As a big fan of the books, and classic space opera , to me John Carter is one of the best space operas ever made, if not even my favorite ever on the big screen. It was attacked in the Us and I never got why. Everything that it contains is in the books written 100 years ago and so if you saw those elements elsewhere , it were the Hollywood movies that turned them into a cliche , not JOHN CARTER which as a movie did a brilliant job capturing Burroughs mars from the books. It got everything right , even in the way it mixed elements from books 2 and 3 for a movie part one based on the first novel. The cast was spot on and visually it’s a masterpiece when it comes to capture the atmosphere and settings described in the books. What modern audiences don’t have is references from the classic sci-fi works and in the same way people think it was George Lucas who invented light sabers when in fact it was E.E.DOC.SMITH back in the 1930s when he created modern space opera right after Burroughs did it more classic in Carter. So in short I love this movie. Just rewatched it yesterday on my bluray copy. And I don’t think John Carter was the most pre ordered bluray on uk Amazon ever , as people here in Europe praised it exactly for the good book adaptation it did and for retaining the classic stuff that in America no audiences noticed it was there.
