Starfield: Why Going Through the Unity is a Horrible thing to do

I know the gamer crowd trends towards loners with few family connections, but the idea of abandoning everything you know for a chance to see another universe is really an edge case for most people. The fact that everyone you know seems to be pushing you towards this makes it clear that either the story team thought this was a no-brainer, or they realized it was fraught with moral implications, and did everything they could to sweep them under the rug.
These are my thoughts, such as they are, on why my character wouldn't go through the Unity, at least not without a lot more preparation, and better reasons than, "it sounds like a cool thing to do." I apologize that my ADHD got the better of me a couple of times and I left thoughts unfinished.

If you have skill points in persuasion, you can persuade both the Hunter and the Emissary to give up their pursuit for the Armillary and in doing so, you end up with a peaceful Universe. After NG+10, there is no more need to pursue artifacts, so you get to enjoy that Universe and 100% all the achievements.

"There's going to be someone who argues with you." Yes! One thing I've noticed about this game is it tries to push you in one direction. For instance, various conversations have come up throughout my game play about science vs religion. I chose the religious side of the debates and every single companion I have always "disliked that". Even andreja who is in a religious cult for crying g out loud. And the terror morph storyline (WARNING: DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE TERRORMORPH STORY AND DONT WANT THE STORY SPOiLED) I chose to use the alien creature to naturally control the terror morph population and even though there were some companions who agreed that was better than using a virus to kill them, after I made the choice, I felt berated for my choice by every companion and the few who agreed with my decision had nothing to say to encourage or back me up. Sarah really berated me for not choosing the virus. The game just grabs your hand and kinda passive-aggressivley pushes you to choose specific choices and berates you for did if you don't choose it.

The thing about going through the Unity is that, functionally, it's basically a reset button for the game state. The "alternate universes" are really just the same universe with the time dialed back to the moment you picked up your first artifact. The problem I have with the game mechanic as it exists now isn't that you lose out on everything you built in your first playthrough, as getting that all back isn't all that hard unless you have Alzheimers, it's that the subsequent alternate universes don't actually significantly change anything up. And I'm not just talking about token variations in the population of Constellation, I'm talking about the actual sidequests not having significant Starborn-specific variations. Starborn foreknowledge doesn't actually amount to much when you still have to hold onto an idiot ball for the majority of the questlines versus being able to completely upend them by calling out the instigators on their bullshit at the beginning. Or, for that matter, the questlines not having any Starborn-specific variation at all where your foreknowledge ends up not being all that reliable. Say, a UC Vanguard questline where Francois Sanon actually did get executed by the UC, so the perp of the Terrormorph attacks is someone entirely different and you have a harder go of things because he's not sitting in an overglorified fish tank handing you the answers as fetch quests. Or a Freestar Ranger questline where Ron Hope isn't the mastermind (but, say, Birgit is instead). Y'know, for alternate universes to actually be alternate universes as opposed to a game state reset button.

Great points, and these could be things added in later by DLC if Bethesda wanted to. The number of alternate universes could be part of how the game grows over time.

@@rosesareredbutzerglingssti9290 Bethesda adding the alternate universe new game plus feature is very innovative… because its a clever way to get people to play differently every play through. @@b3at2 This "multiverse" BS isn't "innovative" in any way. Bugthesda is only using that crap because it's a "trend". Doing the very same quests/missions over and over again while the few differences being a few new dialogues and a new set of (very crap looking) armor and the same ship each time? No, thanks! If Bugthesda really wanted to innovate, they could have done each multiverse look and feel different each gameplay -- for example, a universe where the House Va'ruun won the Serpent's Crusade and now rules the Settled Systems with an iron fist, with an evil and fanatical version of Andreja as one of its leaders and Constelation being a group of freedom fighters. *_That_* would look and feel innovative. The really messed up thing about sona, she doesn't even get offered to go to the unity...if anyone would benefit from the unity, it would be her...she lost her parents for crying out loud. I agree. I did rush the main quest due trying to avoid spoilers. But now I get thru the main quest fairly early, usually around lvl 30ish, but I don't go thru the Unity. I turn back. I just got into a romance, I sure don't want to leave them behind. And I still have a lot of things to do, lots of missions. quests, and planet exploration. I don't even care about all the powers. I do like a couple of them but once I get those I am done. Once I am completely tired of my character, I will then go thru but that will be the end of that character play thru and I will just start a new one. I love starting new characters, so it's not a big thing. Plus there are DLC's, I don't want to go thru the Unity if the DLC's involve thing prior to going into the unity. Anyways I agree with you

