Today we are taking a look at another affordable Chinese watch. Yet this is something interesting. A $50 High Beat with Sapphire. It's the Starking AM0184. A 40mm very clean looking dress watch, with specs too good to be true.
Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, I am an Amazon affiliate so I would earn a small commission on qualified purchases. But most of the time Amazon is just the best source to link something just to get a look. I always encourage you to shop around and find the best price.
In Addition, I'm also an affiliate with AVI-8, Armilla, Aliexpress, Spinnaker, eBay, Jomashop, and Phoibos.

No one else seemed to have taken a look at it, which was one of the reasons I bought it. Farily impressive for the price, and I'll be keeping an eye on what else they make. It's good to see that they have also spread to Amazon, so people don't have to wait as long for some of their models. Which Starkings do you have? That's a good idea for a video, I'll have to start planning something out.

Relative Time I got them on Amazon a few months back - both had half-off coupon offers. A black and yellow partially skeleton sports watch, and a two-tone dress watch with small seconds and date window on a bracelet. $35 and $30, respectively-both hand wind and the dress watch hacks as well. Sadly, I see neither for sale anywhere online, so I’m glad I pulled the trigger. Along with my $45 Casio Duro on an $18 Blueshark nato, they make the perfect (very) poor man’s three-piece collection. :) Love the channel-thanks!

Purchased one, based on your review, and it just came in - yes a tad plain but the specs more than make up for that. Especially like the "pie pan" case. As you, I've already had it on a number of differ straps and with those vs. the factory strap it kicks ass. Thank you!

Great review, as usual. A dress watchs' main feature is to blend in, not stand out. Only you know it's there and it tells time. The more simple it is, the better. This one can be had for 30 bucks right now and I'm getting one. Too good to be miss out.

Thanks for the review. There are a lot of hidden treasures coming from the east. This one is a pleasant surprise. I personally appreciate the clean dial a lot. The only thing i didn't like was the finishing of te movement. It really needs some more attention if you have a crystal caseback. I would appreciate a comparison a lot. Thanks from the Netherlands (Europe)🙂

The movement is definitely better then some I've seen. But they could do a little better. It's hard to see in the video, but at an angle you can see a big white plastic movement holder. Which always bugs me a little. If your not going to use metal, at least paint it to blend in more. Thanks for watching, and stoping to comment!

A thorough, and thoroughly enjoyable, review (not to mention, you've got a serious set of pipes). I had to chuckle at the irony of a watch changing dates at an odd time on a channel called "Relative Time" :) I like the alternate straps you used, particularly the green leather job, but I'm not sure any of them changed my overall opinion that the face is just too bland for me, hi-beat or no. Either way, excellent job on the video! Subscribed, and am looking forward to more.

Thanks! Although I think the "Epic Voice Guy" who does honest trailer is better. Love that guy! I hadn't thought of that, but I can appreciate the irony. 👍😁 The Starking is a little boring, which is why I started throwing on all the straps to being with. Trying to liven it up a bit. Not just for myself, but I figured no one would want to stare at a plain white dial for 15 minutes. Also why I showed it next to that watch at the end. If I could swap that movement into that quartz watch, it would be something really interesting. Although that seems to be becoming a common theme with these watches from China. Sort of a series of missed opportunities. Just watched your video on Holuns and Orient star. I liked it. You said you were testing equipment. Does your wife have a channel?

Lol. If you're married, this scenario will not come as a surprise: Her: "Honey, I want to start a KZbin channel. Buy me a camera and set things up!" Me: "Ok." Buys two cameras, lenses, soft box lights, lavalier, etc. Even RTFM. Makes two test videos. Me: "There you go, dear. I ironed out the lighting problem in the first video. You're good to go." Her: "Hmmm. I'm not sure I want to make videos any more...." So, yes she has a channel. As to whether or not she'll use it now....which way is the wind blowing? (I think if Epic Voice Guy ever disappears...you're in, giggity giggity!)

LOL. Yah been married 13 years, so I know how it is. I'll let you in on a little secret. It took about 2 months of making these before I started getting any kind of audience. So by my 7th video I was a little frustrated. So I decided to try something random, since no one was watching. I think it's the timex flyback one. I decided to do the closing bit in my Radio Jazz DJ voice. I'm embarrassed to say, its got over 3k views, but no ones ever mentioned it. So if your really bored check it out. 🙃

I haven't checked out starking in a while, but I assume they are still selling them. One interesting thing they started doing was to introduce Miyota movements into some of their watches. In some ways that should help put people who were concerned about the movement at ease. Yet it also took away what was interesting and different about their watches.

I love how this watch looks and I want to pick this up for my every-day watch. I'm a bit concerned about the accuracy though. After owning this watch for a couple weeks, have you noticed the accuracy improving/worsen from the +/- 6 seconds/day you described in the video?

