat-focused personality, it is only *logical* that she would pursue to advance her skillset and study the Force more in-depth. Doing so would increase her abilities a great deal I think, even if she didn't face any lightsaber wielders during those 16 years. Fact is, those that are very strong in the Force can increase their skill with the blade and strength in the Force through intense practice.
@TheNuisanceBird
@TheNuisanceBird 8 жыл бұрын
The Joker 10259 I see. I would argue though that taking out the 5th Brother isn't really that impressive. The 7th Sister put up a good fight that and although it's possible Ahsoka could've improved, I don't see her being "high master level". Ventress isn't high master level although she can contend with the best and give them a good fight. I'd say she's probably mid-Knight level until we get more feats for her.

+Brenn Tantor Mara > Meetra. Outside of her capacity as a wound in the Force, Meetra is not exceptional and is decidedly inferior to Revan--who I think Mara would give a pretty hard time based on her showings against Lumiya and Jacen Solo. Vitiate > Nihilus. Greater breadth of Force powers, ridiculous grasp of telepathy, roughly similar or greater magnitude in all other fields save for Force drain. Both are negligible as lightsaber duelists, though I'd give Nihilus the nod there. If Vitiate can resist Nihilus' drain though he's got nothing that can decisively beat him, whereas Vitiate could possibly mindfuck him to death. Ventress > Fisto. If memory serves Fisto was on the losing end of their single EU canon duel. Asajj's skillset was definitely more optimized for lightsaber dueling and while superior in the Force Kit's range of abilities is more specialized towards aquatic combat. Nihl > Fulcrum Ashoka. Like, not even *close*. Nihl could contend with Cade Skywalker at points, who I would put on par with the likes of Galen Marek/Starkiller or Revan for raw power and comparable in skill. Based on what we've seen so far, Tano circa Rebels hasn't advanced much as a duelist compared to her Clone Wars self and her Force powers are ill-defined. The rest sound like they might be interesting, though. My familiarity with Old Republic Sith/Jedi is relatively low outside of the heaviest hitters.

+wristofkings Thanks for your imput. So, I guess I came up with nice ideas. What you wote about Vitiate vs Nihilus is probably right, but that is why it should be explored further. Meetra on wookieepedia is quite similar to Mara, albeit less lengthly. And I wanted a nice female matchup. How would being a wound affect his force combative abilities? Nihl vs Asoka might be too early, we might need to wait for some more Rebels episodes. You might be right about Ventress/Fisto.

I feel the need to point out. A reverse grip is no good for useless if you are using a sword. It originated a knife style. 1. At that close range you aren't going to be doing a lot of slashing, more stabbing, it takes less time and energy and gives far better results. You aren't going to be using it for blocking. And the biggest one is the only real strength a backhand grip has, a very strong downward stab. It's more powerful than a forehand stab, and also the area you are targeting (the neck, and inside collar) are pretty much certain kills, vs a stab to the stomach are far less likely to kill. Note, if you were using a lightsaber, that wouldn't matter, but if you were using a knife you would not want to hit the rib cage because your attacks are far more likely to hit the rib cage than they are to get in between the ribs, and although that would hurt like he__ and leave a nasty cut, it would not be fatal.
@Reti4
@Reti4 8 жыл бұрын
+ArodWingfoot Yeah, I was an idiot for not specifically pointing it out in the video, but my criticisms of the reverse grip do NOT extend to the shorter weapons out there. Reverse gripping a knife is perfectly viable.

Lol, I saw this in my video feed when I got home today, and was so surprised! Loved the Naruto bits in there, and thought it was a very interesting analysis. I don't know much of Bultar Swan, but she seems pretty interesting. As for Ashoka, I thought your analysis of her is pretty accurate. I feel like Ashoka's capabilities aren't exactly the type to be remembered in the holo-textbooks decades later, like Obi-wan, Plo-koon, Kit Fisto, etc, but would definately be just below that tier, similar to Ventress. She can't hope to win out against the best, but can hold her own against them.

+NickDonalds I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You're the first person to comment on the Naruto parts actually. I was worried the use of Neji sparring with Naruto would bring people out of the video a bit, acting more as a distraction than anything else, but I couldn't think of a better way to represent the Sliding-Hands-Kasi style. The music worked well though I think.

Nice job! Though I have a couple things to note. No matter how long it takes do not be too hard on yourself because of it. Being too humble and "self-responsible" can be very self-destructive and cause depression. Trust me I would know. If this happens again, try to move on different projects and come back to it every now and then. Whether, you find this helpful or not it does not matter to me since I am just trying to be a cool guy to others. Also, I find it funny that earlier in the comment I made it sound like a lesson from Tyvokka to Plo Koon. lol. Anyway, see you at the next video!