Right now I'm planning to keep my first character in her prime universe, and my second is going to jump to the end (NG+10) and set up shop there. I just realized Bethesda could do something down the road that allows greater than level 10 powers, and then my guy who set up shop in NG+10 might be tempted to move on. The Hunter has visited "thousands" of universes. Seems like his entire life has become the pursuit of power for power's sake. Doesn't seem like much of a life...

One thing, game mechanic wise, that turned me off of the NG+ was you cant sell exploration data to Vladimir anymore. I have one character that went through and figured if I am going to be redoing all the quests I might as well go with traits I learned I preferred during the first playthrough and also be able to feel like I was rewarded for exploring still.

It's funny, I think a lot of people have similar issues as well. I made a post at reddit describing similar feelings through a character perspective titled: "I hate the Starborn with a fiery passion." I hate the idea of leaving the ones I care about behind forever, and I think too many people fundamentally don't understand that just because you can go to another universe and possibly find the same people from the last, it doesn't mean they are in fact the same person. I romanced Sarah, and lost her. There's no guarantee that the Sarah in the next universe would want anything to do with me, and it's even possible I wouldn't like the other version of her. I also don't think either faction of Starborn is good either. I reject going into the unity, and I don't want either to be in control of my universe, so I'm going to kick both their asses.

@digitalsurvivalgaming
@digitalsurvivalgaming 5 ай бұрын
You can play differently with a different character, too. If you're role-playing, i.e. creating a fictional character and making decisions like they would, then to change the way that character plays requires a change of situation, since the character is consistent. That's why I have three different characters I'm playing with, each approaching their adventure in their own, unique way. If they jump through the unity, they'll still be the same person they were in the first universe, and the only motivation for making different decisions would be if they'd tried for an outcome the first time and failed. Suggesting that people who don't see the world the way you do are inexperienced shows a lot of hubris. I've been playing games since you bought them from a store in a box on 5.25 inch floppy disks. My expectations for games have been shaped over the course of decades. In the future perhaps you could state your opinion without demeaning the people you're responding to.

I had a choice to go through the unity but i decided not enter. I havent started the crimson fleet missions yet and im in the middle of the ryujin faction storyline, i have a feeling i will get super annoyed that onve i step through i will have to just redo alll the shit ive already done. Im not sure how it works, like if theres differences in how the missions play out or if you have to make new/different choices during those old missions in order for things to be different. I did that mission to get the last artifact with the emissary and my wife helping me kill all those shit tons of enimes, when i got to where it you confront the hunter i negotiated with him and we all ended things on good terms. And the hunter game me and the emissary the last artifact. I didnt know you could do that. Lol i was expecting the persuasion to not work no matter what dialogue you chose but it worked. And when i went to meet my other dimensional self it showed me that in my real universe that the emissary was able to keep control of the unity and him and some other starborn decided who would be worthy to use the unity. This surprised me cuz it means even though i didnt kill the hunter cuz i got him to back down, he still didnt like come back and try to kill the emissary or take the unity from the emissary. I thought it was going to show me that because i didnt kill the hunter he eventually just killed the emissary and took the untiy and caused chaos. But i guess he just changed his view or just stopped caring and decided to just live life lol idk

