the NPC's cant actually see, they can see enemies, but not much else, they are guided on a path of what are called navmesh triangles that allow them to sandbox or walk run in any general location. however bethesda could code their AI to seek out the closest object to hide behind, o i almost forgot to mention so about the navmeshing, you know that moment when an NPC will run into a wall or walk into a wall, they are following the pathing of the navmeshing, and sometimes bethesda are lazy and don't take into consideration that some of that navmesh is placed in bad spots, probably because they mostly did the navmeshing via procedural generation which doesn't see objects in the pathing route which causes NPC's to run into walls thinking they can go that path, they can do it by hand, but these tile sets are quite large and to do that kind of thing by hand is hell to get done just by yourself. and that's more than likely the cause of why so many NPC's are retarded.

I am a modder and can explain this a bit, a lot of things have been dumbed down to allow this to run on lesser systems, aka "optimizations". One major issue with the creation engine is its script execution where you can't have too many things going on at once and scripts often ends up in queue and on paus. This is why you often stumble on bugs when too many things are going on at once, or your system is running slow. Can we fix the game? Yes we can. Everything we done with Skyrim and Fallout we can do here as well and more, we got a plethora of new script calls and functions to play around with. But can we fix this for all? no. It will come at the cost of performance.
@AlexAdrift
@AlexAdrift Жыл бұрын
Thank you for insight. In your opinion, is the problem creation engine?
@5226-p1e
@5226-p1e Жыл бұрын
i think most of the navmeshing was done through procedural generation, and in some places locations they really needed to do it by hand, any building or location that is a city or a space ship, because we know what happens when there is to much navmeshing via procedural generation, the pathing of NPC's will try to run through objects that the navmesh path is presenting. i'm no modder, but i have watched many tutorials of modders talking about this stuff, and yeah navmeshing is just one of the many issues lol.
@TheCephalus

@@AlexAdrift Yes and no, modern game engines can take better advantage of modern systems, but won't always help much for those with lesser systems. A big issue in game development today is that consumer hardware is out of sync with the tech, and developers have to adapt to the lowest dominators. The most common consumer hardware today are still 1080 GPUs and i5 processors. If everyone had i7s and 3060 GPUs instead, gaming would look A LOT different. The Creation Engine, which powers Bethesda's games, has both pros and cons. It is a very robust engine, thanks to its simplicity, and can handle very large open worlds. It's known for its ability to handle a lot of failures before crashing. However, it does have its drawbacks. One notable downside is its performance, particularly in rendering. This means we might not see features like ray tracing in a Creation Engine game anytime soon. Likewise, when it comes to Papyrus, the scripting language used in the Creation Engine, it has its own set of pros and cons. It's a high-level interpreted scripting language, which means it can be slower in execution compared to compiled languages like C++. In complex games with many scripts running simultaneously, performance bottlenecks can occur. This can impact frame rates and overall gameplay smoothness. On the other hand, Papyrus has several advantages. Since it's tightly integrated into the engine, it makes for safe modding. This is a significant benefit compared to using languages like C++, where code execution could potentially occur outside the confines of the game program, posing security risks and making it more challenging to manage and maintain mods. Additionally, because it's a high-level interpreted scripting language, it allows us to directly execute it into the program without having to compile, making it very user-friendly.

I think you nailed it with your comments. The ships do seem godly especially when there are more than one. I try to play all the time on very hard setting to help AI but for multiship battles its tough. I also accidentally shoot my companion frequently as they run and stand infront of me during battles. I still marvel and long for the Red Dead Redemption dialogue and AI reactions. Whats with random NPC's having no clothers - I came across a guard in Akilla patrolling in boxer shorts? Overall I am liking the variety in the game shipbuilding, exploring, outpost building, questing etc. and really hope they can fix the annoying pieces. What really is starting to bug me is when I spend some times several minutes picking expert locks on safes etc. only to find a box of ammo and a snack. Shouldn't loot hidden behind a 4 point skill tree investment be more premium than what you find laying on tables?