on topic about the star wars versus series can you do a Anakin Skywalker (During the end of the Clone Wars and before he became Darth Vader) Vs Mace Windu please?
@Reti4
@Reti4 8 жыл бұрын
TheSkyKing18 That's a popular match up. I'm afraid I don't have any interest in doing that one myself, not for a long while at any rate. But I can give you my basic view on it. Anakin at his best is on par with Windu when it comes to sabre skill, if a lot more specialised. The problem is not only does he fall short in regards to the Force (execution, not baseline power with it) and unarmed skill, but he's also very rarely operating at his best. Unlike most people Anakin might face, Mace isn't someone that is going to be trying to out think him, so Anakin's tactical deficiencies don't hurt him too much here. But his emotional instability DEFINITELY does. For Anakin to operate at his best he has to draw on the dark side, and the second he does that he seals his defeat against Mace, who is able to match Anakin without a Vaapad boost let alone with it. They'd start off with Mace having the edge, Anakin would quickly get his bearings on the level he needs to bring to the fight and start ramping up the effort on his end. When this then proves insufficient, after a hefty exchange and no real progress being made, he'll start drawing on the darkside. Mace starts drawing on that power through Vaapad and bam. No matter how much Anakin pushes himself he can no longer feasibly win. I'm aware there's more to it than that but I don't have a great deal of time to go into it at the moment, so take those initial, simple musings with a grain of salt. But I hope my basic assessment is alright for you.
@theskyking1858

Holy Force that's an awesome explanation and outcome and in truth to be honest I wanted to know is because Anakin got a cheap shot against Windu when he cut off Mace's arm and I want to know how he fares against him man to man, thanks again. Whoo! Reti's back! To be clear, I had given this up for vaporware, so when I saw it uploaded and finished I was ecstatic. I love your videos, I love your dryer, I would say more balanced perspective on a lot of these characters, I love that a lot of the characters featured are some of the premier badasses of the SW EU who never get enough exposure and I love the precise breakdown of fights at the end of your videos (I know Antoine does something very similar, but I prefer your approach). As for this video in particular? I can't speak for anyone besides myself, but I would say it's one of the best of recent memory. This is partially because I didn't know much about Bultar Swan beforehand and you made her seem really interesting, but I think that the bit you did at the end was really cool, pointing out how great a match they would've been (though I will probably be having nightmares about a Bultar-trained Ahsoka now. Thanks for that, by the way), though I personally don't think they would've meshed very quickly outside of a conflict like the Clone Wars, given how Ahsoka acted initially. Transferring Ahsoka to Swan around/after her last appearance would have probably gone really well, though. A great matchup, a great analysis and some fantastic ideas at the end. Fantastic video.

I have always had an interest in this character as ,though she did not have a lot of screen time, her capabilities and the characteristics we have seen are very admirable! It has been quite the wait after having looked through your number of videos. I was quite intrigued on your selection of both characters, and I applaud you in providing Bultar Swan some "much needed publicity." She is certainly a side character that not your average SW fan would know unless they read certain comic storylines or picked up certain books. Your own analysis is as detailed as many of the other vs videos that your fellow Council members have made, and you provide a bonus in making a well-thought and well-followed narrative on how the battle would play out. Your calm, collected voice, choice of words, and pacing makes this easy to grasp on your points and entertaining with the use of sarcasm and quips.

+tfl1997 The script for the video was written well before her appearance on Rebels.

I bet it would be really interesting if Bultar had been assigned to be Ahsoka's master.

You are quite informed with the workings of the reverse grip

Excellent video! Although I had my doubts as to if the video would ever be made. It was very good and I consider it to be worth the wait.

If this were Ahsoka from the _Rebels_ show, it would probably have been a different matter. Nice analysis on the Shien reverse grip. While it remains valid on _TCW_ Ahsoka's case, I think taller practitioners such as her elder self, Galen Marek, and his clones would've more than made up for it. I don't blame you for going with what material you have on Bultar Swan. Other sources are hard to come by. For her capabilities, I'd look up _Power of the Jedi Sourcebook_, pp. 124-5. Plus, there's _Star Wars Adventures_ novelettes that feature her missions with Obi-Wan and Anakin: _Hunt the Sun Runner_, _The Cavern of Screaming Skulls_, and _The Hostage Princess_. I plan on reading them soon. Meanwhile, can't wait for your next videos.

+DarthWill3 I would disagree completely, the biggest weakness in my eyes with the reverse grip is three fold. 1 It limits your options in combat, 2 It lacks power in both offense and defense. 3 It also exposes you to openings that wouldn't be there otherwise. Now let me explain, using the reverse grip the movements for any cut (there are roughly 8 different angles of attack one can follow) any and all of those are slower and require far more movement of the body then if you were using it with a standard grip, making them far less viable, because speed kills, the less time it takes me from go to point A to point B the better chance I have of hitting my target. 2 It lacks in power in both offense and defense, doing any of the 8 cuts while holding the saber in the reverse grip is far weaker and more awkward for it's attacks, and as for the defense while in Europe it was done with a single edged dagger where you braced the blade against your forearm you cannot do that with a lightsaber, as it would cut into your own arm. Now the final one is when you are making those attacks with the reverse grip you have to make wide sweeping cuts that reveal your elbow, your sides everything when you are attacking that angle meaning you opponent can quite easily side step and then lop off your arm.
