I personally believe Tychus knew what he was doing. "Damn if you do, damned if you don't" situation on his hands, his suit became armed. So after this long campaign with Jim, he chose his only way out, death. He could have kept his visor down, he could have used an explosive, he could have went full auto, but he didn't. Now Tychus is prideful, he isn't just gonna let someone pop him, he had his best friend kill him in a fight. If i may borrow a quote from Bioshock, "A man chooses, a slave obeys".

I love how Tychus starts off with wanting his freedom so bad that he's willing to kill Kerrigan. But it slowly turns into him wanting to just let Jim be happy with Kerrigan. Because he knew that no matter what choice we would make (killing or sparing her) he would die anyways. So he took one for the team

You know what the worst part of this all is though? This all goes over Jim's head and calls Tychus a traitor afterwards, leaving his body to rot on Char instead of collecting it for a final send-off, like a friend. He expected Tychus to understand his position on why he wanted to save Kerrigan, but didn't expect that he himself understand why Tychus did what he did. And this is why I hate SC2 Raynor. The man would throw his best friend under the bus to simp for the worst mass murderer in the sector.

Regarding Tychus, there is a bit of insightful dialogue by Gabriel Tosh (if still alive) after the Cantina fight (jukebox incident). I'd have to look up the exact quote, but Raynor goes to him and says: "You're up here always watching everything. What do you see with Tychus? Is he just a mean drunk?" Tosh's reply: "I wish it was simple as that. All the jealousy and rage, *he's fighting himself over something he doesn't want to do.* You'll see." After realizing Raynor would never go along with killing a de-infested Kerrigan, and not wanting to also kill Raynor; Tychus was in a no-win situation. He ultimately makes the sacrifice of having Raynor kill him instead of Mengsk shutting down his suit. -- Mengsk would have also done if Tychus tried to inform Raynor, so instead Tychus made the deliberate 'error' of contacting Mengsk when they found Kerrigan, knowing Raynor would overhear. And then allowing Raynor every opportunity to kill him in defense of Kerrigan. -- It's sad because Raynor sees his choice as a betrayal, but if he didn't he might not have killed Tychus.

@John Saf I know this question is quite old, but the novels actually try to explain this. So, going with what we get to know there, apparently, Mengsk was well informed about Valerians plan to use the Xel-Naga artifact to deinfest kerrigan, and knew she was easily slain without her Zerg powers. Also, she is not invincible to damage (otherwise, you wouldnt even be able to beat her back), her power is that she can regenerate frighteningly fast which make it seem like she is immortal. Back in the Broodwar final mission (where Kerrigan won against nearly everyone) one Key factor was that the all the factions there were unconclussive and except for the UED quickly retreated the moment they got under serious fire. They simply failed to swiftly exterminate Kerrigan, who had legions of Zerg coming to her aid in a seemingly endless supply while everyone else was pretty much beaten down after what they went through during the Campaign Now, back to the SC2 finale. Mengsk knew what was gonna happen and hid near char with the entire rest of the Dominion Fleet. Thats how he was able to give orders to Tychus. I am not saying that this is a 100% perfect explanation, but i hope it helps

@@zsushi3316 It really did. And while the whole story is not as gritty as SC1, i still think its quite worth while diving into. Specially the novels do a lot to explain and spice up the plot. For example...i never knew why Mengsk lowkey hated Kerrigan so much. Turns out, she was one of the Ghosts sent to Korhal all those years ago to kill the entire Mengsk family...and she ended up beheading his own father, and sending said head to the confederacy. Its brutal, but specially the backstory novels explain so much about the characters we grew to love and or hate in Starcraft

@@Rumcajss23 100%. Don't get me wrong, SC2 has the best story, but that doesn't make an RTS. I've played all three of those games extensively. Thousands and thousands of hours. TA is the best RTS game ever made. Single player is lacking, though at the time of release it was perfectly good enough. But multiplayer, it is untouchable. From 5 mninute rush plays, which RARELY work and - unlike SC2 - you cannot win by simply guessing a blind counter and getting away with it in the first few minutes. Some games can literally be HOURS long, because of the scope and scale and the infinite resources. WC3 and SC2 are difficult to pick against, one is macro based one is micro based. Both have great stories and lore and mechanics. But I give it to WC3 because of the variation of play it allows, with unit and hero diversity. SC2 has arcade modes going for it - custom game modes were amazing back in the day, but the decline in playerbased killed that. That's my opinion anyways. That's my top 3, and the reasons behind it. You can stick to your one word reply ;)

I like the effort Blizzard puts into subtle details like this red blinking light in Tychus' face which indicates the suit is armed now - Mengsk is watching & listening. Tychus is running out of time and after all these battles, his friendship for Raynor will come to an end now; either one way or another. He could have just shot immediately when they had found her. He was very likely the guy who raised his weapon which Raynor lowered down at 00:25. That's probably the moment, Tychus realized that Raynor won't let her being killed and his own fate is sealed. Spitting out his iconic cigarre is another indicator Blizzard gives us that Tychus is ready to go down. However I think Tychus would have pulled the trigger, but he deliberately wanted to give Raynor a chance (and choice). Tychus' line "I made a deal with the devil" heavily implies that he knew he cannot "win" anything - a dilemma from the getgo - and this is kind of ironic and tragic because: The moment Raynor says "Everyone makes his choices" the, at least, morally doubtful Tychus clearly gains the highground over the through-and-through positive written character Raynor. Tychus never truly had a choice himself but offered it to his best and maybe only friend - who even had let him get imprisoned - and got shot in his face... Chapeau Blizz. Tychus was a great one and it's been a pleasure riding the Odin alongside him :)

@i hate anime he was going to overthrow Mengsk, and he was actually close to topple him, but Valerian came with the offer that could save billions that is defeat Kerrigan. So thats why Raynor decided to go for Kerrigan instead of seeing his revolution through. Also your accusation with the marry sue thing doesn't really apply here. She had to do a lot of shit to get her power back instead of being OP right away. Despite her power in LOTV, she was still getting dunked on by the hybrids just shows that she isnt that powerful. Her ascension to Xel'naga was also fit because by that point she was the only one carrying the blessings of the two races.

I was more just noting that I hadn't seen the shell had gone into Jim's shoulder, I always saw the low quality version where it just looked like he deflected the shot with a shoulder nudge to the muzzle of Tychus' rifle, I didn't see he took that shell like a champ and still sent Tychus out like a warrior.