The issues I want fixed, it the game stability. That is everything when it comes to an enjoyable play through. I am really tired of all the crashing, during a fast travel, random crashes, map loading glitches, outposts disappearing, twice have outpost 1 on zamka fallen out of existance, found the missing oupost on a previous save and deleted the out post, and resumes from that file. All these issues lead to a slowly corruping game file piece by piece, forcing me to either start over from an earlier save up to a new character. Two character files have already or are still in degragation, ship weapons disapear and have no power metter, ship spawing on top of me after a fast travel getting me stuck, ship lading in both locations (land zones and ship construction lander, corupting the game file beyond recoverablity on next ship use), maps degrading from under my feet causing me to fall into oblivion. It goes on and on. The last update made my game borderline unplayable. Im worried that these issues will eventually brick my Xbox, so I am not playing the game anymore until Bethesda fixes this. I have restarted my character 3 times and 4 hours into the new character file, already showing signs of small fundamental functiallity errors, which in turn will eventually lead to file degragation. 😔 the last update broke my game harder than it previously was, this whole game need to be degugged 😂 after 2 or 3 more updates Im just uninstall and reinstall.

Another big annoying thing: Bethesda introduces nonlethal weapons to the game, has you use them in one mission, and that's it. There are bunches of missions in this game where you might want to subdue enemies and bring 'em back alive. Nope. You use nonlethal, and the bad guys just lay there and you can't leave combat until you put lead in their head. This is one of a myriad of things that make me think half the team left mid-development.
@AlexAdrift

That or the team/devs are out of touch with reality. Choices like the one you mentioned feel weird and as if multiple things were left on the cutting room floor. City maps were probably removed at the last second. And powers feel like they added in the last 6 months of development. Just some things and choices are just weird.
@Exploder11

The first time I really noticed the AI acting badly is on the Scow mission. That's the first time restricted spaces really need to be enforced, and there needs to be a coordinated defense, because the guards are explicitly eager for a fight. That stands out, because in other missions or situations the hostile groups will just attack you first sight. So if these people are playing nice but want to fight, then I shouldn't have to shoot them to get into a fight, or steal in sight, I should just need to cross a line. Up to that point I took the ability to trespass as an amusing cultural quirk. But this time, the NPCs were actually saying they wanted to attack me for being where I was, but didn't think it was worth the effort or are too tired. That means the system knew I was in a place I shouldn't be, knew something should be done, and just didn't for no reason. So the problem I have with the AI is the lack of nuance. If I'm in a hostile place, the NPCs attack on sight. If I'm in a friendly place, they wait for me to attack or steal. There's no in between. Space has that in between though, because if you get caught with contraband, you can choose to talk, choose to ignore, and it gives you options to run, cooperate, or fight. Different places need different levels and styles of that on the ground. Shoot someone in Akila city, maybe no one will respond, but you will get a fat bounty and loads of Rangers on you everywhere. Do the same in New Atlantis, and it should start with a friendly request to surrender, and escalate into GTA with rising levels of response from the cops. Theft needs some nuance too, because there should be a difference between picking up an owned item, versus pocketing said item. There should be some leeway too when you pocket something, depending on where you are and what the item is. If you eject the item fast enough, not getting in trouble would be nice, or maybe you get banned from the store.

The interactions are limited in a multitude of ways, which hurts player engagements. The NCPS should be able to react to the player but simply don't unless its a crime. Compared to other titles, like RDR2, Starfield NPCS are shallow and a after thought. I like your ideas btw, would have made for better immersion and gave each world their own feeling.

I only have companions to babysitting my ship or outpost. Even fallout 4,skyrim companions weren't as bad as Starfield. Only similarly in the game's when it comes to sneaking. Fallout 4 and Skyrim companions would take off when they see enemies or creatures attacking sometimes cause problems when you didn't want it, but nonetheless, they were doing something. Starfield companions are more of a "look, I'm just here to judge you on your choices." Unique companions aren't any better but pretty much, don't judge. But leave go back to the ship or start firing on you. They leave if you kill someone innocent bystander or fire on you if you get a bounty being on the ship or outpost not being with you at time bounty occurs. My all-time favorite is when you shoot creatures with unique companions close by creature with electronic damage weapons. They turn fire on you. 🤦‍♂️

