I always wondered how they knew that though. It’s not like they could check all the planets after the fact, and it’s pretty obvious they hadn’t been in the area very long. and the database is 10k years old, after all. Any number of planets might’ve developed life or been colonized in that time, assuming animals don’t count as “habitation.” Even if all we’re talking about is a few worlds with animals, it’s a pretty massive cost of life that they’re pretty cavalier about.

Unlike some shows, Atlantis actually paid attention to things that happened in what you called "throw-away episode(s)". Nearly everything can actually be flow charted to other things later, so never dismiss any possible detail. And these again "throw-away episodes" are used to really delve into character development and really well-done lore drops to the point that practically nothing is thrown away.

So I just went through and counted all the doors and wheels in my apartment. Doors: 45 Wheels: 105 For doors I included room doors, closet doors, attic access panels, doors on appliances (refrigerator, oven, etc.), cabinet doors, etc. That number could probably be bumped up a bit by using a broader definition of door (is a toilet lid a door?). The vast majority of wheels came from drawers. Most modern drawers contain four wheels apiece. 21 drawers means 84 wheels. Add to that the casters on rolling furniture, the wheels in sliding and folding closet doors, and a few other odds and ends. I don't think my apartment is atypical. Having worked in manufacturing, I guarantee you that all factories contain more wheels than doors (excluding door factories). Office buildings tend to contain a lot of doors, but they also tend to contain a lot of drawers as well as rolling chairs which typically have five wheels apiece. Most vehicles contain more wheels than doors. All things considered, my money is on wheels.

Hey, thanks for typing this out! I paused the video so my husband and I could try to figure this out for twenty minutes and we weren’t half as thorough-he also mentioned bicycles and skateboards and rollerblades and roller skates and even wagons, which would add still more wheels.
@StarkRG10 ай бұрын
The issue is that it depends on what counts as a wheel and what counts as a door. Is a gear a wheel? Is the flap on a box a door? Is a drawer a door? Is a screw-on cap a wheel? The big decider, though, I think, is whether a non-compliant (not bendable) hinge counts as a wheel, if it does, that pretty much automatically hands it to wheels.
@vincentvoillot636510 ай бұрын
I love Rodney's centric episodes. Interesting reflexion on doors and wheels. But the point is, the wheel ease transport of loads, enable drived vehicles and many other mechanical applications. Doors are just entrances that can be closed.

Story-wise, this episode is brilliant. The show could’ve easily fallen into the trap of killing the tension by letting the audience think McKay was infallible and could bail them out of anything. Instead, the audience will always remember Dorada when McKay says he can fix something, and a tiny kernel of doubt will remain.

I like these seemingly one offs that actually hold seeds to other episodes Spoilers . . . . . The Arturus Project was taking energy from our own Space-Time - NEVER a good project. It leads to McKay trying to take Energy from another universe in "McKay and Mrs. Miller" Also, Major Carter trying to take small amounts from several universes in "The Road Not Taken" is what dragged Col Carter into her world and caused her own death McKay may have destroyed 5/6th of a solar system but an Alternative Sam died for doing a similar experiment. McKay was the luckier one Stick to Subspace

Wheels are objectively the correct answer. A car has four wheels on the ground, but think of the other wheels involved. There's one on the alternator, one on the AC compressor, one on the water pump, one on the power steering pump. Now expand this thinking to all of the machinery out there. Conveyor belts, power generation, trains, ships, airplanes. If you stretch the definition of a wheel, you could also include the billions of ball bearings that are a key foundation of modern society.

Every house has a front and back door....then consider rooms, bedrooms/bathrooms etc. Consider on every vehicle, there are usually driver's side door and passenger side door. Bicycles, ahakteboard, skates, rollerblades, grocery cart, LAWNMOWER. Every piece of kitchen equipment that has wheels. I don't know which has more....it would seem like wheels....but then I consider all the things that I am forgetting (the fact that I can be forgetting)....and all of the sudden, silo doors pop in my head....then trash can rollers I am tempted to say wheels....but, really, I don't know

Think of all the big cities on earth, then think of all of the buildings in each city. My thought is doors. Billions and billions of each...but doors overall.
@bufficliff89789 ай бұрын
There are more wheels. The amount of wheels in a kitchen alone outnumber the amount of doors in the home. I have 20 doors in my kitchen. I have a minimum of 84 wheels in my kitchen. That's not counting the wheels inside machinery that make some systems function. Just my kitchens wheels alone outnumber all the doors in my house, which is 42. If I went through my whole house and counted every wheel the number of doors would be dwarfed. Now doing that in a neighborhood the percentages would get more dramatic. Doing it in a city the percentage would get MORE dramatic.

A word to so-called science fiction writers like the folks on Stargate: It's not a solar system, it's a star system. It's only a (actually, THE) Solar system when the star in that system is named Sol. That's why every classroom wall poster says _The_ Solar System, because it's the proper name for the star system we inhabit. And don't get me started on using 'periapsis' instead of 'perigee'. Wanna go mucking about in starships, you gotta get savvy on the lingo.

All doors count as doors so fuel tank doors, hatches, trunks, elevators, breaker box doors etc. gears, tank wheels, pulleys, casters, train wheels, lawnmower wheels, cart wheels, those furniture moving things, sliding doors if they have wheels, etc.

Doors on cars in general don't outnumber the amount of wheels, and on top of that there are Trucks and Motorcycles where wheels ALWAYS outnumber the amount of doors, then there's bicyclewheels, flywheels, tracked wheels, rollerblades, skateboards, etc. etc. There is no way there are more doors than wheels in the world.

I love this episode because it puts Rodney in his place in a humongous way. His ego always made me angry and I really liked how Sheppard learned a lesson here too. The Ronin and Teyla storyline was great because we see how Teyla and Ronin work as a pair. Rodney causing this unfathomable wreck in the universe is a palatable way of an ego death. Rodney's arrogance blinded him one too many times for me to for any likable attachment to his character. His intro on SG1 already put me in the hater seat unashamedly because he thinks or even worse "knows" he is the most intelligent person in the room when clearly he is not. His character is not in the list of favorites for me. He even had the gall to square up to Samantha Carter, which was one more reason of many for me to strongly discredit any future relationships he would be involved in.
