In addition to all the other criticism that have been said about this episode, I think it might have been responsible for the show "aliens speaking English" problem. In the pilot episode there was a clear distinction between the primitive civilizations who either didn't understand English or were taught it by Daniel, and the Goa'uld/Jaffa who inexplicably spoke in perfect English. this seem to suggest that there was some kind of translation technology involved. unlike the next few episodes, who could have easily been written with Daniel or Teal'c acting as translators for the team, this episode start with the natives being immediately hostile for reasons the team had trouble understanding even with easy communication. without English, this episode would have ended 5 minutes in, with the team hastily retreating through the gate while shooting to defend themselves. by making this episode this early, they basically forced themselves to ditch any kind of "universal translator" arc that they might have planned

Hi Shannan! I'm with your dad on being psyched about you doing this series. As I mentioned before, the other reactors doing this get in the way. The edits are choppy and there's too much bloviating. You're pretty adorable, you make short comments, and you chuckle at funny lines. Perfect. I look forward to these every day because you're the best reactor, not to mention Tony's exquisite edits that actually allow anyone who's not seen the episode to actually follow it. What a great development you doing these. Yeah, I'm with your dad. This was great fun and it made my day!!! Love you! :) PS: Love Tony too! TONY!!! Your edits are sublime!!!

Shannan...like when O'Neill says, "We'll pay ya back." You chuckled. That's what I did every time he'd make a funny remark. You made a natural, unexaggerated reaction, which is why you're so much fun to watch. You'll find, as the episodes progress, that the reason this series was so good was the camaraderie among the team members, but especially the humor that didn't overtake the seriousness of the action; it simply lightened moments. Richard Dean Anderson was adamant that he be allowed to make O'Neill more accessible, via his own sense of humor, which, in my opinion, made the series. Oh, can't leave off Teal'c's comment: "What's an Oprah?" A brilliant addition (not to mention Carter as a foil for warrior O'Neill) was fish-out-of-water Teal'c. More funny comments from him are coming too.
@nikoskn1252

Don't get me wrong I think O'Neill's humour is great, but honestly I think many fans can agree that Daniel is the heart and soul of the show. I will elaborate letter in the series as to why he is the best character in the entire franchise.
@christopheryochum3602
@christopheryochum3602 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikoskn1252 Oh no...nothing to get wrong. Daniel was the perfect foil for warrior O'Neill. My contention about the improvement of the O'Neill character was simply because "movie O'Neill," Kurt Russell (and perfectly fine for a one-off movie) was made a bit softer and more accessible. Daniel was ALWAYS the perfect foil for all the soldiers who surrounded him, even in the movie. And Michael Shanks was a great "get" for the TV show. So, nothing to get wrong. The spread of philosophies and disciplines of each team member is why I love watching this series over and over. Good comment, and you have a GREAT day! Cheers!

IMO, This is one of the worst episodes of Stargate SG-1. Not necessarily the worst, but it is up there. In saying that, I don't hate it, I have seen much worse episodes of shows I just don't think this is a great episode of this particular show. I personally think earlier seasons of SG1 tried so hard to write Sam as a strong female character that they took it a bit too far. In the end, Amanda herself went to the writers and said, look just write me as you would the guys and I will make it feminine, you don't need to write her any differently (gender-wise anyway). Def don't need lines like "Just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside..."
@Idran

The racism in this one really doesn't help either. Historical Mongols were actually _less_ misogynist than their neighboring contemporaries in China or Persia, and certainly didn't hide away their women or treat them as slaves with zero agency. It was a patriarchal society like basically every other, yeah, and women weren't considered the equal of men, but they still openly tended fields, took care of herds, and even fought on the front lines on horseback alongside men. It feels like the screenwriter just assumed "ancient people who fought a lot, they must've treated women like animals," and barely bothered to even look into more than the barest details of actual Mongol culture. Plus it would've been nice to have some actual Mongolian actors in this, though that's more an issue with casting than the writer. And honestly that's definitely a recurring issue in Stargate, not just in this episode, as much as I enjoy it. :P

@@Idran To be fair, that is raised by Daniel in the episode, about how the way the tribes in the show treat women differently than what he'd known on earth. They explain it started because they tried to protect the women from Goa'uld 'harvesting'. But had developed into a very misogynyst society over time.

@@Idran It's also a very historically inaccurate portrayal of Mongolians with the whole 'abducted from earth and forced into slavery by aliens' thing. The fk are you on about dude, they state in the episode that this culture has diverged specifically due to Goa'ould influence, that it was originally for protection but over time became a thing of control. Calling something that is intentionally not an accurate representation of a real culture 'racist' due to said inaccuracy is a very bizarre and redundant thing to do. As for the sexism side of it, that's literally the point of the episode. It's not a good episode, but its also not any of the stuff you're accusing it of.

And I even started to LIKE G'oauds and Jaffa stories.