Starfield is a game that will make you give up a bunch along the way: I gave up on looting, too much, pointless; I gave up on companions: boring and annoying; I gave up on exploring: tedious and nothing to find after the first 4 planets; I gave up on mining resources: you can buy it from mercants: I gave up on researching and adding weapon mods: too laborious (and just console commanded my way through); I gave up on space battles: samey and boring after a while; I gave up on levelling up: took WAY TOO LONG (and just console commanded my way through); I gave up on some quests because they were dull (except Vanguard, that was ok); I gave up on dialog because OMG STFU! I easily skipped 50% of the game's dialog, it's almost like amateur fan fiction writing. I gave up on the main quest: nonsensical and boring, and just speed ran my way through. Eventually I gave up on the game because I softblocked myself to siding with the pirates because I accidentally told Ikande to go f himself 60 hours ago... And I cannot kill the pirates because they're unkillable. There are better games to play, like my unnecessarily heavily modded fallout 4 😂🤘 Edit: the only thing I didn't give up on was the ship builder, I love it... but yeah there's not much you can do with your ship except sleep in it, fast travel and fly in circles in either a debris field or asteroid field 😒

Equip your ship with particle beam weapons. 6 of these for best results on a single weapon slot. Range on most of these are 3000m and above You should be able to destroy at least 2 - 3 ships before they even get close. Once ships start to surround you, fly at max speed and boost at a sisngle direction. Once youlre out of the middle of the pack, use you thruster to turn ship and risnse and repeat,

Imma be straight, they can fix this with legit 2 things. Within the creatuon engine they still have something called combat classes. If they linked combat classes to packages with dynamic markers through a script (this can be done, ive done it before in new vegas with a flashbang grenade that was turned into a decoy grenade that adds a package to an npc.) They could make dodge, cover, power attack, and grenade chances be applied via package instead of how they are now. They could have npcs that lay down mines as they are retreating, they could have significant pack tactics where they can surround and keep a distance from an enemy, or they could even have one that throws smoke grenades based on the size of the lines of the navmesh triangles within their combat classes. All of this is possible if they linked the chances of a specific action to work with their AI package system. I am currently making a mod for FNV that does this very same thing (in addition to a whole cavelcade of new things and a new storyline) so it could absolutely be viable within starfield.

My companions have been very effective in combat. So I have to disagree with about half of the video. However, I am glad, despite your hilarious issue with the AI, that you think the game is a great game. In combat, if I have given my companions a good weapon and one that suits their skills, they can take out several enemies all on their own. Now they are stupid regarding self preservation and even run into your line of fire, but they take cover, will throw grenades if you equip them with some and kill enemies. Contrary to your experience, I find the Enemy AI to be very good. They will retreat if wounded, they reposition during combat which can surprise you and flank you if you lost sight of them. I play on Very Hard and have been in danger of dying tons of times. One other commenter above, andrewchung, kind of agreed with you by saying he took Andreja into a stealth situation and she messed up the stealth (yeah they do that badly) but then said Andreja also ruined it by "blasting and killing everyone." So even he had a companion that was effective. I think the game is "good" about a solid 7.5/10. Some parts are massively well done and others are sorely lacking. But it is not a masterpiece as some have said, nor is it garbage. 7.5/10. But for Bethesda game players - I would give it a 10/10 "Recommended to play." you could watch Gopher's review - he thinks the Enemy AI is excellent, as do I. Thank you for at least sharing the parts you like and dislike - not a one sided angry rant! LOL

Just wondering - do you give your companions specific weapons with ammo and then have them equip that weapon? If you give Sarah a modified Laser weapon (with ammo) and have her equip it, or Sam a powerful rifle or Andreja a particle beam weapon, they are noticeably more effective. Sometimes they kill enemies so fast I don't get an Xp from it. Important is to have them equip what you want. As for Barrett - just give him anything. He taunts the enemies mercilessly anyway so he is helpful in that way! LOL @@AlexAdrift

This has been my experience as well. In many cases Istruggle to kill enemies before my companions and miss out on experience lol. I ALWAYS give them better weapons though. After watching the whole video, I'm starting to think there are some platform or hardware dependant bugs that might affect AI as well. I simply don't see the level of enemy and companion incompetence that was shown in the video. The fact that a lot of the criticism was directed towards enemies freezing mid combat or getting contused really smells like there might be some bugs, or maybe the AI thread is getting hung sometimes.