Great review as always! Would be nice to know how long the movement lasts (i dont mean like decades, but like does it last 3-9 months and then disintegrate, or several years). I had some Parnis watches several years ago that looked and worked great for a few months, but then the gears fell apart due, i think, to low end materials. would be good to do a 6monthly update review on performance. :-D

Thanks. Starking has evidently realized that their hibeat movement is unique to the market place. In the last few months, I think they have been contacting and sending out watches to a number of channels. Including a few really big ones. So they have now sold a bunch of these. If they start failing, I'm sure people will start talking about it. If not here then on forums like watchuseek.

The chrono is great for the price, I'm glad you like it. $36 for the hi-beat is pretty good for it. The recently started selling them on Amazon, which right now I think they are $49. There is also the AM0255. It's newer, and has 3 more colorful options. The review on Amazon says it uses the same hi-beat movement. But I haven't got one myself to check. So could be another to look at. I'm trying to resist the Ali sales, as I have a bunch to review as it is. But I keep looking at the AM0259. I must resist, but I probably wont...😋

I haven't looked at one in a while. I think this might of been the first starking review on youtube, everyone else seemed to follow suite. Then Starking started sending watches to reviewer when they realized they had something interesting. Which they then followed by making a ton of different models all with this movement. I haven't looked at one in a while (even though they have asked) because I didn't see anything that sparked my interest. But I was getting concerned that they were starting to push the limits of their QC.

I also have the Starking and find it looks slightly bland. I think some chrome around the date would have been a good touch. Being so plain however means you can jazz it up with different coloured straps. All in all I'm happy with it at the price and for me it's an occasional wear.

I think the taper makes a world of difference. It shouldn't but it changes its visual appearance on the wrist, it changes how it sits on the wrist. I have a Citizen Nh8350, the blue dial one. And I love that dial but the case is just a cylinder. And after having the Starking, it makes hard to go back to the Citizen.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
I think it just narrows the surface that contacts your wrist, so it makes it feel smaller then it is. I think that's the same reason the exhibition case back on subbys come down to a narrower point. It lifts it off the wrist, and feels smaller. Starking is starting to make some more colorful options, but so far nothing as good looking as that citizen.

Thanks, appreciate it! I saw the 19mm on Ali as well. But the strap itself says 20. I measured it, and it is a very tight 20. I think its about 20.15mm. So "most" 20 mm straps should fit. yours still running ok? mine is fine after 9 months or so. I saw someone on youtube do a full tear down and he saw scoring under one of the plates but no debris - starking said they stood by a 5 year - no problems estimate on this movement. I still think it is very nice for $50, especially if it ends up trouble free for a few years.

I saw that video. Very interesting and maybe the best starking video out there. The key thing is that for the price these are pretty good. Hard to find anything else with a highbeat movement for $50. Mine was working fine, but I sold it a month ago. So I can't say how it's going now. I had 4 starkings and decided to only keep one. So that one which is the grey with the sub second dial. The rear crystal MAY not be sapphire. You'll need a diamond tester to verify this. They can be had on Amazon for less than $20. You can find youtube videos on how to use a diamond tester to verify a sapphire crystal. I've got an aliexpress watch with a miyota 9015 movement and only the front crystal is a sapphire. The movement in this watch appears to be a DG2813 (or one of its derivatives). If it is one, then this is a 21,600 bph movement. However, I've read rumors that a 28,800 variant of this movement exists. If so, that may be what this watch is using. The 2813 is not a high end movement, but they are known to be reliable.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
I've since picked up a diamond tester. So far most AliX watches only have it on the front. I've seen lots of discussions on the movement here. Starking swears it's theirs. Although I'm sure they based it on something.

I'm guessing it is probably an existing movement that has been converted to high beat. In-house movement doesn't necessary mean that it's good and usually it's extremely expensive for any company to create their own movement, which is why so many micro brands use the NH36. I bought a Starking and the second hand has an intermittent stutter. They obviously haven't worked out the kinks in the high beat movement. Personally, I regret getting this watch. I should have gotten the Cadisen or the Guanqin since the Seiko movement has a much better track record of reliability.

Did you notice the stutter right away? Or did it develop over time?
@georgechau6800
@georgechau6800 5 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime the stutter is intermittent and so it is hard to determine whether it was already doing that and just got worse or it was like that from the beginning and I just wasn't paying enough attention. I sent it back to Starking earlier this week so depending on how many watches they have to repair and how many people they have dedicated to do the repairing, it will take at least 6 weeks for the watch to return but likely a bit longer.

Is that a real chanel name? Or you just messing with me. 🤔 But yah more then just Chinese movements. Miyota is the most famous. It's called an indirectly driven second hand. Vostoks also have them. It's technically a protective feature. Doesn't effect time as it skips ahead faster to catch up.

