I'd say the majority of unhappy people either hate Bethesda anyway, are having technical issues that make them very upset (understandably), or they have made up their mind they won't like the game and aren't giving it a fair shake. The longer you play, the more you will like it, assuming it's your kind of game in the first place. If you don't like FPS style RPG's and all you want are space sims with space combat, then no you won't be too happy. I'm glad Mort is doing these videos piecemeal. It's a nice way for people to check out his point of view on the subjects that they are interested in.

The experience will be mixed at the start. Some things like pickpocket, stealth, some ship functions are literally impossible before using a skill point to unlock them. Which means you can avoid them entirely if it suits you, but also you will be punished to spend points in them if you want to be a jack of all trades. Some you realistically cant do until later, like you need to find a pack with flying options so you dont need the "can use booster packs" perk for the first 20 minutes of the game, but still. This means that some backstories are much better than others because they provide options that are essential to some playstyles. And backstories dont actually show the real skill info. Wellness for example just gives a max hp boost. Commerce just gives a slight vendor value improvement. While starting with Security you can pick Advanced locks quickly. Or some of the crafting skills, without which you can only craft only 5% of items in the category.

Just finished in 23 hrs on Hard. Going back in fresh now that I learned where I’d optimally want my skill points. I put my points in all 5 trees, with good amounts into Combat, Health and Social in my play through. Going to go mostly for the points that add mechanics to the game instead of boosting numbers.

I only just thought about it but it's actually crazy that there aren't any alien races you can play as. Bethesda touting this as their first new universe in 25 years and coming from the company that made the Elder Scrolls series where you can play 10 different races all with detailed history and lore surrounding them seems a bit of a cop out tbh, I dunno tho maybe aliens are coming in DLC 😅

It seems like there are two very different kinds of skills. There are skills that unlock options (like Stealth, Theft, etc) and there are skills that simply enhance options that you already had (eg, Pistols). Kind of like Active/Passive skills, but not really. I don't know what description would suit best. It would be nice to have an overview of which skills are best to get early to unlock additional options, eg being able to target enemy engines rather than just doing a bit more damage.

At the moment the resource and crafting skills do not work for companions. The combat ones and all the ones that impact the performance of your ship do though. I would imagine that this will change at some point, otherwise there'd be no point in them having the skills at all.

@@MortismalGaming I really enjoyed it. Took me around 30-35 hours to complete (True ending would've taken too long to do since Starfield is out in 2 days). If you're a fan of Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger I would definitely try it, because it's a sleeper indie hit. The pixel art is stunning, music was so good at some points where I just stood still to listening to it loop in some areas and the combat is very engaging (you can time attacks to do extra damage or timed dodges etc). Would definitely recommend it to anyone whos into JRPG's.

I disliked Fallout 4’s skill system in that you could level up everything and have no weaknesses. That diminished my fun because I like an rpg system to make me strong at certain things and weak in others. Sometimes taking things away is more fulfilling. What is Starfield’s skill system like? Is it like fallout 4 but for this game it feels better?

There isn't. Explosives are a Tier 2 skill, IIRC, and backgrounds only give you a single point in several Tier 1 skills. That being said, if you already have points invested in the Combat tree from your background you can get to the second tier that much faster.

It’s a novel trait with no downsides. Protagonists don’t usually have living parents that they can interact with, and your parents give you stuff that completely outweighs the money you pay out to them. Is it any wonder that it’s the most popular trait in the game at this point? I mean, if every reviewer stated that something that’s blue is blue, how does that count as “echoing the same thing over and over” when it’s stating an observable truth?
