The fact that Prince Xizor is straight-up mentioned, I have a feeling that the events of Shadows of the Empire still happened AND Crimson Reign is the answer to the question: "what happened to the background characters"? So in summary, in my head canon, the events of Shadows of the Empire novel is happening AT THE SAME TIME: 1.
