I've always been really impressed how good the story telling was for Star Craft. For most video games the back story is little more than an afterthought but for Star Craft it was always the Heart and Soul of the Game. It's hard to appreciate just how much work went into the story behind Star Craft unless you watch all the Cutscenes together and then you realize it's NOT a video game with a story it's A Story that includes a Video Game.

You need to start from SC 1 then broodwar, then this one. There are several parties within each race, each with their own intentions that get intertwined several times then go separated ways, forging alliances, betrayals, plots and whatnot. So when you get to SCII a lot has happened already and has a lot of relevance already by the first second of the story on SCII. So, you cant really get it solely on this one.

For those that may not know: A) this is actually starcraft 2 and all of its expansion cinematics. none of these scenes are from Starcraft 1/brood war(the opening is a redux of Starcraft 1 Kerrigan being betrayed tho). B) ALOT of the story is missing here in this "movie" because most of the story is told through actual gameplay and voice dialogue from that gameplay. Its a pretty significant chunk of story missing aswell. for example alarak and his army is seen in a cutscene for a couple mins but says not 1 word and is a fairly important (and popular at the time) character. Same thing goes for the primal zerg which explains the origin of the zerg. Its really sad to see what became of blizzard because blizzards BS pretty much ruined the potential of this franchise. it SHOULD be bigger than League of Legends, ESPECIALLY as a esport, but blizzard just stopped caring after dropping the ball at some point.

Jonez In the briefing before the Mission "New Gettysburg" in SC I, Raynor shows feelings for Kerrigan when he tries talking her out of going on the mission to stop the Protoss from destroying all life on the planet below, (Tarsonis I recall, Mar Sara was already cleared), so there was something between the two when she was human. However, when she became infested by about Zerg Mission 4 to 6ish, yes, Raynor showed more hatred for her, especially later on when Kerrigan assassinated Fenix, (no one cared about General Duke lol). Ultimately, I agree the love story in SC II is a bit overplayed and I miss the Kerrigan from Brood War, who was a brutal bitch that declared herself "queen bitch of the universe" before the final mission of SC I Brood War, The Omega.

the word MASTERPIECE is just too little to describe the starcraft saga. This story.. how it started with SC1 .. and evolved to Broodwar and SC2... its UN-F-ing-REAL. IMO is one of the best games and stories ever created in the gaming world. I have around 40-50 years of life left ... and i hope to see this in the big screens as a trilogy. Starcraft is not just a game, at least no in the term of how games are made today. The story.. the gameplay.. the cinematics.. the thrill of advancing in campaign... is just so BIG deal. Thank you blizzard for giving me an amazing childhood that follows me 25 years later. To anyone out there... and especialy to young people... do yourself a favor and buy this game.. @@shawnadams1460 you and the fps guy have the right idea I think - the MMO space is still dominated by Warcraft, why would blizzard step on their own toes? But, a Titan 2.0? A MMOFPS with a persistent world, akin to a more fantasy version of Star Citizen or the like? I would absolutely play that. Or it would be pretty easy to make a hero shooter in that vein - but, they'd be stepping on their own toes again with that.

The last several levels in Brood War in SC I are incredibly intense. Highly recommend, and a great storyline. SC II has all kinds of fresh additions to the tech tree and the newer style of graphics in the cinematics definitely grew on me.

They're great games. I recommend starting with SC I for the full story and intense missions, especially the last several missions of Brood War.

SC2 is still a legit eSport today, as long as you can hit 200+ APM, you'll have fun...don't watch KZbin vids of Korean kids with 300 APM playing, it'll put you off. 3 races; Terran (Space Marines), Protoss (Eldar) and Zerg (Tyranids). All have very distinct strengths and weaknesses, you have to play the games through and A LOT of online PvP to understand this completely but if you understand what a 'build order' and a 'hard counter' is, you'll know what I'm talking about. Enjoy!

@A. Jonez Inaccurate. SC1 Raynor hated Queen of Blades, not Kerrigan. They were more than interested in each other in SC1. Story was well done. And it wasnt just love story, in fact, it was the minor part of the SC2.

@Louis I recall strategically placed bunkers, missile turrets near supply depots, and siege tanks in siege mode behind the bunkers but NO seige tanks near the Zerg base because they would often destroy a Zerg building and would cause mission failure; this was for defense, not victory. But yeah, it was a challenging map because expanding to get more resources required careful use of excess siege tanks and marines for anti aircraft, and only then could the victory fleet of Battle Cruisers could be built to defeat the Protoss with Yamato Guns.
