Universe had a rough start because they tried to make it a space soap opera instead of stargate, like the other space operas that were popular at the time. Sadly it got cancelled after it finally started to move out of that and get back into being stargate. Finally started to find its feet and just like that it's gone.

Ballistic entries like this never made sense in sci-fi shows that have the technology to do it different. It would require far less power to slowly enter the atmosphere and not create all that friction. The have the engines and technology to do it.

@DayneTreader

The shield generates way less friction than the city itself would (which would tear itself to pieces during entry if the shield didn't exist), but the surface area of the shield is still massive, and with size comes more friction. Given they were powering the atmospheric thrusters AND the shield with a single Zero Point Module, and with that module being significantly depleted by activating the Hyperdrive, it was a rough entry and landing. The shield isn't butter-smooth either, it needs to be able to attenuate to let allied ships in while keeping enemy fire out.
@JimmyBlether
@JimmyBlether 4 ай бұрын
Amusingly the city shield would probably take atmospheric entry from low orbit quite well as it's so damn huge that the heating and shockwave would be pushed rather far from the surface. On the other hand assuming the planet is basically identical to Earth, and the stardrive can accelerate the ship ridiculously hard even when the ZPM is low on power, they probably could have reduced speed to about zero (delta V of let's say 7.5km/s) and eased her down without worrying nearly as much about friction. I do believe though that it would take about the same energy to do such a maneuver if nor more considering slowing down via engine power is far from free. It tends to be cheaper to work with the atmosphere than to avoid it.

I’m sure the production method is _somewhere_ in the database, the issue is finding and translating it. Remember, the database is in Ancient, and they literally have no idea what the Ancients called them. “ZPM” was just the name they came up with, so they can’t exactly just do a google search.

@@fedegerman1690 They’re using a lot of their own computer systems that they’ve tied into Atlantis. And, if you think about it, we don’t label all of our switches or buttons, so why would the Ancients? Light-switches aren’t labeled. Neither are power buttons on computers or phones, at most they have the circle with the line to symbolize a power button, they aren’t labeled in plain language. An alien looking at a computer power button wouldn’t have any idea what the symbol meant. So there’s really no reason to expect that the Ancients’s name for ZPMs is just written down somewhere. More importantly, the Humans have the Asgard tech left to them. They could probably use that to build a better power generator for the city and just cut out ZPMs entirely. But the writers wouldn’t do that, even though it makes far more sense than relying on naquada generators.

@aydenjacko5810
@aydenjacko5810 Жыл бұрын
During the ancient's time occupying the city they had 3 ZPMs which was enough to power whatever they needed and protect the city. However the Atlantis expedition until taking the city back to Earth only ever at any time had 1 functional ZPM which at best could power the city during a siege for a few days maybe a week due to the concentrated weapons fire formation the wraith developed against the city shield. The city in general just needed a lot of power, it would have helped if they didn't Dial earth as much, since it required so much power even for a brief time. (I think they dialed earth monthly which would have drained it so fast.

the city was never designed for war and was built like a normal city with requiring constant inputs from out side to keep it running. the city was more a political capital with manufacturing given to the other cities which were destroyed by the wraith.
@gamerboiiiiiii
@gamerboiiiiiii 4 ай бұрын
Given the fact the city was meant to function via 3 ZPMs (they typically only had one, this one being new and the old one being relatively worn down). It makes sense as to WHY they are still limited on power. The ZPM only has a specific throughput which yes can be increaed within the actual physical devices abilities. Whereas if they had three they could pratocally power it for linger than any of us could live.

It's a small gripe but wouldn't the air pressure be different inside the shield and on the surface of a new planet?
@cad4922
@cad4922 5 ай бұрын
That's true, maybe they could compensate for that by partially lowering the shield to reduce the effects of rapid compression, like a submarine does
@JimmyBlether
@JimmyBlether 4 ай бұрын
The difference wouldn't be so great as to cause problems I'd think, as if it were on the order of a good fraction of an atmosphere's difference a la mountaintop to sea level then the crew would probably have issues afterwards with how much air they have to breathe. It's easy to assume that they chose a planet with an atmospheric pressure pretty much identical to Lantea otherwise that would be a bit silly of them.

Well, it's going to be different while in space also... While in space, the shields are going to be holding in probably close to 1 ATM of pressure (assuming that the planet they departed from has a similar air pressure to Earth). When they get to the new planet, one would assume that they chose one that was close to Earth-normal pressure, so equalization of pressure would be a trivial matter...
@Petrosman

So did they technically have 2 ZPMs at this point? When the Ancients took over and then replicators attacked and took the city, they had 3 ZPMs, 2 were given away to Earth (one to the Odyssey, one to the base in Antarctica). They did this whole thing with 1 ZPM. They stole one more ZPM from the replicators, so they now had 2 right?
@alancoll1987
