StarCraft 2 Co-op: Urban Warfare on Brutal!

This week's mutation in StarCraft 2 turns out to be truly brutal.

Some co-op mutation missions are easier than others. Even on the brutal difficulty some of them are still a walkover. This week's one however requires a very specific approach. The "Urban Warfare" mutator makes moving around the battlefield extremely difficult, especially because Widow Mines keep on sniping the available detectors.
In this mutation I play with Karax. Karax has the strongest static defence in the game, and without it I don't think this mission is doable. The Cannons detect the cloaked units, but on top of that they can not be targeted by the Widow Mines or Spider Mines. However, Karax has difficulty fighting up ramps and he's not going to be the most well-rounded Hero when it comes to army compositions.

I'll summarize what the others have said [and add my own thoughts] that I think will be helpful for the next Karax run: - The enemy AI doesn't target Artosis Pylons. We do not need to overbuild them. - Photon Cannons are more effective than Khaydarin Monoliths because of [1] less cost, [2] detection, which Monoliths don't have, [3] higher attack speed, which is more useful vs mines. - Observers have a surveillance mode that immobilizes them but gives them a much greater vision radius. Kinda like siege mode. This is great for seeing up the high ground, and spotting for your monoliths. - Chrono Surge and Purifier Beam are both cooldown-based and use no energy, so I like to just use them whenever they become available so I can have more of them per game. - Artanis is the undisputed best commander for this mission because [1] Guardian Shell extends your life so much because Mines are burst damage and basically get used up immediately, giving your units free reign after that [2] Tempests (Level 11) outrange both mines and Photon Overcharge, [3] he can warp in observers, giving instant detection. - 52:45 - That was Kerrigan's Nydus. You can use them for your own ground units so the notification is actually helpful. :P Great entertaining video. Can I add your videos to my BNet/Reddit posts for mutations?

also, im thinking, artanis would be the best for this if the cannon thing was the greatest of ideas in the world because of the spear of adun pylon thing... i mean, scout with observers, put pylon field if necessary, then the cannons... but the main thing i think is the observers cause overseers and vorazun oracles will just die to the widow mines like that *snap*. they arent proper detection on this map

@LowkoTv Just a small thing i noticed with your Karax plan. A small fix with dramatically make it better lol. It is critical to get 2 upgrades for Karax asap. #1 is the shield ability for batteries in the forge and #2 is the Shield battery energy regeneration upgrade in the Twilight Council. Those 2 upgrades makes your cannon line super effective at survival because they receive early/mid game shields and super fast energy regeneration from the beginning thus healing your buildings 24/7. (allowing you to spend a little less on cannons and more on Carriers with Air attack upgrades) a Also start grouping better, maximum space usage even with cannon rushing with no space in-between buildings (helps your damage be focused on a common area of defense). A basic setup is pylon with 3 cannons in the front (row 1) towards the enemy direction and 2 shield batteries on the sides of the pylon in (row 2 including the pylon) . You can add 2 monoliths to the back line(row 3). Its how i can be supper effective with karax with maximum resource spending with the goal of not losing buildings. I am no protoss expert at all in normal SC but in co-op I got Karax mastered. Try that idea in a symetrical fasion to just see it then you can adapt it to angles. C=Cannon B=Shield battery P=Pylon M=Monolyth CCC BPB MM

Nice vid lowko. I did this with Artanis on brutal on the 1st try using mass tempest and observer since the observer can have the same area of detection as Karax's cannons with it's skill and can move while the tempests clear the way for your ally or even snipe everything from the safety of the sides.

I love your plays Lowko. Khaydarin monolith is a type of defensive structure what best pays off when placed at the back, behind photon cannons. Yet you always place it up front where gets destroyed after one shot. :D

Hey Lowko, may I ask why you didn't upgrade your energizers so they could take control of enemy mechanical? Not an expensive upgrade, and it gives you enemy units for 2 mins leaving their attack weaker and your own stronger. Even after the 2 minutes, the controlled units suicide. Did you simply forget? or is there an other reason?

Having Artanis is nice. Tempests' Disintegrate and the Guardian Shell passive are super useful in this. I was able to cheese with just a ton of Corsairs and skirt the outside and take out the shards, plus Vorazun's passive to save cloaked units. Really just abilities that save units are real nice for that last push especially if you have like nydus or recall to constantly reinforce your army quickly.

Hey Lowko, you don't need to make so many pylons. Use the range to save your minerals and make more cannons instead. Put your cannons on the edge of the field and have an energizer following your main probe around to energize whatever you put down.

Karax/Artanis is by far the best combo for this. Artanis tempests outrange mines and overcharge, and the reconstruction beam/guardian combo is overpowered as hell on this map.Karax can easily get detection with probes near the army for cannons, and artanis can insta warp in detection

You should try out kerrigan and vorazun. Their combo-ults are dangerous. And with the right masteries, timing and good-enough size of army, deadly for every enemy base. And you barely loose any unit at the end.

you should place the shield batteries in front of the cannons... at least for the cannons you put near your bases i don't think the monolith can detect cloaked units also, keep chrono on the solar forge. it will increase the rate of energy regen.

nah Lowko, this one i did first try even tho mines screwed me in the start with getting gas to Vorazun, but Zagara banelings are really usefull here, my partner was also pretty good. and also time stop is amazing

My friend and I had what seemed to be an easier time, by doing Swann Vorazun. Even managed to bonus objective without issue too. Dark pylon, dark archon, with gas drones for Vorazun's archon DT and I don't know Swann personally. Granted this isn't to say there wasn't any issue at all, just that it didn't take us an hour to do so. :P

Just Swan is good enough. You can drill and tank leap to mine sweep while your partner protects them with air. I guess your partner can kill the bonus with the air too if there's time. Karaz has reduced range so it's not as good cuz karaz can't really solo the bonus.

