Great review Reuben,I am a beginner to intermediate SUP surfer. 65kg (with no wetsuit in summer) , about 164cm , mid 40s with no previous surfing experience, height who only SUP surfs 1-3ft beach breaks . I have been SUPing for 18 months and am fairly accomplished in terms of paddling . I have been SUP surfing for 5 months on a Starboard ISup Converse 9ft and also another brand which is carbon 7'11, 130L, 4 3/4 thick, 32 wide which has a pulled in nose and tail. I actually find the iSup easier to catch waves on . The 7'11 also is quite corky for a short board and I struggle with wave count .I am hence considering the 8'6 Hypernut . Although it is aimed at a bigger advanced SUP surfer , I thought that at my level and with the additional glide it may be a better option than the 7'8 Hypernut . Other options I have considered are the 8'10 Sunova Speeed or 8'6 Sunova Skate . The Speeed concerns me due to the tippiness feel of the domed deck. I much prefer the flat deck. The shorter length of a stubby nose is also great on beach breaks especially due to concerns over pearling .Is my consideration for an 8'6 reasonable ?ThanksGeorge

Hey, What fin set up have you got on your hard board? Does it have a US box center fin? The Starboard will be easier for you to surf then the Sunovas due to the width and wide nose. The HN will still need a bit of concentration to paddle in on a wave because of the quad fins and it not having a bigger US box fin which helps tracking. The question is... Is it ease of tracking and glide you want out of a board or a super turny board on a wave? Anything with smaller thrusters or quads will take a bit of practice to get use to. Its always comes down to length Vs width. The wider the board is the slow less tracking and glide it will have. That why your iSUP catches anything at 9' X30''. Another board to look at might be the 8'5'' X 30'' Starboard pocket Rocket. But the 8'6'' HN is just a new version of it but doesn't have as much tracking. Hope that helps a little??? SUPboarder Hi Reuben. Thanks for the info. To clarify I have a thruster on the 7'11 surf shape SUP but to date have mainly only used the centre fin box as I am not really turning box much yet. Mainly learning to move feet around on board, engaging rail and using paddle to control things. I have had quite a bit of practice in the flats with the 7'11 and I am fairly adept at paddling it in a semi surf stance and can get it to track pretty straight. I was fortunate enough to be able tondemo the 2016 8'6 hypernut on the flats about 9 months ago. I found it easy to balance on and paddle but it was 140L back then . I surprised at how well it paddled . So much easier than the 9'5 Naish Mana which felt ridiculously large . The hypernut actually felt like it paddled straighter . As I am short and light at 65kg and surf only mushy busy surf breaks I don't really want a barge out there. The beauty of these "noseless" boards seems to be that you can go a 1 foot less than what you would normally use in a standard surf shape. Based on my stats everything is pointing to a board like a 7'4 hypernut , but I would probably go safe with a 7'8. However I would also consider the 8'6 with the extra glide I expect to get (the 8'0 is almost same volume as 8'6 so not considering that). I have also considered the 8'5 Pocket Rocket but how would that compare in terms of stability to the 7'8 hypernut ? In brief , a shorter, stable board for my 65kg frame that catches the board fairly easily is what would be great. Anything 8'6 or less would be great . My gut feeling is that a 7'8 hypernut or 8'5 pocket rocket would be a good choice . The crazy side of me is thinking 8'6 hypernut because at my weight I could almost use it like a long board ???? Cheers George

Hey George, Sounds like you have thought about it and you are coming up with some pretty good ideas. Stability wise the PR and the HN will be pretty similar. If you have use the 8'6'' on the flat and it paddles OK and you don't mind the bigger feel on a wave then go for it. These boards are holding the value on the second hand market so if you grow out of it in a few years you can always sell it and jump down a size. Thanks Reuben / SUPboarder

Very informative. You didn't happen to review the nut? the longboard version. Trying to find more info but most of my search results have been drowned out by the hyper nut.