I am yet to get there due to starting over too often, but I like the idea. It probably helps that I maintain some distance between myself and others along with my own inclination towards the unknown. I'm more of a person who wants to learn and especially about things that aren't well understood. The bigger the mystery, the more appealing I find it to be. This can easily extend into games, for me it's important to see everything. I have a hard time sometimes because I play a game too much or I pull a Skyrim and start over too many times. I agree that there should be people who argue the opposite point though, it feels very weird to not have that happen. Especially if you have kid stuff, your parents should be highly opposed to it, or at least tell you to wait until the ideal time. I know I would do so if I had kids and they were planning that. I would be determined to do so myself however due to my curiosity. What will I find in the next one? Will I find myself in a different time period? Can I change history for the better with my knowledge and power? What will be the effects of my interference? Will somebody that I knew in the previous universe never be born? I would love to actually have such opportunities to be in the game, like stopping the destruction of Earths magnetosphere. If that was the case, it's possible Constellation wouldn't be founded, or somebody would found a similar organization with a different name. I need to stop, or I will keep coming up with scenarios to think about.

Who dies is a little complex. It depends on who you have high relationship with, and then what choice you make. One of your two high relationship people will be on the Eye, and the other at the lodge, when you have to make the choice of which place to be. The one you don't stay with/go to, dies. If Godhood was really an option, I think I'd jump at it. Starborn powers are a far cry from that, though. I'd also consider it more if you could keep together with some of the people you've come to know. The idea that either Sam would be okay with leaving Cora behind, or having her flung to some random universe is more ludicrous than me abandoning my parents (who would get evicted from New Atlantis without my income) and the Mantis, which is just righteous fun.

It's clear you have commitment issues. Going to the Unity and starting over is obviously a sacrifice. But all your companions want to go through with it, even Sarah, even though it means you might not be together. Sona won't be alone; there are several other members of Constellation who remain behind. You CAN get rid of the competition for your universe for everyone in the future. You just have to choose the right dialog options.
@digitalsurvivalgaming
@digitalsurvivalgaming 8 ай бұрын
I'd suggest that abandoning everything you've ever known and rolling the dice that the next go round might be better is closer to a commitment problem than sticking around with the people you've committed to. This isn't just Constellation, either. If you've become the Mantis, that's a role that would go lacking. If you've become a Freestar Ranger, that's one less Ranger in your starting Universe. If you're supporting your parents, who can only afford a place in New Atlantis because of they money you send them (according to in-game dialog) leaving through the Unity leaves them without that income. Maybe they get all your stuff, maybe they don't. It's not clear. If you have the Unity option and don't go through, you find that no one on your ship went through, either! They weren't ready. They can go through any time, but no one actually will. I don't have a problem with people playing the game they want to play. None of the people in it are real, and if someone wants to explore the multi-verse, have at it. I'm working on a character now that isn't getting tied down, and will dive through the Unity once they've powered up. Just my first character was working on building something in this universe, and leaving it all behind to jump into someone else's universe and start taking their stuff isn't something she would do.