Yeah, or you can do ranyor tanks and swan goliaths. I think the goliaths have enough range to shoot over the tanks to hit most units too. Tanks seem to be rally good at leveling those monoliths too. You just need to get the there in one piece.

Funny enough with the gas bonus I could perma produce/chrono-boost 3 carriers at once, and with the range upgrade for drones it was efficient to trigger and destroy mines safely plus getting rid of the first bonus easily. I'm not really the turret kind of guy with Karax, his units get so efficient and cheep with masteries that it's kind of a waste to not make them imo.

Yes, and yes. The mind control is extremely good but requires a lot of actions. Generally speaking it doesn't seem to be worth it.

Because, I believe the barrier upgrade and Adun energy regen can be researched immediately by the time the first chrono wave become available, thus you can save up early energy... Though, by now you should begin to level up another hero... Kerrigan, most likely.

Watch some games by great players, such as Lowko here and try some of their strategies/ build orders. You may not get the timings the same, but the general unit compositions will help immensely! Most of what moved me up into gold was just knowing what units to build and when, not micro. I still can't attack and macro to save my life...

I think the archons look all messed up is because of a combination of two things; 1) They are like, 99% energy, and even in normal multiplayer, they look like they are. That provides most of their appearance in this game, but 2) When a unit is cloaked, then they gain a silvery appearance. Combine these two, and the archons appearance is a little strange, but not unexpected.

Now i didn't do it on brutal (i am a scrub who can onnly play on coop hard), but another good choice is artanis, because of the dragoon possibility with the upgraded range, And the ability to drop observers anywhere, your coop companion just has to hold the first push and you can rush observers to make the mission alot easier

Karax+Artanis -- Karax builds many cannons to help observation, batteries and carriers to help repair artanis's tempests so they won't die! Artanis builds a whole army of tempests and MOST importantly, produce the ob immediately to detect enemies in the battle field! This combination is just too powerful!!! You don't even need micro-controls and move your army pretty much! As you build a LOT of cannons and batteries along your way, any enemy attack should be detected and delayed. When they come, Karax should be able to use SPEAR OF ADUN to burn them to the ground!

I managed to clear this by slow push only with cannons (no unit) so that I can guaranteed my partner's army safety with a detection. Honestly, the last push was such a pain (THOSE HIGH RAMP !!). However, in my opinion the best commander here could be Artanis. His guardian shell can rendered spider/widow mines useless. Artanis+Vorazun combo can almost ignore the mines (Gshell with DT respawn). Only down point is Artanis has to be specialize in controlling the.... err.... Observer.

Artanis with mass tempest is really good for this 1. since it greatly out ranges widow mines and high dps from tempest make photon overcharge useless (most buildings get insta killed with like 20 tempests)

in my case it was very easy with vorazun cause cloaked units only can get destroyed if they are spotted So you can easily destroy the mines and have the biggest Problems away Furthermore the level 14 ability makes it even much better; if your cloaked units would die they respawn at their building in this case the dt building.

All those pylons and cannons and such just get left behind as you move forward. Isn't that kind of a waste of resources? I guess the alternative is units, which are destroyed more easily, and I guess the satellite firepower does the work of a lot of units. Have you tried using a different hero, and just building up a massive army? I guess those long range tower things with shield battery support are probably the most effective composition element to use against this type of enemy force.

Vorazun and Swann the best team for this. Swann for the gas drone, and you can go DT and not to mention that timestop is OP and reveal everything in the map. Literally the easiest mutation for this week

You know what works on this map? Cyclone. It can a-move mines. And with Vorazun, you might be able to pull units to get DT action without them blowing up.

the kaldarin monoliths or something arent detectors. i think you shouldve gone cannons only maybe a few monoliths to help out but not that many. also they have very low dps compared to two cannons, cannons would be a lot better

Overproduce the supply unit/structure by 1 once you get above 70 supply. Like double build overlords or triple build them.

Suad Dizdarevic Yes. Even the very top pros do it. I'd seen both Jaedong and Flash do it when they expect to be doing a lot of micro. Because there's simply no time to go back and build while you're in the middle of an intense battle. Once you get to about 140 supply, triple building is perfectly fine. At about 70 supply, double building is fine. Every time you make a round of units, make the supply units or structures. Check to see if you've too much floating resource. If you do, spend it on an expansion, more production structures or upgrades or tech. Because producing supply is now part of a chain of actions, it should come automatically with a bit of practice.

So, if you didn't figured that out yet... you get BONUS time after you finish each bonus objective, so there is no point in delaying first one what so ever. Another strange thing is... it took you 3 attempts to figure out that carriers are bad at this mutation... it's like... mines one-shot like almost ALL of your interseptors and photon overcharge finish off the remaining ones, so you have an expensive unit that does 0 dmg, and you have alot of them, i can understand that you wouldn't figure it out after reading mutations description, but after 1st attempt it was obvious that they were useless, couldn't you see that your carriers had no interseptors in them?.. for like 3 tries in a row?.. And yeah, cannons are way better then monolyths and putting up alot of bateries is a good option too. Personaly i find this mutation pretty easy. The ones with explosive enemies is a nightmare if you're playing against zergs or bio terran, your armies will shrink in a blink of an eye (even though against a protoss it was a walk in the park).

awww I thought it was the easiest one yet. Went as Swann solo Q, was paired with a Karaz and did it 1º try np as if there wasnt a mutation at all =/ Science vessels, range upgrades and karaz global support was enough