Hi Ruben, looking to get a hard board, gong mob, I'm 80kg intermediate sup surfer, was thinking a 8'3, 32 width board with 140 volume, or should I go for the smaller 7'11, 29 width and 120 volume with my weight?
@SUPboardermag4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brendan, Depending on what board you have now and the rate of your progression you may find going for the 140 L board not enough of the jump. If you're super comfortable a paddling 32 wide boards and boards with less length, then possibly going for the 711 will be a better bet and will last you longer. If you were 90 kg I think the 83 would be a better choice. It's all about how comfortable you are on the boards you have now? Thanks Reuben

Thanks for a great review Reuben. A question for you, which out of a HNut and 10' stylemaster would work best in a mix of cross wind chop and nice clean days. Thanks again for an excellent resource 😀
@SUPboardermag7 жыл бұрын
Hey Richard, If you are looking at comparing the 8'6'' HN to 10' Stylemaster. The Starboard is livelier and likes to be thrown around more, and the Fanatic has more glide and is way smoother to ride. Fanatic will work better in the cleaner conditions and the HN will works better in a wider range of conditions. All depends on what feel you want out of your board. Smooth or Lively ? Hope that helps Reuben / SUPboarder

Great review. How does it compare to the sunova speed. I'm planing on getting a 130 l board all round board but can't decide between the speed 8 10 or this hypernut. I know you have reviewed the speed also . Cheers
@SUPboardermag7 жыл бұрын
The speed is thin in width and faster on the wave face. Both boards work really well. But the Hyper Nut is easy to paddle and more forgiving because of the wider nose. Keep an eye out for SUPboarder Pro, which we are launching next week, where we're going in to more details on the boards and compare them to other on the market too.

Great review,as per usual, but who are the rest of this supboarder team? Apart from you and will who are they?!

We have a collection of different ability's and weight riders. A brief run through: Dave G, a more traditional good long board rider weighing 85kg - Will R, advanced shorter board rider 65kg - Don C, very progressive intermediate rider at 85kg - Lucy E, a experienced SUP surfer weighing 68kg and - myself a general dogs body, all style rider weigh 75kg. I'm just the one that has to stand in front of the camera all the time. (apparently i have the talk for it! ;-) For the 2018 season we are going to be going over the riders that do the reviews more. And in time growing the team. Hope that helps. Thanks Reuben

oh wow. thought that it was merely a man, a passion, a camera and a very VERY nice selection of boards but it seems you are far more of a large enterprise!

Hi Reuben. I'm kinda messed up, can't make up my mind on which size'd suit me better: 7'8'', 7'4'', even 7'2''? 5'11'' 68-70kg beginner/intermediate rider on a Drive (couple times a week as average), wouldn't like to go wider than 30'', usual conditions less than ideal... Your (and other's) advice/opinions would be most appreciated
@SUPboardermag8 жыл бұрын
Hey Frenando, If you've been using your Drive a fare bit, and being the weight you are, you shouldn't have to go too big on a Hyper. The biggest thing you will find you will have to get used to is the short nose length. The 7'8'' will be a little big for your weight really. The 7'4'' or the 7'2'' will be do-able, it's just how much of a jump you want to go down on board sizes? I can guarantee that eventually somebody of your body weight would be riding something more like 7'2''. But it obviously all comes down to time on the water and how stable, and how performance based you want the board to be. The smaller you go the harder it will be to use initially but if you put some time in, the more rewarding it will be on wave.Hope that helps, Reuben / SUPboarder Team

SUPboarder Wow! Thanx a lot for the fast and thorough response, you've earned a couple beers whenever we meet (may that be on the water or elsewhere). Almost at same price, would you go for '16 7'2'' wood or '17 7'4'' starlite? Being similar vol., is there so much difference in stability/performance? (That one's for an upgrading in the amount/quality of the above mentioned drinks owed;) )
@SUPboardermag8 жыл бұрын
We're here to help. The new Starlight is great and really tough and hard wearing. I would pick the new Starlight over a last years board. Size wise, the 7'2'' is thicker but thinner in width at 28'' not 30'' like the 7'4''... Go for the 7'4'' then you will be able to really enjoy and progress with the board. I will usually always pick a board with a thinner thickness profile over width anyway. They will nearly always produce better performance at the rail shape. And then in a few years buy the 6'10'' ;-). thanks Reuben / SUPboarder team

Hi, is this suitable for a 95kg rider? I'm new to Sup surf if that's anything.
@SUPboardermag7 жыл бұрын
This board would be fine for your weight. I guess the question is, how easy do you want the board to be. A board like the bigger Starboard Widepoints could be good too. And being longer they will be easier to paddle. Thanks Reuben
