Contrary to their famous quote, Archons are fairly underwhelming in terms of what they can do vs what you expect of them. Low range, mediocre DPS, their AOE is mediocre at best. Their hit points are decent, but 360 hit points sits in that awkward spot of being tankier than average but still meh as a damage tanker.

Archons are still quite underwhelming for their supposed “destructive fury”. I would love to see them buffed at least somewhat to make them more fitting their lore. Like, maybe make their damage go from 25 (35 vs bio) to 30 (45 vs bio). Maybe increase their splash radius instead. Or maybe have their base Shield Toughness (Shield Armor) be at least 2, if not 3. Or even in-combat regenerating shields? Like it regenerates shields (2 per second) like all Protoss does out of combat, but it retains it in combat? Or maybe EMP from ghosts don’t work on Archons because its shields don’t seem to be from focusing units like the other Protoss. Seriously, they are so generic and just an expensive wall with not too much use except for very few cases. Even the Zerg isn’t too disadvantaged because it only does 10 extra damage to bio… at a mediocre rate. Seriously, I think Archons in StarCraft 1 have an attack speed of like 50% or so faster.

Archons are a good idea for zerg except there is a problem: no dark templars can merge into archons in the campaign or Co-Op missions.

That will force you to make high templars which costs a lot of gas

Amons reach on shakuras especially is really hard with no archons and only dark templars and stalkers to counter air power and ultralisks.

The fact that you get a vanilla archon regardless of which templar you use was a total let down for me. Such a perfect chance to show off some variety and new tactics, but ultimately lost to Blizzard's homogeneity. I want my Dark Archon and Twilight Archon please. Thank you lol

Actually archons burn out pretty quickly “power overwhelming” indeed but to the point that they cant sustain themselves long term and will run out of power eventually it’s more of a last stand/sacrifice for greater good type of transformation

It could be for balance, it could be for thematic reasons (they are balls of energy, so I guess give it shields). I know that they had similar stats all the way back in StarCraft 1, but am unsure of any official or stated reasoning.
