Starcon Старкон 2016 - COSPLAY IN RUSSIA - Part 2

STARCON ( / geekersvideo ) aka Старкон is a multi-genre convention held in St Petersburg Russia. Fans not only dress in cosplay but build backdrops and sets based on their favorite franchises. There are various physical games and stunts going on throughout the convention, including laser tag, a ropes course, and VR games. Skaters and bmx bikers were jumping over cosplayers. A pole-dance competition resulted in a PS4 prize. Attendees were shooting arrows at a volunteer batman. There was a cosplay fitness competition where cosplayers showed of their costumes and muscles. Starcon was pretty crazy and pretty cool.

Yeah, I think the most popular fandoms were Witcher, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Warhammer 40k, Team Fortress, Fallout, Marvel & DC - decent amount of Star Wars and Star Trek too.

That arrow catching is insane (in the best way). Did you shoot all of the stage footage on the A7S, the colour and lighting is fantastic.

Actually most of the Stage footage is the DJI OSMO. It worked really well for the stage. However, I also used it to film the convention floor at then end and it was kind of grainy during that part. But it's a really cool stabilized wide angle camera, definitely worth the price.

Thats awesome I didn't know the Osmo could do that kind of low light work - it looks fantastic. Did you shoot the long outdoor shots in part one with the Osmo as well? (sorry for all the questions)

yeah some of them like when everyone was hugging. from my limited time with the osmo (this was my first time using it) - i think it worked fine in situations like the stage where it's a mix of dark and bright light. but if things are evenly dim, I think the higher ISO on it can get pretty grainy or in auto, it will go to a blurry shutter speed. I'm still testing it out. I may even do a review video of it at some point.

Thats really interesting, I've heard such mixed things about the Osmo. It would be great to see your review and hear more about it in real world shooting conditions. Thanks for taking the time to answer really appreciate it. (Also - loved the hugging shot in part one!)

I think the value for the price is really great. It's just that it's for limited situations. For a deep-focus wide-angle stabilized 4k camera, it's a good deal. But in low-light, or when you want a bunch of DoF and lens options - the Osmo doesn't replace the SLR's. On the way back from Russia I stopped in Iceland to camp and hike, and just brought the Osmo to spare myself the weight of my usual camera - and it' worked very nicely there. But I had acknowledged that I'd only be getting wide shots.

Hey Micah, what editing software do you use? For special effects in previous videos like Mario Warfare, did you use the software itself or something else? They are really cool!

I switched from FCP to Premiere a while back. I don't like some of the UI choices in Premiere but it's quite powerful in handling different codecs. Overall I like it. I switched when I started editing 4k video. For basic visual effects like muzzle flashes, smoke, blood, explosions, etc. I use After Effects. For a few 3d things like the ships in Mario Warfare and helicopters in Modern Gear, Rick made them with Blender and Maya.
