Ship self-destructing would likely deploy a probe with all the data it could grab from the ship's computer, as well as document the self-destruct event as it happened so Starfleet would know what happened. Said probe would then make its way to the nearest starbase, advertising its position on Starfleet coded frequencies for retrieval. There were probes even in the 23rd Century that could travel at warp speed. That's one way how such footage would be had. That data would have cleared Kirk of the charge of destruction of the Enterprise, as it would show it to be necessary to prevent the Enterprise from being captured by hostile forces. If he had a formal inquiry and court martial, of course.

One of my many favorite scenes from the show. On a little side note, it's occasionally implied that Daniel's ascension left some mark on him despite the memory loss thing, and i wonder if it has something to do with the fact that in this episode he seems to be the only one being able to recall any memory from the possession and also immediately identify that it's Anubis. I kinda wish this idea was explored a bit more. 😁

I don't get why anubis never just possessed the president and took over the world, could easily gain gate access after that and he'd basically have a massive army that's trusted by all the advanced races. He could create a new sg team and have them steal from the asgards or trick them into 'meeting' somewhere he set a trap at. At the very least he could steal all the tauri knowledge and sabotage diplomatic relationships to ensure we're no longer a serious threat considering how big of a thorn in his side we were. He's immortal and untouchable so there wasn't much of a rush to escape...
