It works well on XSX without mods though. Some glitches and crashes but I've only had a handful and I've been playing a lot. This has been one of my major gripes with bethesda games, there is no consequences of your actions reflected on the world. Take Skyrim, the Nord's are racist to dark elves and argonians, but even if you play either one of those races, they will still treat you like your just another Nord. In Fallout 4 your roped into the minuteman, you can not say no, you can ignore them, but not say no. In older games like the original fallout games, you could do whatever you wanted, even if it meant your game was doomed to failure by killing some vital npc, you could do it. Yet in these games the world rarely reacts to what you do in them. Now i still enjoy playing these games most of the time, and i actually liked Starfield for what it provided, but it was still much of the same stuff we have seen before. In the end though, it just mindless entertainment, and not oscar worthy epic games that definitely are Game of the Year good, its actually just your average 6/10 game like many others.

I'd suggest even skipping it until some good dlc and mods get released for it. Fallout 4 Vanilla was Meh, but Automatron, Far Harbor, and Nuka World dlc packs greatly enhanced the game. The Creation Club pack by Bethesda and the awesome mods transformed the game. I'm hoping Starfield can be the same, but I won't hold my breath. There is no management to really be done there like you would in a normal adventure or survival game, because the majority of your inventory is taken up by materials that you could use in like 100+ recipes that you don't know by heart. All materials are valuable because you could never understand their value enough to determine what can be thrown away and what can be kept. Along with that, inv cap is always so fucking low that it makes me never want to engage with that system at all. Why bother having to run to put away the things I don't need if I'm going to have to do it every few minutes with looting. Starfield's story would have been so much cooler if it actually took place during the colony war. You could still have the subplot of discovering the artifacts and becoming the dragonborn 2.0, but perhaps you could use your powers to aid a certain faction and give them a technological edge against the rest. I can't believe Bethesda dropped the ball this hard. They had all the potential in the world to make a cool story with similar beats to New Vegas and they just didn't
@Lakstoties Жыл бұрын
Playing during that time period alone would have made even every day space travel interesting. If you have an active conflict going on, you have to mindful of who is claiming the system at the moment. Imagine being a favored of one faction, jumping into the system, and finding out... Uh oh, the opposing side is currently holding the system. Couple this with even a basic reputation system, you've got yourself a real dilemma. If you are not quite known, you can likely slip on by. If you are pretty well known by one side, you might have to do some quick talking to convince these guys you are either not that guy or not worth it. You could even have a system of spoofing fake ship IDs, that you have to be mindful of not altering your ship too much from. Just a little effort opens up so much more for the game.

@@MorganSaph It very clearly is not... Essential NPCs are a 'modern' accessibility feature to prevent players from effing up and ruining quests caused by their own mistakes. Accessibility and holding the players hand are modern concepts and Bethesda's biggest problem. They try and make their games as casual and accessible as possible which ruins what people look for in their games. Sure, better RPGs like BG3 will give you altering paths depending on which NPCs die or not, but that isn't 'modern' that's a lot of extra work which we can't 'expect', but simply appreciate when it is given to us. Games used to be less forgiving and so essential NPCs were not necessary in RPG games. Some games, like Fromsofts have always allowed you to kill off quest NPCs and still do. One cool thing about Fallout: New Vegas regarding murdering rival faction members is that even if you murder Legionnaires near the start of a playthrough, a spy will approach you after you confront Benny in the Tops Casino. He tells you that Ceasar has pardoned you for your crimes against the Legion because of your influence in the area and that he would like to meet you in person to discuss business. Of course, you may choose to murder the spy, or any other of Ceasar's Legionnaires and have your pardon revoked. Very competent game design, leaving no plot holes to be found. Not to say New Vegas has no plot holes, but this was a great way to introduce you to a character that otherwise may not have been accessible depending on your actions at the start of the game.

I agree for the most part, BUT, in terms of that example I disagree. The actual Caesar pardoned many of his enemies from the civil war, no matter how much they despised him. Fallout NV’s Caesar is a mimic, so of course he would attempt to copy the originals view on certain enemies. By that point in NV’s story, you’re not famous by any means but you have made somewhat of a name for yourself. I could see Caesar sensing that you’d have a semi-important role to play, and since you’re not the leader of the NCR or any rival, he might as well pardon you regardless of what you’ve done to him since you could end up helping him. My point is, NV’s Caesar is a bad example because he’s trying to mimic the original Caesar. If he was any other faction leader who actually thought independently, that probably wouldn’t have been the case. Great attention to detail on Obsidians part, but not a good point of reference for other games with characters who think independently.