The game is pushing you to understand two things. First, all the stuff you collect is meaningless and worthless. Second, all the people you meet are meaningless and worthless. Hit the Unity and you will get to... do everything again. Nobody at Constellation will remember you. It's your decision whether to play dumb and do the quest like before, or just blow the whistle and speedrun collecting a half dozen artifacts. After you take all your powers to level X, you never even need to do the temples anymore, you just go straight to the buried temple and have the final battle. It takes maybe ninety minutes to casually wander your way through the quest. So now what? What do you want to do? Develop a relationship with someone that won't remember you later? Go do quests for money and gear you don't get to keep? Buy and furnish a house you won't have anymore? Build an outpost you'll ultimately abandon? A ship you can't take with you? Why? What even is the point of any of that? So you look at your stuff and your people and you say no, I'm not giving any of that up, I'm keeping it. And you put down the controller and turn off the console and... poof, all your stuff and your people are gone. Look around. You don't really have that stuff. You don't really know those people. They're not real. They're digital data on a chip in a machine. They're meaningless and worthless. What even was the point of any of that? Only you know the answer, but that answer is probably the same in both places.
@digitalsurvivalgaming
@digitalsurvivalgaming Ай бұрын
You use the phrase "meaningless and worthless" several times in your post. I find that interesting, because value (arguably a measure of worth) is at least partly subjective. Certainly, in the physical world goods are produced by effort, and the minimum marketable value of a good is an aggregation of the costs to make it, but what that really ends up meaning is, if people value the good at or above the cost of production, then producing it can be profitable. If not, it can't, and usually any attempts at production are short lived. The value of an individual's relationships is also very subjective. Some people value personal relationships highly, and will go to a lot of effort to build and maintain them. Others not so much. Some want relationships with a large number of people, others prefer to only keep a few people close, but each relationship has a value assigned to it by the people involved, and even then, it can be different between two parties. So something that you (or the developers of this game) assert is meaningless and worthless can only be your judgement of that thing, whether digital or physical or emotional or intellectual. Another person, another player, can find value that you might not see or comprehend, and that's fine. We're all different, and what we value determines what we do with our time and energy. And I think it's pretty clear that millions of people value relationships and emotional investment in fictional worlds and people. If that wasn't true, changes to things like Star Wars, Marvel, and Warhammer 40K wouldn't produce such visceral responses. Those fans have an emotional investment in those worlds and/or characters, and someone changing them is painful, in a very real way. So, I'm still going to value the experiences I've had in the game. It was an emotional journey for me, that I can carry with me for the rest of my life. It's not as rich or impactful as my relationships with my family members, or even some of the other games I've played, but it's part of me, and by thinking what I would decide in some of the fictional situations I've played through, I'm just a little bit more prepared for the real situations I face every day.

The statement "only you know the answer" implies that we've delved into the realm of religious faith (or in this case, the absence of religion), and you seem to think that when we die, we disappear from the cosmos, much like turning off a video game. I disagree with that. At least, that's what I get from the continuation of that quote, "...that answer is probably the same in both places." But if I've misinterpreted, please, do clarify.

Multiverses have been done to death and they are almost always done poorly. If anyone could do them right, it 100% would not be Bethesda. Not Disney either. I will say that BGS did have one thing right, though... the universe as they created it is so bland and uninteresting that I wouldn't have any hesitation moving on to the next one... if I had any hope that it, too, would not be equally devoid or at least if I could bring ruin to that universe. But alas, it is not to be until mods fix this horrible, horrible video game nightmare.
@digitalsurvivalgaming

Now that would be an interesting path - universal destruction. I do want to say there are a lot of things about Starfield I'm enjoying. I've got the Kids' Stuff perk, and it's funny, rewarding, and entertaining. Some of the side stories are engaging, too, and there's just a lot of content. I'm the kinda person that enjoys planetary exploration too, and that's a pretty different animal than straight up power gaming is. It seems like Bethesda was trying to make this all things to all people, and hitting a lot of notes, which can result in something a little thin, but if you think about their marketing, and promises for the future, the expectation is this universe will continue to grow and evolve over a pretty long period of time, and that's just from the parent company. There are already modders working on adding to and filling in this world as well. I'm looking forward to exploring my prime universe for years to come. I'll certainly have a character peek into the next few multi's, but other than finding Sarah as a plant, I don't expect substantial differences. 😉
@ToxicPickle424
@ToxicPickle424 9 ай бұрын
While I like your optimism and can agree that modders are going to improve this game in immeasurable ways, it doesn't really take away from the fact that this game is boring and mediocre because BGS both didn't really know what they were doing and also didn't want to offend anyone or take chances on what was supposed to be a huge deal (1st new IP in 20+ years etc). Also putting any stock into what Todd Howard promises for the future of this game (or anything really) is a sure way to get yourself disappointed. It's pretty unlikely BGS is going to improve much of anything, but will release a couple lazy expansions where one might manage to be good, then call it a day.@@digitalsurvivalgaming

