Put my rifle away and stood there for a minute thinking about what I almost did. A minute later, the pilot, from within his seat, facing away from me says "WHO'S THERE" and starts up the ship. We get flying, I'm still just standing there behind him, looking out the front window. When a bunch of UC or Constellation ships just shoot us the fuck down. As someone who was just expecting Fallout in Space I got into it immediately. Because that's basically what I wanted. To me what I saw of the game during some of the marketing was just a more grounded version of Obsidian's Outer Worlds. Both have the mega corps and space cowboys just Starfield just has more grounded sci-fi over the goofy space dramedy that was Outer World. So going into it with the expectations of Outer Worlds with a bigger budget and more realism made the game meet my expectations. Also the first ship does just feel like a fast travel mechanic but once you start building custom ships and getting attached to the work you've done the ships go from being small fast travel ships to giant Starships that act as your main home. The houses in game are your secondary homes. Your ship is your real home.

It took me roughly 10-12 hours as well - I think to get my head around how the game 'works' compared to their other games, and also to reconcile the cognitive dissonance I had about what I thought the game was, versus what it actually is. Once I got over that hump, I became obsessed with the game. The discourse around it since review codes first went out and footage began emerging into the wild has been insane, however.

The disconnect between what miserable KZbin fudds are claiming and what Steam reviews actually have been (between 70-80% approval) has been interesting to say the least. I personally enjoy Starfield very much - even dropping my playthrough of GTA IV - because I didn't really know what I would expect. People kept claiming "Skyrim in space" (because that's what Todd said), but it really isn't. Starfield is the culmination of everything Bethesda has done up to this point. It's a refinement of all they've done, and while it still has its issues (based on how large the game actually is, it's to be expected), I'm enjoying what the game has to offer.

While yes, it is a Bethesda game through and through, there's something so uniquely *open* about it. When I picked up an audio log made by the leader of the big pirate faction, the first thought I had was that the character was physically OUT THERE somewhere, and maybe I'll meet them one day, or maybe I'll never hear of them again. A few moments later, I saw a movie poster touting "the true story of the battle of Niira" and again I thought, okay, Niira is a place in this universe, and I could go there right now. Similar things happen in Fallout and TES, but in Starfield when you hear the equivalent of a Whiterun guard talking about Hammerfell, you know that there's no map boundary stopping you from seeing it yourself. Losing the seamlessness of something like No Man's Sky in order to get that kind of magic is more than a fair trade, IMO.

This is a really good point! I’ve binged the hell out of NMS and Star Citizen but I’ve been hesitant to buy Starfield because I was worried that the exploration wouldn’t be as fulfilling. But, that being said, I do think that the stories and RPG playability in the other games are quite abysmal. There are still stories and places you can visit, but the depth isn’t there. It looks deep but is very shallow. I recently started Skyrim for the first time and I’m loving the RPG aspect of the game. It’s the first game in a long time where I actually watch cut scenes and pay attention to dialogue because I feel like all of it has an impact on the world in the game. Assuming Starfield feels the same, it’s a no brainer to buy it! I will miss the open feeling of Skyrim-not having to fast travel everywhere (I play survival so I have never fast traveled). I definitely wasn't expecting everyone to feel the same as I did about Starfield (we're all allowed to have our own differing opinions on pieces of media), but just seeing an overwhelming amount of people on the internet being generally down on the game made me sad because it felt as if my tastes were wrong or stupid. If it were just internet randoms it would be one thing, but it also came from people who carry a lot of weight in the gaming community, some of those are people I respect and listen to. Don't worry, you're not alone. I love this game, too. A lot of the hate for this game comes from rage bait KZbinrs/Twitch streamers like Asmongolde and Dunkey, who get extra clicks by hating on Bethesda games. People love to hate on Bethesda. Now not everyone who dislikes the game is doing it for clicks, but there's no doubt that negativity for games that aren't universally regarded as perfect sells, doubly so if it's a Bethesda game. That's why a lot of the hate comments you seem from ppl on the internet is disingenuous and vague, like "nothing but empty planets," "terrible writing/side quests," or "loading screen simulator." There are still people who like the game, tho. Reputable KZbinrs/reviewers like ACG, Mortismal Gaming, LegacyKillaHD, Fextralife, Jayvee, David Jaffe (creator of God of War), Gene Park, Kinda Funny Games, etc. No matter what the Internet may pretend, the game is objectively not a disaster. If it was, it wouldn't have gotten an 80+ Metacritic. Truth of the matter is, the game isn't perfect but it's still a quality game. Some ppl won't like it, some people will. Simple as that.