I think the thing I hated most about Starfield was the persuasion system. New Vegas was the gold standard for that. Skill not high enough? You get unique dialogue, skill high enough, you pass with a line that makes sense. Intelligence super low? You might get a dummy response that works in your favor. Any of your other stats that might pertain to the conversation high, you may get unique dialogue for that that furthers your goal. In Starfield it's just: "Hey, lady, give me the key to that safe you're guarding." Lady: "Why would I do that?" *Persuasion starts* "Who's gonna know you helped me?" Lady: "Need to think about it..." "Are we going to have a problem?" Lady: "I surely hope not..." "C'mon, just hand it over, it'll be fine." Lady: "Need to think about it... Okay, fine, take it. Now get out of here." Lazy af writing.

Starfield is just another data point on my ongoing observation: The "Bethesda Effect". Each subsequent game that Bethesda themselves creates retains 80% of the quality of the prior, and this compounds based on the chronological order. So far, this explains why a lot of the ancient gamers look upon Starfield and cringe, but many newer gamers aren't that harsh on it. It's a matter of personal perspective, and many only notice something is off when the the comparison gets stark. So, for someone that really got into Bethesda at Morrowind, it's five jumps from Starfield (New Vegas is Obsidian and Fallout 76... yeah): (80%)^5 = 33% relative quality. For someone that got into Bethesda at Fallout 4, its only one jump: (80%)^1 = 80% relative quality. Hence, those that go into Bethesda at Fallout 4, aren't going to notice anything too terribly off. Skyrim folks are going to get that uneasy feeling. Fallout 3 and beyond? Yeah, you KNOW something is just WRONG these days. But, just an observation on my part. I've put plenty of hours into Starfield, because I knew if I stopped... I probably never pick it back up again. For a game about adventure and exploration, there's nothing adventurous about it's design and no exploration of new gameplay. So many places to go, but no where I want to be.

You might get a random but it’s a roll of a dice after a loading screen. Also fast traveling to orbit a planet to drop into what is effectively a box on the planet is not exploration. I also don’t understand why they put all that dev time into making really fleshed out ships with massive customization only to have you play space invaders in small sections of space. Hate Serana, Lyonshood, Delphine, Preston? Nope, you're forced to either work with them, or ignore them. Like Miraak, Harkon, or Kellogg? Too bad, you'll hate them and like it. How about getting to actually interact with the vast majority of supposedly intelligent enemies, like raiders, bandits, dragon priests, super mutants, or robobrains? the Indiana Jones ride was the perfect analogy for Bethesda magic. Originally the ride had three parallel tracks, split into chambers that were sectioned off so you would randomly change paths resulting in a new experience every time you rode. However, the maintenance and upkeep for the ride was cost prohibitive so they shut down the alternative paths and threw in a fancy light display that would change colors and give the illusion of change. Actually, Bethesda's situation is very interesting, because there's literally a passage in the bible with the same scene. It's called "The Pool of Bethesda" in the Book of John, 5 ver. 1. In Jerusalem, there was a fountain called Bethesda, that an angel would come down at a certain time into the pool to stir up the water. Millions and millions of people that were sick, paralyzed, lame, and blind would wait for the stirring of the water, and whoever stepped in first, would be healed of whatever disease they had. The fountain of course, now has long since dried up, and no longer provide healing. It seems the same happened with "Bethesda" softworks as well, where they used to provide healing for people, and be profitable and blessed, however the Bethesda 'fountain' has run dry, and no longer provide any meaningful games or content. :O

I was genuinely surprised that the mechanics that carried over from fallout 4 were scaled back so heavily if not outright removed as opposed to improved and expanded. Bethesda seems to really enjoy watering down the mechanics of their games, the quality of their writing, and sanding down any kind of edge. They make mature games but they consistently become more prude with their portrayals of violence, sex, substance use, evil morality, assault, etc. I find those elements are essential to add a serious tone, an immersion of reality, and stakes for the storytelling. It’s like the writers think we’re children. I know kids play mature games but they’re not supposed too, that’s a parental negligence problem. We shouldn’t have this bland milk toast bubble wrap game design because of that. I still enjoy starfield but damn if I’m not incredibly underwhelmed by what went into it. What an unproductive 8 years, a near decade to give us something that has less variety, more restrictions, and less substance than the previous game. Bethesda for the love of god please just push yourselves to make something that’s above and beyond, it’s so frustrating seeing the potential in things like Skyrim and fallout 4 despite their flaws and hoping they learn to evolve the good stuff and snuff the bad stuff only to see them do the opposite more often than not.
@TrangleC Жыл бұрын
And Fallout 4 was already a step back from Skyrim. You could play Skyrim as a pretty decent Stealth game, with the "slitting throats" mechanic and then they just dropped that and copy and pasted Fallout 3 into Fallout 4, where you could only stealth-kill sleeping enemies and all you could do with awake ones was slipping a grenade into their pockets during pickpocketing. It was ridiculous and so revealing to how Fallout 4 was really just a copy and paste job from Fallout 3. I think they even just lifted whole quest lines from one episode to the next, like the one where you had to save a radio DJ from being imprisoned by Super Mutants in a sky scraper.