When they talk the animation looks like a Wallace and Gromit short. And the single camera shot of everyone standing still facing you with those dead RealDoll eyes is like cinematography from a Wes Anderson film. I think the reason people look so similar, is because the character creator is worse, which only proves your first point further. This has been a trend with their games for years now. In their attempts to make the games more accessible, they have stripped, altered, or completely removed features. Have some things improved? Of course, yet in my opinion, other things have taken a clear step back. Uniqueness in choice and items is rare or outright gone, companions are limited and shallow, companion commands are gone, settlements are worse in some regards, combat has less enemy variation, scrap has once again became useless, clothing has been simplified, character creator is worse, the worlds aren't as fun to explore, melee builds and melee weapons feel like afterthoughts, perks that feel mandatory, terrible level up system, odd level scaling, horrid replay value, and "Space Dragon Shouts 2.0" which are more tedious and annoying compared to a game from 2011. Again, somethings have improved, but somethings have became worse with every new release or recycled idea.

Extremely useful to have in combat, great amount of commentary, etc. And the AI overhauls used to make enemies fight better is nothing ground breaking, but it certainly helps quite a lot. I also LOVE summons in skyrim se. And your followers also summoning. Its like having a small army. Was hoping a similar thing with starfield, but sadly this isn't the case. @SapphirosCZ
@SapphirosCZ Жыл бұрын
The Radiant AI technology, as it evolved in its iteration developed for Skyrim, comprises two parts: Radiant AI The Radiant AI system deals with NPC interactions and behavior. It allows non-player characters to dynamically react to and interact with the world around them. General goals, such as "Eat in this location at 2pm" are given to NPCs, and NPCs are left to determine how to achieve them.The absence of individual scripting for each character allows for the construction of a world on a much larger scale than other games had developed, and aids in the creation of what Todd Howard described as an "organic feel" for the game. Radiant Story The Radiant Story system deals with how the game itself reacts to the player behavior, such as the creation of new dynamic quests. Dynamically generated quests are placed by the game in locations the player hasn't visited yet and are related to earlier adventures

I believe that, just like the weather and illness in game were tone down to meaninless, the AI also was made way too dumb overall. No idea why the devs decided to make it so easy overall, but that's the kind of thing I Hope can be highly improved in a 'survival mode' like Skyrim and Fallout. With mods, I'm Sure we will get a 'smart AI' mod or something to improve on that, but I do hope Bethesda listen and add the possibility of making the AI harder to fight and smarter. Maybe I'm hoping for way too much, but I would LOVE to see a similar mod to Skyrim AI with ChatGTP, with Microsoft now owning Bethesda and having their own 'smart AI', idk, I don't think it would/could/should be impossible for Bethesda to add at least one, but hopefully more companions with similar characteristcs as the mod in Skyrim, I mean, if ultra small teams, and some times a Single person, can add that to Skyrim, I think a Big companie can add the feature to a game that, not only is supossed to be around for at least 10 years and have plans 5 years advance, but also Just got released And they said they're listening to the community in order to possible add more features we may ask if it is possible. To me, fells like 99% of all games released are in a 'late beta' form or something, while the game is finished in the coming years, BG3 was one of the few that got released in a state I think it's Actually finished. Personally, I can't see how to improve BG3 when we talk about gameplay, lore, etc, while Starfield and many others we Can see where to improve, and to me That's the Big diference. Starfield was a big let down, not because it was over hyped but because it just plain sucks. Too many bugs, and saying "the AI is stupid" is an understatement. I don't play it anymore.

Idk what game yall be playing set on very hard & not im the extremely low level safe areas, fuck around & do some Ranger bounties where the enemies all 40-75 with mag weapons & particle weapons with dot damage & u getting dusted off quickly if u not using cover while they all take bullets into their hacked shield we cant use or obtain 😂 The ai may be dumb but on VH they will fuck u & your companion up immediately. Im in the best armor in the game & vs VH enemies with mag weapons have been kills in a second from full hp to 0 & in like level 78.