The main story, while some may call it weak, is probably the best I've seen in a Bethesda game as far as how it serves the rest of the game. Bethesda games aren't really about the main plot. Skyrim and Fallout 4 had massive issues where the main story had a built in time pressure when you are just trying to explore. The mystery of the artifacts in starfield is just interesting enough so you will progress the main quest once in a while but it doesn't feel like it's the top priority.

I mean, common, loading screens every time I enter my ship, a Building, a spacestation, a new orbit, a new whatever?! The even have some airpreassure doors in some areas, that hide the loading of new places, so it would definitlx be possible, just like minimaps, or spacetravel in a more emersive way. Its not terrible that they left out these things, but just simply sad. Especially because these things are normal in modern games, and most of gamers are usef to these things and cant overlook them. Its the same with police systems in open worlds since gta5. Every game needs it or people will complane, because they are used to that luxury feature.

@@xerlmxI think one of the biggest differences in previous Bethesda games that separated them apart was the fact that you could also just technically leave behind dozens, if not hundreds of physical objects in a spot and they technically wouldn’t despawn. You can try it in other open worlds e.g shooting a hundred web shooters at a roof of a hundred floor building in Spiderman and the game would eventually despawn it. Night City would also have the same goons eventually spawn in the exact same spot if you give it enough time to revisit the area. Bethesda games would also have to account for individual NPCs in previous games like Fallout 3-4 where you could see them having some level of autonomy e.g actually going to bed during night etc. Played 60 hours of Starfield so far and Idk how much that the autonomous part actually happens in SF though.

I’m genuinely enjoying this game. I’m having a lot of fun exploring, completing quests, and having that action packed space adventure. I compared this game a little to no man sky at first but then I realized it is it’s own game and it’s different. I like that. Then again I didn’t watch any trailers leading up to it so I was in the dark on a lot of stuff. Regardless, it’s fun!

While I agree with the Internet, that the game would’ve been better/ more immersive if it had more space sim aspects and was a more cohesive experience. I’m also enjoying the gameplay, narrative, side quests, and random encounters quite a lot. If you view the game for what is it, and not for what it’s… not, it’s pretty fun.

I have played Elite Dangerous, and if Starfield had a similar space travel system, with no fast travel, most casual players would get bored immediately and stop playing. In a game like Starfield, where you have to go to from specific planet to specific planet a lot, it would take forever. So most people complaining that you can fast travel in space, would stop playing if you could not. What I would like, though, is to disable fast travel (maybe only on higher difficulty) if you need to go from on-foot to using your ship. So basically you can fast travel between places on a planet, since you don't use your ship, but you can't fast travel to another planet. Then, when you are on a ship, you can only fast travel AS your ship. You will always end up sitting in your ship when you fast travelled while in your ship. I think this would be a good middle ground for people that enjoy immersion.

I've currently put in about 45 hours and only done 2 story line quests. It's safe to say I enjoy the gameplay a lot. I really don't get what some people expected with the open word vs story telling aspect. I went in without setting any real expectations, and minus a few (non game breaking) bugs, I enjoy it a lot. I can already feel that this game is going to take over my life for the upcoming years

They expected to be able to explode a planet, and you know, actually find something worth a damn instead of some copper and iron for the 1 millionth time. I'm having fun too but you can't deny that you can't explore in this game like a normal bgs game or any open world rpg for that matter. 99% of the planets aren't worth going to unless you want resources or want to build a base on it. The only thing on them is a few random points of interest that repeat over and over. It's not really worth going anywhere unless there's a quest sending you there.

I don't understand what people were basing their expectations on. I went in blind, thinking it would be Fallout 4 in space and without molesting everything good about Fallout. What I got surpassed that. The first time I boarded a ship I was like "wait how did they do that." Starfield is to Bethsoft what Mass Effect was to Bioware and Outer Worlds was to Obsidian. I didn't expect those games to be Elite, they're RPGs in early post-frontier space in the style of those studios other games. And that's what Starfield is. It's like BSGs greatest hits. It's awesome.
