He may have 'piggy backed' on the original signal. He was able to detect their signal, so they have FTL transmissions. He could have come up with a way to just use the incoming signal and turn it into a bidirectional signal. After all according to the story he is a technological prodigy.

I get bogged down with the science. First, exactly how far away was this ship? And how did it respond? Directionally, Omnidirectionally? Furthermore, considering he started without knowing the language, the odds that he recognized anything (much less a flaw in the communication). Then a reference to the "code" (1 line in a million). In a computer language, for a culture that doesn't use English, and he did not know their language. Furthermore, than line of code, would have been compiled into binary, and 1000% invisible to him on the outside. This kid would have been so smart that he could break the 256 Bit BitCoin Blockchain in days or hours to pull all of this off.. But how long between the "Ping" being sent, to the "response" coming back. Assuming John did not have FTL (Faster than Light) communications hidden under a trampoline out back... I believe John would have died an very old man before the 3rd or 4th cycle of communications. Finally, having worked on some encryption and compression code in my lifetime. The difficulties of ripping open a stream of TCP/IP data that has been Zipped (compressed), and then Encrypted with a large key, like any modern HTTPS compressed connection... Is insurmountable for humans today. Imagine the Encryption/Compression of that mothership? Furthermore, like our patriot missiles with their friend or foe handshake. There should be no way to establish a connection. you build into the protocol that kind of handshake. Otherwise, I generally like your writing. But they let this kid off too easily if they actually destroyed a planet over his pranks. I think a few skirmishes that might have destroyed a planet (hopefully I did not miss-hear it at triple speed).

These HFY stories are great. I only discovered them a few weeks ago and have been soaking them in. My only question is who writes them all? I've heard differing opinions on the subject. Some people say they're AI creations. Which is believable enough for the time. Some say they are human penned. I'm hoping actual people are writing most, if not all of these. If they are AI creations, well, that sort of kills the whole "humanity" aspect of the subject.

There is a subreddit named r/hfy (humans, fxxx yeah). Those stories have known authors, although perhaps only handles instead of real names. But the quest for clicks and eyeballs has led to people creating stories aided by AI tools. Not all creators are equally skilled and aiming for the highest quality.

Alternate title: Nerdy kid becomes a galactic hero Don't really like this one so much. Reads a bit like some cringy power fantasy, kid's a bit of a gary stu (not always a bad thing, to be clear). The problem is that it's a kid, and he just goes off with aliens without a second thought or mention of it to his parents? They're mentioned once and forgotten immediately. And then a literal child brokers peace between an advance species? Eh... can't all be winners.

The problem with this story is that the same plot has been used over and over again. Dumb humans defeat overconfident aliens by taking over their computer systems. Having their own ships turn on them selves. Humans win.
