STOP PRESS. Price now $49 on amazon here .... amzn.to/2M3CNOW !!!!!
UPDATE: and in UK on amazon it's now only £49... amzn.to/2HqSWcE ....which ic good because when I published this is was way more.
This Starking AM0184 Watch has caused a bit of stir in the watch enthusiast community. The issue is the high specification and the very low asking price from Starking.
I was very kindly sent the watch by one of one of my subscribers who had purchased it and wanted to understand more about the watch and just how much of a bargain it really is.
Starting in The Port of Nice, France this video includes a thorough examination of the outside of the watch which I then take back to my watchbench in the United Kingdom for a more detailed analysis including putting this Starking AM 0184 on the timegrapher and opening up the back of the watch to examine the movement more carefully.
As a watchmaker I am well placed to advise on other watches and so here is my pick of some great pieces at very competitive prices …

Hello, superlative video!!! For the First World, US 50 dolars may seem cheap, but for poor countries like Argentina, you have to work more than 180 hours (a month) to get it. Sending a watch for a full service is impossible and there are almost no watchmakers at all, so we have to dump all watches. Even a battery costs 2 h of work. For us this is pure luxury...Sighs. I have been collecting watches for more than 60 years. Thank you and cheers from Patagonia.

Honestly, ever since I saw Jody cover a couple of these over at JOMW, I've been curious about what they're like on the inside, but there's nothing surprising here. I don't really frown on unidirectional automatic movements. I've got several swiss watches that have one-way movements (one's a Vjx7750), and they're very good and durable performers. This watch, itself, isn't my cup of tea, but if someone wanted an auto and didn't have a couple hundred bucks for an entry-level seiko, then what's the harm with this? Nice to get your rundown as always. Many thanks.

I find my 7750 to have faster/more efficient automatic winding than bidirectional eta 2824 or seiko 7009. On the other hand, citizen unidirectional automatic winders are in my experience the most inefficient autos

@@rokokoko123 The reason Citizen went for unidirectional winding is simplicity. Not to mention the Miyota 9015 is considered one of the most durable modern automatic movements.

Thanks for this review. I think this Starking is excellent value for money. I bought a Gladster Chinese watch, with a Miyota movement for 39 Euro's. This older movement only winds one direction, the rotorweight doesn't have a model number, but it looks like 9015. I'am very satisfied with the performance. So I don't think it is a major problem. Thanks for this review and greetings from the Netherlands.

Hi. Nice review as always. You have an eye for details. However, I want to share my experience with it as I own it. I have about 25 watches and I care for my watches. None of my watches is scratched or anything. The bracelet of this watch is really weak. My watch bracelet was so beautiful initially however within two weeks all of it is scratched. The watch itself is not scratched it's only the bracelet. I firmly believe it is not a stainless steel bracelet. I loved this watch so much it's just the bracelet which spoilt the fun. Thanks.

Love this watch, I have one in my collection, the dial looks grayish as the sunlight cast over it, I may consider putting a cyclops on the crystal to remedy that discrepancy! Over all it works well for a $50+usd and feels great on the wrist as well! I opted for the dial without numerals, however this model would look better with the 3 and 9 numerals on the dial! Just my opinion...

Great review, thanks. I actually just found out about this watch a couple days ago and was searching around for more info, so your review is perfectly timed. Is the bracelet on this one original? It looks different to the photos on Aliexpress. Regarding the date window, I think it would blend in more on the white dial version and be less of a problem. What do you think about the longevity of the movement? Keep up the reviews, you're performing a valuable service for people like me who are looking for quality budget watches. How often does a watchmaker spend half an hour reviewing a $50 watch? A rare treat.
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hi General Krull! The bracelet is original and came with the watch. It's really pretty impressive, it catches the light nicely and is dressier than your average sub-like bracelet. I figure the movement will be good for at least five years unless a quality issue brings it to a sudden halt. Servicing is not an option at this price. So pleased you enjoyed this video and thank you so much for this feedback. Richard

I bought an earlier version without the Arabic numbers which I prefer because I really like symmetry and a simple, minimalist design. I agree that the dial is very elegant and my version has a different style stainless steel bracelet. Yours reminds me of a jubilee style bracelet. The date window is too small, I agree with you. It would have looked better as you mentioned if it was windowed. Unfortunately, mine had a stuttering second hand. I sent mine back to Starking and they fixed it for free. I just had to pay for the shipping. Now, it runs great with no stutter. I wear it pretty much everyday.
@georgechau6800
@georgechau6800 5 жыл бұрын
@Ekitriyuda The AM0184 and other Starking watches with the high beat movement may have the stuttering second hand problem. I would buy a Cadisen or a Guanqin with a Seiko or Miyota movement instead of the Starking.