My biggest gripe with BGS as a studio is that they have steadily drifted further and further away from trusting that [The Player] can cope with the consequences of their choices. It's why every single player-character in Starfield is exactly the same, the only difference being the order in which you choose your perks. It's why half the NPCs in the game are unkillable and why the other half are completely unnecessary set dressing. And it's why you can join all factions all the time as long as you swing by a handy kiosk that lets you pay your bounty to reset your nonexistent faction reputation.

But the inside was empty, there was nothing to interact with, no objects on tables, nothing could be moved, touched or dropped and every interior looked the same with the same baskets in the corners; it was all just background - it wasn't a real world with real objects just a matte painting effect world. A city, with only a few buildings you could enter, copy and paste NPCs that looked the same, wore the same clothes, and stood next to each other just to break the immersion further. If that is how you prefer your games, largely just cut scene movies where the characters act out the story for you, in a dead empty world, you have zero impact on (you can't even drop items) fine, but don't pretend they are the same as a Bethesda game. It is completely different world building.
@sadpee7710 Жыл бұрын
@@paul22180 bruh what an unhinged comment. hate to break it to you but starfield isn't a real world with real objects either, all games are just an illusion. that's what immersion IS. also did you just call witcher 3 a cutscene??? i'm getting a strong sense you haven't played it. they are very different games and of course i concede that starfield has more objects, which makes sense for that game. however judging games based on the amount of phyisics objects is just strange? not a legitimate way to judge how good or immersive something is. witcher 3 spaces are filled with fires that can be extinguish or lit. your igni sign will set foliage, the ground and enemies on fire. your aard sign *will send physics objects flying, including bricks and door or anything breakable.* as well as put fires out. it may even deflect arrows. beyond that door don't just lead you to nowhere? all stores are interior space you can enter, ask store owners about stuff. sometimes there are backrooms for storage. grind stones to sharpen your sword. whole apartments and mansions are dense with objects and loot or hidden pathways and multiple floors. taverns are big and unique, some have huge basements where fights take place or upper floors for prostitution. there is at least one bookstore that functions as a pseudo library with an upper floor for reading. the witches orphanage has a play area outside, long tables for eating inside and an the ominous cursed basement, going through all three is seamless, you just walk in. *fights taking place in villages, such as the one where a gang attacks led by a werewolf, will use these interior spaces. you can go inside to take cover from arrows, fights with bandits or monster can drag into villages or cities and cause others to join the fight because it's all one seamless space not separated by loading screens.* to explore a cave or dungeon you... walk into it. it's not a loading screen it's part of the same world. these often have unique encounters or quests. like the cheese cave or the harpy cave. *some interior spaces are even underwater, you can just jump into any lake and find sunken ships to swim through and loot, or smugglers caches hidden underwater.* you can enter all the homes of minor villages, in superstitious and poor regions there will be altars of prayer. you can tell where the kids sleep, where they eat etc. burnt down or abandoned homes will be filled with children's toys and broken items to loot. there will be pens with animals around some houses. you can cast signs to befriend them.
@paul22180 Жыл бұрын
@@sadpee7710 I have played the Witcher 3, and all the DLC for it; which is why I know how the game world works. Most interactions in the Witcher 3 are cutscenes. They are very different games, with different worlds, one very superficial, one not. It isn't just physics, it is gameplay, camera (third person only isn't very immersive) and footprint. You can put out fires and candles, blow books around (one or two), but when you come back to that area, they're back in place. You have no impact on the world, which is immersion breaking. Those places aren't densley packed, you cannot pick up the objects, or interact or manipulate them. They're just background. It is one seamless space because it is empty, it has to be as your PC/Console has finite resources; so to mitigate this the world is full of empty huts, empty caves and spartan interiors. Cities and villages are full of empty boxes you cannot enter, in place of houses. Most of the action takes place outside for that reason. The dungeons are empty, sewers are empty, just enemies an occasional box and that is all. The loading screens allow the loading of more assets, more resources and more world building. You enter a dungeon not knowing what you're going to find, in the Witcher 3 you know, as you have already seen all there is to offer; they are all the same. Most of the loot is already in baskets, or boxes or other stuff, it isn't actually in game. You can barely go anywhere in villages but you have to guess where they sleep etc, as they are seldom, if ever in those places, actually living, cooking eating or doing anything meaningful, they just wander around. All the homes feel abandoned.

