Thank you for this post and your production efforts. My childhood friend's parents both started for NW in the mid 1940's. Father was a navigator who later went into management and Mom was a stewardess. They were very generous and included me on a three week vacation to Hawaii in 1969. We flew first class and had the VIP treatment. I can still remember the steak dinner and baked Alaska for dessert. His Father loved his career at NW and served for over forty years. I always preferred the 1960's livery with the black "Northwest" script. You always knew a NW jet with the red tail.

You are very welcome and I’m very delighted to hear your experiences w NW, and your parents both deep in NW ops, awesome. Living abroad at the time in Asia, Taipei, the daily big red tail stole the show arriving daily from Hong Kong enroute to Tokyo-Haneda (1970s) I’d spend all day atop the observation deck with nose of the jet just 20 feet away! I also get your meal recall, same here ..I can still smell the steak, green beans and baked potatoes on an American 707 and complained about wanting a hotdog instead! Beautiful memories, the absolute best!

I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane. I flew Northwest Orient from Chicago to Rochester, MN for my first time when my Dad and aunt went to the Mayo Clinic in Feb., of 1980. We flew back to Chicago on a North Central DC-9-30 but with a black Republic Airlines taped over the North Central, they just merged with Southern Airways then. I took a Northwest Airlines 747 400 to Tokyo Narita from DTW and then another 747 400 to Hong Kong Kai Tak in Dec of 1987. If I remember, the Orient name was missing and it was just Northwest but in Northwest Orient colors. Ahhhh Kai Tak, loved the walk out on the ramp and seeing that big bird with the red tail, just awesome!! Thanks for the memories.

Love the great of those trips, I know how special those were and wished IPhones were around during those years, I had done Kaitak around that same time as well and is indeed a one of a kind arrival. I remember the NW change from Northwest Orient to Northwest ..and did not like it. A good shot of one is in the ‘Best Damn 747 vid. I felt something was missing with that title change and loved original scheme seen here.

Great memories seeing these take off and land in Honolulu as a kid, never forgot that livery, the big red letters NORTHWEST ORIENT.

I was a NWA employee in the early 90’s and flew to Honolulu. If you flew first class you had to wear a suit and tie. When I was leaving, I walked to the counter and the agent said, “You’re non-reving?” I asked how she knew, and she said that since I was wearing a suit and tie in Honolulu it was pretty obvious! Duh! I miss NWA!

Flew on a Northwest Orient 727 from Miami to Seattle (with 4 stops in between: must have been a "milk run!") back in August of 1966. That plane was fairly new back then; always liked its somewhat futuristic look. My seat was in the rear, a window seat next to the engine, which looked pretty big to a 9 year old. My favorite look was the one they used in the '60's with "Northwest" on the tail ( I may be wrong, but I read that the reason they painted the tail red was for safety purposes (better seen by other aircraft). The look after that one was OK, also. Didn't care for the ones after that, especially the all silver look with "NWA" on the fuselage. Just curious; does Delta have any of their planes painted in retro "Northwest" livery? If not, they should. Anyway, nice video; thanks for the memory! Sad to see airlines like this go away.

My first 747 ride was on Northwest Orient from Seattle to Hawaii in 1971. Did it again the year after. Super service back in those days, meals and endless cocktails for my mom and dad even in coach. My gawd they even gave us lei's upon arrival. (No not those kind of lei's)

Great upload once again! My company , Olympic Airways, has had a common path with Nortwest back in the early 70's. Onassis bought 2nd hand, 7 B720s, reg from SX-DBG to SX-DBN. Also 2 707s SX-DBO, SX-DBP. At the time and until 1974, my father was stationed in Nicosia Cyprus as the Olympic station engineer, and was among the first to receive 720s in flights to the island. Initially they were flown by NW captains and f/e's , training the Greek crews. I was in my teens, and just getting ready for my aviation studies, so I was interested and involved with them, looking for advises... Still remember names of these wonderful guys. Cpt Atkins, cpt Landis, cpt Jimmy Towel... The planes had come from storage,and initially had frequent minor electrical problems, the cure being the magic WD-40 spray! My dad had one on him at all times... When I was employed in Olympic as a ground mechanic, worked a lot on the 720s,and participated in their mod, of installing a second overwing emergency window, so as to increase their pax capacity. Later on ,I flew the 707's along our own. DBP had become solely cargo... The drag was that NW had lbs instead of kilos in the fuel gauges, so we had to convert everytime.. Lastly, I remember the mark of the removed red triangle below cockpit windows on the bare aluminum skin. Cleaners were never able to erase that mark...the dark blue cheat line remained, as being same color with Olympic. In general a lot of memories. Sorry for being too long. Cheers!

The good old days I remember as a little kid, I would always want to fly NWA and whenever we flew a different airline, I was pointing the NWA ticketing counter to my mom as I thought my parents make a mistake or something. Long live Northwest Orient GONG Airlines da da da.

@@Starboard76 Yeah I wish I could’ve flown in Northwest 747 my original plan as a little kid was to be a captain for Northwest but obviously that’s not gonna happen so I’m planning on being a captain for Delta to do the international routes out of Minneapolis

Great footage! Northwest were the first operator of the 747-400. A number of their 707’s were sold to Cathay Pacific in the early 70’s

I remember that too, loved seeing those Cathay 707s pull up the ramp at Kaitak and in Taipei.

Thank you. That is very nice. I miss NW. This brought back many memories. The old jingle. Where in the world did you find the footage of the -7C pulling into the gate?! The distinctive sound of the JT-3D's. The row of 722's in " strike" formation. The 720B landing. Just wonderful. (Where are the 188's?) Thank you!

You are the very person this was made for and thanks for checking it out. well as I've gone back and re-edited some popular vids (mostly coloring them up) I have a feeling I've revisit this sometime down the road, likely after I acquire more 707 footage, that was my favorite 707 look. And who knows what other goodies I'll stumble upon, L-188s Electras? Very likely!
