You can see how this movie acts as a pilot for SG1. They changed actors most likely due to availability, fees etc. It reminded me of the old Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV series recast the two lead roles as the movie actors were unavailable or too expensive. But SG1 does take up where the movie left off.
@ChibiHoshiDragon
@ChibiHoshiDragon Жыл бұрын
@@CaptainNemo1701 The actor switch up shouldn't bother anyone, it should be something fans take in stride. You NEED to be able to see the Character and NOT the actor when it comes to the Stargate Franchise. Stargate does BOTH - switch out actors and reuse them I mean: Drey'auc, Teal'c Wife, is at first played by Salli Richardson and later Brook Parker Cassie is at first played by Katie Stuart and then switched with Colleen Rennison Dr Weir was introduced in SG-1 played by Jessica Steen and is switched to Torri Higginson And the reuse of one actor for 2 characters ALSO happens on Stargate, just a few are: Colleen Rennison also played a DIFFERENT character named Ally in Bane Paul McGillion plays both Ernest Littlefield and Carson Beckett Garwin Sanford played Narim and Simon Wallace, Weirs' boyfriend Christopher Heyerdahl plays several characters, Pallin, Halling, Todd... Mike Dopud played 10 different characters So might as well get used to it with the movie. If actor differences matter, stargate is NOT for you

I can see the influence of astrophysicist in the show, but historian... not so much. The movie hit much more when it comes to design (Ra took form of egyptian god and so did few others so that explains why they have egyptian designs in everything and why they took the language, but show introduced gods from other religions and they too fly the same pyramid ships with egyptian hieroglyphs inside (even the most different one, Kronnos, had just differently designed seat in his ship), even though pyramids are not in every culture that goaulds took (are there any pyramids in Greece, China, or medieval Europe? no, how could they even land there then?), speak the same egyptian language, use the same unit (jaffa) with no different cultures between them, etc. which just doesn't make any sense) and also the relationship between gods was sometimes drastically changed from original (like this god was this god's son, this god banished this god, etc.). And the movie was also surprisingly original in symbolism (sarcophagus is not just coffin used to get you to afterlife, instead it's literally healing device which brings you to life, to a new life... to after-life, if you will, Ra is also god of the Sun, because he literally comes down from the sky, etc.).

14:30 No Teal'c serves Apophis this is Ra the former supreme system lord. Ra was the ruler of all goa'uld until the uprising on earth, when some other Goa'ulds, Apophis amongst them, used that as an excuse to depose him and he went into hiding on Abydos. The servants he has with him aren't even true Jaffa, they are just humans dressed like Jaffa. Jack says that in the first episode "There were no creatures like this on Abydos, those guys were human".

I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH! I grew up watching Stargate multiple times in the 90s, it's so nostalgic for me. I also legit think that it is a great summer blockbuster. I loved the concept of the aliens that they came up with and my favorite part is all the research they did on the ancient Egyptian language to have *accuracy* in the movie. Too bad it didn't spur a love of linguistics in me as a young child, I still only speak one language :( Loving this movie is why I started watching the TV show as a pre-teen and have great fondness for it. Watching failwhale34 watch it is showing me that it is actually a good show. I never realized what solid continuity and world-building they did even in just the first season. In Egyptian mythology, if I remember correctly: Apophis (whom I was raised to call 'Apep') was the serpent that lusted to devour Ra's Sun Barge each night as it traveled through the Twelve Hours of the Underworld. It was Ra's might, along with the aid of Bubastis (warrior goddess of cats) and several others that kept Apophis at bay, and allowed the sun to rise each morning.

Keep in mind that, among things you have been told already, is Richard Dean Anderson did NOT want to be in SG-1 because O'Neill is super damn serious. The showrunners ended up telling him he could literally do whatever he wanted as the character, if he'd agree to be on the show, so that's why O'Neill's way better in the show. Plus, the original with Kurt Russell suffered from the tropes of the early to mid 1990s, of the hardened, troubled and humorless soldier.

As far as I know the extras have complained a lot that the Jaffa helmets were too heavy. So it looks nice, but they couldn't afford to design a huge variety on SG-1. There were only 5 different helmets: spoiler alert We have already seen the hawk (Horus) and the jackal (Anubis) in the Stargate movie. The they have showed us the Serpent Guards (Apophis), later the Setesh Guard (as part of the throne of Seth), then there was a brief look of the Necropolis Guard (SG:W name for Sokar's Jaffas in season 3). We have seen the Lion Guard on the Stargate SG-1 : Unleashed mobile game (Sekhmet). And we have seen a cool Horus Guard again in Moebius (Ra). There's just 1 main thing I wish they kept from this movie though: the language barrier. It makes no sense that all the civilizations speak English, while also having their native languages in the series. Daniel spends loads of time to decipher certain ancient texts in the series, while those characters from those civilizations talk English lol. It's just a minor thing that I accepted and suspended by disbelief at, however, I think it would've been cool if there was a language barrier and a way that the characters have to communicate in those languages or give them somekind of Goa'uld translation device.

Did you watch this without any subtitles? Cause Ra is speaking and its meant to be understandable. Teal'c is not in this. These are not Jaffa, they're all human (dialog in episode 1 confirms that). You may have noticed, but in the film the Goa-ould are almost wearing like skinsuits of humans, its only in the show that they made them into snake like creatures. The gliders are slightly different in the movie, they weren't space fighters they were specifically designed for strafing ground targets with exposed cockpits whereas the SG1 versions have enclosed ones and spaceflight capabilities. The helmets differ depending on the Goa-ould they serve. Ra has the Horusguard who wear the bird helmets, with his commander Anubis wearing an Anubis mask. The Serpentguards serve Apophis who is known for his snake imagery. The Horusguard will appear in the show later on, but yeah the Serpent helmets were more practical for a prop even though they look janky.

I would say I oscillate between enjoying the film and loving it. The series is superior in so many ways, but this is a great popcorn flick and the series would not have happened without it. And, arguably, the movie would have been buried in the world of "meh" B movies for all time had the series not grabbed and run with it. Teal'c was in the service of Apophis and does not appear in the film. Apophis was off dominating some other world or worlds at the time and/or hanging out at Chulak. Michael Shanks got the role for doing a spot-on impersonation of James Spader in the audition! Richard Dean Anderson was cast early, I think by invite as a lot of MacGyver alumni were involved in landing the contract for the SG1 series and he was brought on. The series retconned a few things, but for the most part tried to incorporate as many plot-points from the film as they could. These come up in all three series and the later films as well, it's not just a kickstart for the first season. Emmerich STILL hates the series, but he's the only person I know who does. I think Shanks said it best in an interview that, yes, it's one thing to have someone take your baby and turn it into something you never intended it to be...but on the other hand, he sold the rights and surrendered creative control. Someone else picked it up, and the fans love it and multiple crews/actors/etc have poured themselves into the universe, so...he (Emmerich) doesn't have much to stand on.

The biggest changes I note between the movie and the show are mostly the design of the aliens, and the location of Abydos in the gate network. Ra here was shown to be a humanoid alien somehow inside of a human body, as opposed to the squirmy worms you saw in SG1. Also, Abydos was stated to be "On the other side of the known universe", while in the show they describe it as being relatively very close to Earth in the galaxy. Part of the show's retconning (and this is all season 1 stuff) was that they had to account for stellar drift, to allow the gate to connect to other planets, but Abydos worked because it was closer to Earth.