Superb video Richard what i like about your channel is that you not only examine the out side of the watch but the engineering behind it. Often wondered about these Chinese moments how long will they last ? and what dose that depend on is it the quality of the materials used in its construction? Will this movement last say as long as an equivalent Seiko movement ? Suppose only time will tell haha. Regards Darren.
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren .... the difference I think between these Chinese movements and the Japanese Seikos is not so much in the materials or the tolerances in design and construction but rather the amount of quality control in the production. It's only a hunch but I figure Starking must be pretty lean on manpower involvement during manufacture in order to be on profit on volume sales. The deduction is that the risk of sudden failure will be higher on the cheaper movement but this is only my feeling and is largely an unsupported assertion. So pleased you enjoyed this video and good to hear from you as always. Thanks again. Richard

22:30 All Miyota style automatics (including this one) winding on one direction (uni-directional), even higher grade ones. Their advantage is that there is no gap during direction variations so this type of movements are more sensitive during power reserve operation.

My constructive criticism would be to have some sort of reference watch (or just a level) to compare the watches to for your scores. Not necessarily super high end, but possibly a mid-level Seiko. I would resist the urge to score them relative to the price, because it just causes the scores to be too high. Keep up with this type of video because I haven't seen anyone else doing ones like these. I like the fact that you are looking at the watches as the objects that they physically are, and not the marketing.
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Philip .... You are so right! I think the scoring would maybe benefit from being more in context. It's interesting though as why not score this against a datejust ... the datejust will win on quality but lose I guess on value for money, unless the value that the buyer perceives is in the brand not the hardware ... it's complicated. Any help getting to a clearer understanding is gratefully received. Thanks for this. Richard

I am really wondering about the possible origins of this movement. Visually it looks a bit like a Miyota 8200 series, except for a Seagull-like rotor. One-direction winding is also an attribute of the Miyota movements. A high-beat modification of a Miyota 8200 clone (ST16)? Would it be possible to modifiy a 21600 bph movement to be high beat and at what cost (money and/or longevity of the movement) ? :)

Can the amplitude be improved through a cleaning and oiling?
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hi BG ... perhaps. On a high quality, undamaged watch the answer to this question is always yes so long as the lubrication is done correctly. With a cheaper watch there is a lot more chance that something else is effecting the performance and no amount of servicing will rectify it. I hope this helps. Richard

Does this movement have lots of dirt from handling and scratches or am I seeing things?

Mr. Perrett, the kind of thing you're doing here, servicing or at least exploring a movement from a no name watch with a movement originating from China (or Japan) is something I've very interested in finding a source for. It's my impression that Chinese watches, or any watch with a Seiko NH35 movement are essentially unserviceable anywhere. Typically the Chinese builders won't service them, and US watchmakers generally will not either. Even Seiko will not service watches with their movements unless they are inside Seiko bodies. Do you know of any watchmaker who would accept a non name brand watch with say a Seiko NH35 type movement for the purpose of troubleshooting and regulating the movement, possibly even making sure it's water resistance ability is maintained? Are there any such watchmakers? All I find is specialists in the main swiss brands. I am located in the Atlanta area of Georgia, USA if that helps, but I'd be willing to send it abroad. I have a particular watch in mind but I'd also like to have a contact for a watchmaker who would be game for anything (to at least TRY). Sadly I lack the talent to try to repair things myself. Thanks.
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David .... I guess it comes down to straight economics. If a watchmaker works for $50/hour an a typical automatic watch full service takes 7 hours the job is $350. This makes an watch worth below about $500 beyond economic repair as most folks would rather spend the extra $150 for a new one. This does not apply to watches of sentimental value of course. I fear your search may be a long one! Hope this helps. Richard

The worst part about Chinese watches are the names themselves. "Pagani Design" is one of the few exceptions that I like. The tongue-twister English names on some Chinese watches are reason enough to stay away. (not Starking, but others).

I bought this watch and in hindsight, I really show have bought a Cadisen or Guanqin with the Seiko movement. The Starking movement I believe was an existing movement that was somehow converted to be high beat. Unfortunately, it has lowered the power reserve and also it has I believe caused some problems that they have yet to figure out in their quality control. My watch had a stuttering second hand and it's not an isolated instance.

Honestly, I've seen a few of these watches now, they have a really high failure rate. Flicking the wrist to view the time will often stop the movement for a second or more, a little shock can cause the hands too fall off (that's how my first order arrived), I've seen other people who have had their stem just fall out or crown pop off. Also the case in most their models are not steel, but brass coated in a mirror finish. I really wanted to like these watches, but they're just too unreliable.
@rage8kage
@rage8kage 3 жыл бұрын
I would rate the looks lower than a nine. The markers are too small. Leaving a lot of space and the watch looking big and flat. Proportionately a slightly smaller size would be better. The dial surface is also no very special. A sunburst effect or any effect could elevate it. The branding is a simple looking thing could be applied and the date wheel would be better if it's black with white writing instead. I'd give it a 7. Nothing much wrong but very generic. But at this price. Overall a 7 is a great score. Not that I see myself wearing it at all even if I have one. I wouldn't wear some random cheap metal jewelry so I wouldn't wear a cheap watch just because it's inoffensive either
