The way Stark talks is very casual and informal. Common folks can relate to him and this makes him likeable to kids and other villagers but it sometimes gets him in trouble with nobles. In contrast, the way Fern talks is very respectful and formal, making her seem more distant and cold.

Stark is so awesome. It was so cool watching him fight the dragon, and his relationship with Fern is the cutest thing about this anime series.

Stark and Fern's relationship makes a lot more sense when you remember that they're both socially awkward teenagers. Fern in particular can definitely come off as a bit blunt or mean sometimes because she's so used to being with Frieren, who is... pretty eccentric. Stark is not only her first friend who's around the same age, but also her first MALE friend, so there's definitely a bit of awkwardness there as she slowly gets used to him.

this episode is about how many of our limitations are in our own heads. but what i love the most is how frieren immediately compliments stark after he defeated his dragon. she is truly paying attention to humans and it is a subtle way to display character development.

And I love Fern… she’s such a savage, lol. I hope one day Stark will be able to show her that his small thing can get way bigger. ^_^

Fern's social awkwardness is similar to Frieren's ignorant bluntness, but she comes off cold. Fern is my favorite for sure, her dynamic with Stark is just enjoyable.

I think Eisen couldn't admit to Stark that he was afraid of him because that would change the whole dynamic between Master and Student, he was only able to admit it to Frieren as an equal. Mr. Stark sounds so wrong to me, because there are no Iron Man suits in this anime. 😂