@@paul22180 my god you are so wrong. how can you keep insisting all interiors are "empty" and not dense, i just discussed how densly packed every interior is with details and world building. it's as if your definition of "dense" or "immersive" is based on how many physics props you get to play with. and having decorative objects is immersion breaking somehow??? hate to break it to you again but starfield is filled with decorative objects. useless props that only exist for flavor. miscellaneous objects and junk. yes you can carry them around for a fat payday when you go to sell or maybe use some of it for crafting but hate to break it to you again *THAT GOES FOR THE WITCHER 3 AS WELL. the game has a fairly expansive crafting system; loot oysters on the beach and you can put it in the crafting window to get a pearl, worth more money. spoons, cutlery can be dismantled for iron. gems can be broken down for dust to use in alchemy. broken rakes and other items can be turned into timber or sticks, you can also get fibres and leather. you upgrade and create gear, make consumables and ammunition.* also claiming that the third person camera isn't immersive is extremely odd. more than almost any other RPG *YOU ARE A PRE-WRITTEN CHARACTER.* you are not a player stand-in blank slate. you are geralt. all decisions are things he would consider doing, the gameplay reinforces his character and way of living. *you talk like him, hunt like him, move like him and look like him and this is in fact the main point of the game. seeing him is important for immersion. the animations of his swings, the way he walks, it all serves to reinforce the character and express who the player is, allow them to soak in his character and "become geralt" in a sense. it's insane how wrong you are* furthermore, wym no impact on the world? that's like one of the main features. places and character will be different depending on your choices. places may become desolate, the number of guards or religious fanatics may increase. dialogue and decoration will change, events will happen in response many of which affect future quests. not just in a single village but an entire nation. *areas will be re-settled by people when you clear them out of danger.* yes this is quest or side task impact on the world but that goes for starfield too. at the same time, witcher 3 doesn't always even communicate to you when you're making a choice. this goes for the entire series, stuff can come up later in the game for things you did not realize was a contextual decision making scene. quests will go differently if you do things out of order or have already finished part of the content before taking the quest. *meanwhile in starfield, going to the eye or whatever and trying to enter before the assault on constallation will give you radio blur and the game will prevent you from entering. the game literally isn't ready for you to be there yet because there has to be a forced decision right after where you lament that you couldn't save your friends in the eye. there's more examples. like the space station stuck in an endless battle between crew and pirate that you can enter at the start of the game. you can't do anything there. then when you're directed there for a quest and you return with sarah she will act like it's your first time there. because unlike the witcher 3 the world and story doesn't react to your actions.* also tf you mean you have to guess where they sleep and they don't do anything, did we even play the same game??? the children literally have smaller beds in a different room in most villages. are you just making stuff up? people are plucking chickens, blacksmiths are working and you may have to wait for them to finish before you can make an order; NPCs will take cover from the rain, they carry out rituals that are culturally unique to their settlement, especially in skellige; widows are crying by battlefields or by a hangman's tree. *THERE ARE HUNTERS AND/OR SCOIA'TAEL IN THE WOODS HUNTING ANIMALS FFS AND THEY WILL HELP YOU IF YOU GET INTO A MONSTER FIGHT.* also by cutscene do you just mean the camera locking in place for dialogue? that's a massive part of starfield as well -_- believe it or not dialogue is important for roleplaying games.

A major disappointment for me is the lack of alien races. Like, it's a game set in space, from a developer notable for a series where you can pick from different races. But then, you're only stuck with a potato-faced human. Back when there was only vague info about Starfield, I was most curious about alien races, only to find out there are none. I've watched a few Starfield critique videos but yours was the one that resonated with my own experience the most. I like how you emphasize that you had fun and that there is a lot to enjoy, but that the thin veneer of magic gets stripped away much more brutally than past Bethesda games. Eventually I just couldn't stop seeing things about it that there was just no excuse for being that bland and lacking. In every corner of the game's design I can find something that disappoints me. Once I reached the point where I started noticing this the game started slowly dying for me. I don't normally get worn down like this by Bethesda games. Sure I got 40-50 hours out of it before this happened but I normally get well over 100 hours out of a Bethesda game before there's even a hint of it wearing me down. And even then I can keep coming back after taking breaks from it. But I just feel nothing anymore from Starfield. It's just so profoundly bland. I cannot for the life of me understand why the company that made such charming worlds in the past decided on making one with so little personality. Bethesda might have gotten a little too high on their own supply.