It still bothers me that they just assume the audience will accept that people of other cultures (on other planets) speak and understand English, without giving us so much as a single line of explanation or even acknowledging it as a thing! It makes sense, mind you; they can't very well spend 25% of each episode having Daniel learn the local language, or create a unique language for half of the show's episodes and expect actors to learn them for just one episode. And as the show progresses you come to accept it. And in a few episodes (no spoilers) they do let Daniel touch back to his linguistic and cultural expertise, which is nice. But in this first mission episode, it's quite jarring to just go to another planet and hear the people there speaking English, to me.

I think the issue is that the writers didn't find a good balance between the telling the messages and telling the story; its a good message to send but it does kinda beat you over the head with it, which unfortunately takes away from the overall storytelling. It kinda reminds me of some of those early episode in Star trek TNG series.

@@shadowphoenix1696 I think it's mostly just coincidence tbh :P Most of the worst parts of "Code of Honor" were the fault of casting; the screenplay never said everyone on the planet should be black. If it wasn't for that, it'd just be a meh episode instead of an ultra-racist one. And she did write some great episodes on SG-1 later, so I don't hold this one against her too much

This is one of those episodes you should watch once, because it gives you an idea of how strong Carter is in both body and mind - most episodes focuses more on Carter's mind and heart -, but should otherwise skip it in subsequent watches because it's mostly irrelevant to the general plot and it's not particularly fun watching how Carter is treated in it. I'm also pretty certain that Mongol culture isn't treated well here either.
@Richard_Ashton
@Richard_Ashton 2 жыл бұрын
All I recall is that Carter's commanding officer made an Air Force captain and physics PhD take off her uniform and dress like the natives then laughed at her. none of the others had to do this. Judging by the culture either Carter should have gone back through the stargate or said 'Over my dead body'. Perhaps it was considered acceptable by the writers but I'm not convinced the Armed Forces would have condoned this. You might guess this episode made me very angry when I first saw it.

"I'm also pretty certain that Mongol culture isn't treated well here either. " Yeah, I mentioned this in another reply, but if you had to choose "ancient culture who treated their women as barely better than animals," Mongols are like...the _worst_ ones to choose, to a degree that I'm sure the screenwriter didn't even look into Mongol culture barely at all. Women weren't generally _equals_,on the whole, yeah, but they were better than many other contemporary cultures. And Sorghaghtani, daughter in law of Genghis Khan, was one of the most politically powerful people in the Mongol Empire, and possibly one of the most politically powerful women in all history.

This episode borders on racist and ahistorical, and the writing doesn't frame Carter's struggles particularly well, even if they're sympathetic. _That_ series shows an atrocity of a world that, even when it premiered, feels painfully plausible given the political headwinds we can and must keep fighting, especially so as author Margaret Atwood specifically stated, paraphrased: "I didn't put anything in this book that hasn't already happened in history."

Since Stargate has many similarities to supernatural, down even to the casting, then I guess this is the Bugs equivalent of SG-1. I personally can think of worst episodes than this, that are actually detrimental to the plot and characters, so I don't think it's the worst episode, However that 6.5 on IMDb and the distaste by fans is warranted. This is just a bad episode all the way around and honestly it's fillers like this that made season 1 not age well. Things get better though.

@@nikoskn1252 I'm not really a fan of having it be the kids of certain characters, I think it'd be too on the nose and kinda cheap. I imagine the kid of a certain black haired character acting really bratty all the time, constantly berating her old man and how he used to do things. I gotta say, not a fan. In the new show I would like to see them resolve some stories for all shows but other than that I can't imagine what it would be like. I'm sure Brad Wright will come up with something good though. I've watched all 3 shows and basically loved every minute of it. :D
@nikoskn1252

@@TonyWasHere Frankly besides universe there is nothing left to resolve and since so much time has passed I don't think it would matter anyway. That's why I suggested starting fresh with this concept. Now if they do it like the cringeworthy CW way that you basically described then yes I can't stand it either. However if it's done right, if instead of berating the old generation, those kids treated their parents with admiration and respect and basically wanted to leave up to the standards they set, then there is so much potential for many emotional storylines to come. A passing up the torch scenario also fits the theme of Stargate. Continue, moving on, expand your horizons. I mean other than a fresh new concept I don't know what else is there. I unfortunately will never accept the ideas that universe presented as a scientist myself. And I know I am talking about a series were a certain Daniel Jackson concept still makes no sense, but I guess this is were I drew the line. So far Brad seems to include 3 out of 4 og characters. Christofer Judge apparently is to busy voicing Kratos on God of War Ragnarok.

No, good "apolitical" female empowerment would have been the likes of the average Powerpuff Girls episode, or a good episode of Charlie's Angels. And even then, it IS fundamentally political merely for having women at the forefront of a mass-market story just on the basis of how many dumbasses don't believe in people outside of (cis, rich) men actually having control over their lives. Shouldn't be the case, but it is.