Ok just watches it. I Don't know enough about him to know if he knows what he is talking about. But I wouldn't call +16 sec a day inaccurate. Hell most of the Seiko movement's I've gotten are around there or higher. So far this is one of the best I've seen about starking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpCol5SobKmfr9k As he takes it completely apart... even swaps the movement for a Miyota. Kind of fascinating. But I know what hes talking about at the beginning saying the lady is relentless. Part of the issue is that there are two groups sending starkings out to people. The people that run the shop on Aliexpress and a separate group on Amazon. The Amazon person told me they were all part of the same company, but when I asked AliX, they had no idea who these people were. Honestly, I'm not sure if either are really connected to the brand, but the Aliexpress gets newer models. They are also much nicer. The lady who is the main contact at amazon is rather demanding. I had the same experience when she sent me a watch. I had to write a looooong "come to jesus" email to her before she way backed off. Basically reminding her I'm doing a review, not making her a commercial. If the Aliexpress people have somethign I might review another starking, but right now I haven't seen anything too interesting popup.

It's a typical sea gull movement. Starking does not produce its own movements. Only sea gul movements have that typical sea shell like texture.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
You mean the texture on the rotor? I've seen some discussions on this, but never saw any definitive conclusion. Most of what I've seen suggests they make the movement, but it's based off another design. Seagull would be a likely candidate, although I think Seagulls are mostly based on Eta movements. The only reason I doubt it's a seagull is that most of the seagull watches I've seen cost a lot more than the starkings.

Higher frequency doesn't really translate to better accuracy. If a movement beats at 28.8K per hour, and each beat is off by the same amount as a movement that beats at 21.6K, the 28.8K watch will be *less*, not more accurate. It's how closely the beat actually conforms to the expected # of beats per interval of time, that is, the precision of each beat, that determines the accuracy. People tend to covet high beat movements, but there are some downsides: a shorter power reserve, likely a more frequent need for service (as it's wearing out the parts at 4/3 the rate of a 21.6K movement). On the positive side, you get a smoother second-hand sweep.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert, and could be completely off about it. But this is why I always thought it was more accurate, and I'm just pulling this off the top of my head. So forgive me if it's a little convoluted. If the watch was stationary and not moving, I think your 100% correct. Precision is how reproducible each beat is, and if there are not external forces on the watch, each beat should be the same. Ignoring any differences in the tension of the spring over time. But as the watch is moved around, specifically through the centripetal force on your arm it effects the precision of each beat during that period of time. Which I believe is one of the reasons the military wanted tuning fork and then quartz watches in aircraft. Less impact of the g-forces during maneuvers. Anyway, I don't belive the higher beat movement makes each beat more precise. Simply that the beats are faster, and more of them. Which should lessen the overall impact of external forces on the overall accuracy. If that makes sense? Statistically speaking if you are analyzing an imperfect system, the more data points you have usually leads to a more accurate result. As it lessens the impact of outliers. I hope that makes sense, but again I'm not an expert. So perfectly willing to admit if I'm wrong. Cheers!

Is there a difference between saying "an in-house movement" and "an in-house movement so to speak"? The latter implies it doesn't quite count because it's a cheap Chinese movement.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 3 жыл бұрын
In this case I said that not because it's a cheap Chinese movement, but because some people weren't sure if it was true or not. As no one had ever really heard of them before. I think this was actually the first Starking review on KZbin, not their are a bunch more. The strange thing is that they seemed to have switched to miyota movements. Which on one hand lets people have more confidence in them, but at the same time takes away what was interesting or special about them.

@RelativeTime

That is the question. They only started becoming well known on the internet 6 months ago. The company has been around a while, as well as the movement. Usually many of the Chinese companies base their designs off of well tested Swiss and Japanese movements. So hopefully it will last a good while. But right now no one can say for sure. A lot of watch geeks have been buying them, so if they do start to have issues it they will start talking about it here or on forums.

CORRECTION: The automatic winding part is not a "PENDULUM" as you called it. A "pendulum" swings back and forth from a hinged point at it's top point which this part DOES NOT. This part ROTATES around a centered axle and is called a "ROTOR". I am a retired professional engineer. All other watch reviewers refer to it correctly, View some of them. Errors like this make you appear not very knowledgible or professionable. No offence intended.

There were a few bigger channels that all did a video on this watch, right when the sale started. So I'm thinking they are starting to get a little bit of a PR machine going. I wasn't planning on it, but I also bought another stalking (err starking) before the sale ended. Same movement, but a little bit more interesting dial.

I have a Vostok 2234 from 1985 which is also a 18,000 Bph movement. This watch is handwinding and hacking. Pull out the crown and the movement stops. Chinese vintage. I have a Shanghai 1970s reissue with the 19 Jewel 7120 movement. 21600bph. I have a new Parnis with a Seagull handwind movement running at 21600bph. Keeps good time at +5 seconds per day. It has a huge power reserve of 56 hours. I checked it. I have it on a 22mm taneather German strap. I love it. I have a Winner Rolex Sub automatic that I bought for £12.