I was actually hyped for the main story. The possibilities in my mind were endless. what did the artifacts do? Who made them? Why did they make them? Then I met the starborn. I thought the ships were cool and i was still hooked. Are these the creators of the artifacts? Where did they come from? Turns out its just humans who did NG+, That's it. In my opinion it was the biggest let down I've ever experienced in a games story. I'm not exaggerating that the moment the starborn were revealed to be Sarah and Stroud I lost all interest in that moment. The story died right then and there. I knew that the ending was just NG+ and not an ending at all, just a big circle. The only good Questline is the UC vanguard and right behind it is the Freestar Collective. but the writing was meh in all of it. This game is probably the biggest let down of all time. I will fully admit, I tried my best to really enjoy Starfield. I REALLY tried. I just couldn't because it felt like I was being handheld throughout the entire game, and then put on a short leash everytime I tried to play the way I enjoy. Is it so much to ask that a game lets me make a bad decision? Like a legitimate, terrible decision that has consequences? Whether that's letting me be a bad person, or making people hate me? It doesn't have to be a massive world-changing event when I go rogue, but man you have to actually try to make me feel like I'm actually a factor in your world. I personally like playing as a petty thief in RPG games, a generally nice guy who only really steals minor things, like small bits of money or food. A reformed burglar if you will with his friends, who limits himself but can't help his sticky fingers. I'm a hoarder as well, what can I say, I might need that 500th packet of rice and that two dollars under the bed. Yet every time I tried doing that I was bitched at every five seconds, constantly reprimanded for doing something so abysmal. My Companion disowned me for swiping someone's sandwich, like, are you serious? Fine then, go ahead and stop following me since apparently everyone in this universe is a goody two shoes who literally licks everyone's boots clean when they ask. What if I wanted to be a bit more neutral? Not even evil, just ... a little selfish and wary, you know, like a regular person. I can't even be a little mischievous in an RPG. I can't sass people, I can't be violent, I can't even act like a total psychopath when I get bored to see how long I can survive before I get put down like the rabid dog I am. I thought the whole point of RPG games was to see what I could actually do, what I could get away with, seeing my actions have a realistic reaction as I explore a world. You know, experimentation and nuance to help me enjoy the world you're talking about, like a game of D&D. How is Starfield even considered to be an RPG when it CONSTANTLY shoves the railroad you're supposed to be on down your throat? Why is this game acting like there's any form of replayability when it's all bogus like Fallout 4 and it's fake varied dialogue options that lead to the exact same results? Please dear god just give me a moped or something so I'm not hoofing it across every area in complete silence, or take the Fallout: New Vegas route and let me listen to some sweet tunes as I'm exploring. Its kind of why whenever i see a game bragging about `open world`, one of my immediate thinking processes is how much you can actually do in the game that takes advantage of said open world. Not just simply walking around a giant map but having ways to creatively traverse or even build permanent(or ones that dont despawn soon as you walk far away from it) structures. Death Stranding actually does a creative way to handle things disappearing by making a durability system of sorts and even goes the extra mile to have other people`s stuff appear in your world, which is the ULTIMATE solutions to open world design, having the open world not simply be just you populating it, but because others are doing the same, its a better step above procedurally generated `ruins`. If it wasnt for the major amounts of backlog i got to clean thru, if i were to see death stranding on discount on PSN & i got months of time on hand, i would likely pick that up and enjoy looking up people figuring out ways to create `transport launchers` to catapult vehicles or make-shift storage containers across dozens of miles to nearby towns and even line it up to land in a nearby lake to avoid fall damage. When a game allows that kind of creaviity and they dont pull crap like having the structures vanish if you just get a `short distance away` or make it impossible to `save` the build designs in some manner, then it becomes a bummer. Hell, im more likely to go play Fallout 4 then any of these new betheseda titles, because i barely got much progress in that game when i had it for PS plus years ago, but i enjoyed the fk outta scrapping as much stuff around your ruined home town and decking it out with 2 floor high structures to have a effective storage area & shopping mall as i brought in more settlers. Its just pure fantastic fun when you can turn a regular old destroyed town into a fortress city of sorts. Knowing that Starfield cant let me make some giant arse highway between multiple locations to plop some kind of vehicle construction platform to `speed` travel a nice flat road but instead have to do bunny hops across kilometers of barren land is just annoying. Hell, even Mass effect (2?) i believe, did a better job with going thru giant barren scapes by having a large vehicle you would use for not only traveling the place but have a secondary feature for scanning for resources.