That's a tough one to answer. This year's was Baldur's Gate 3, hand's down, but I think it still pales compared to BG1 and especially 2. In terms of sheer hours played? (heavily) modded Skyrim (LE and SE) and Path of Exile. All previous Bethesda RPGs have hundreds of hours too so honorable mentions. Fallout 3 was the first game I modded if memory serves.@@digitalsurvivalgaming

100% with you man, I did go through di Unity but I had a strong motive for doing this and I think it ended up creating a pretty near canon for my character: In my first playthrough, I got attached to Sarah, flirted with her and romanced her and did the whole thing. When the Hunter attacked the lodge, I decided to escort the pieces of the relic with the others up to the Eye, I get there and Sarah is dead. At that point, I was dead set on entering the Unity and ending the Starborn madness no matter how many universes I had to go through, not just for Sarah, but the callous disregard The Hunter had for the people of New Atlantis, indiscriminately shooting while chasing us and hitting innocents as if they were just in the way, and not actual people. That whole scene pretty much set in stone that the Starborn barely have any humanity left in them and must be stopped. However, now that I found Sarah again, I romanced her and committed to her all over again and I probably shouldn't have, because now I have a strong motive to NOT enter the Unity. I'll probably find a reason at some point but for now, I'm stuck like you.

@cyberiusrex2343 - And reading it again today, I like the reminder. When I saw the choice between going to the Eye and staying at the Lodge, I knew what it meant. I knew someone would die, so I decided not based on what my character would do if the outcome were unknown, but what they'd do if it were known, and I saved Sarah and let Andreja die at the Lodge. Hated doing it, too, but in the end, that character kept their spouse and is happy to stay in their original universe. I've got another character to play another way, and he's going to marry Sam, then get him killed and see what kind of options I have for improving Cora's life (rather than her being isolated on a ship so often).

I honestly think their main goal was to implement some kind of new game plus mechanic, and thought this would be a cool way to do it, and honestly, it is an interesting idea. I'm certain if this were an option in reality, there would be a percent of the population that would be interested in abandoning everything they knew to go to a different universe, I just expect it would be more selfish people, which would be overall better for the universe, right? What if there was a universe where they built an armillary and used it get rid of their worst criminals? No powers (it's implied that anyone can go through, not just powered people) just thrown out of their universe. Holy cow, they're spreading their criminals to the rest of us!

I've felt exactly the same. For me, at the end, there is a big inconsistency in characters behaviour. Like some part of story is missing, something that changed their minds about Unity. Noone cares that they wont see each other again, even your romantic intrest doesnt give a F. And the game doesnt present any real reason for player to leave everything behind. Its just "we are explorers so now we need to go". Yes, but what for? No option for making final decision at the very end just ruined a RP element for me.

All these are valid points but highly dependent on an individuals concept of how they want to RP in this game. I went through the Unity 5 times. I’ve settled for now but I may go through again. It just gives players options regardless of the RP aspect.

@@NeonTheCoder Not fully clear what your saying here but I assume you mean regardless of the ability to play a “new game” you are limited in your choices? I'm cool with starting again, but I'd rather have the NG+ benefits with a new character than one where I built a network of bases and built a custom spaceship. I'd already started 4 different characters to try different playstyles before I knew what the Unity did. Still plan to play at least two of them through the full story arc.

One of the selling points of a great RPG (not asserting this on is great...) is the RP, Roleplaying. The chance to make choices and have outcomes differ based on those choices. To experience consequences in a virtual space without having to experience those consequences for similar choices made in the real world. One of the reasons that has value is the same reason a good play or book or movie or TV show has value, the emotional journey. Of course it's a game (or a show, or a book) but my emotional investment has a similar impact on me as it would in real life, and that's what I'm talking about. You suggest getting over it, I'm just about there. I've got a video to put together on Sam's relationship story, and the aftermath of his death at the hands of the Hunter, and maybe one about Starfield being an amoral game (which you'll probably be equally upset by) and then I'll be done until Shattered Space.
