The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the most talked about teams in Major League Baseball. The start of this? A seemingly random and inconsequential rainout almost 20 years ago

Butterfly Effect: Bartolo Colon lying about his age to Cleveland, led to the Nats winning the 2019 World Series. When Cleveland was scouting Colin back in the 90s, Bartolo fudged his age by two yrs to in order to make him more appealing to the team. He would soon become the team's best pitcher. In 02, the then Expos, fearing contraction by MLB, decide to throw caution into the wind and trade their three best prospects (Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee) for Colon. The team would fail to make the postseason and the team would still be alive for a couple more years before moving to DC. And because of those traded prospects, the team was forced to blow up the team not too long after landing in DC, netting them Stephen Strasburg and Anthony Rendon in the draft, two key pieces of the 2019 championship. Had Colon been upfront about his age, its unlikely tagt Cleveland takes a flyer on him, meaning Montreal does not trade the farm for him, meaning they aren't bad enough by 08-09 to draft those players.

I was looking at a trade tree and I found something very interesting. Tommy Hanson (Drafted in the 22nd Round in 2005) was connected to the Braves winning the World Series. This is how it was done… Hanson (Drafted 22nd round , 677 pick), is traded to the Angels in 2012 for Jordan Walden. Then Walden, along side Jason Heyward is traded to the Cardinals for Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins in 2014. Shelby Miller and Gabe Speier were then traded to the Diamondbacks for Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair and Dansby Swanson. Gabe Soeier also has an interesting trade tree involving, Cameron Maybin, Melvin Upton Jr, and Craig Kimbreal. Going back to the Diamondbacks trade though, you think we would be done, right? Well no. Remember Tyrell Jenkins? Well he is involved in another pivotal trade. Him and Brady Feigl were traded to the Rangers in 2016 for Luke Jackson. That’s all I have. I bet if you did research on players from other teams that impacted these trades, it would make a fun video.

The Mets signing Tsuyoshi Shinjo in 2000 led to their playoff run in 2015. In December of 2000, the Mets signed Japanese outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo to replace Derek Bell, who had just signed with the Pirates. (On a side note, Bell and Shinjo are both very interesting people, both deserving of their own videos.) Shinjo had a decent year with the Mets and became a fan favorite, but after the season, he was traded along with infielder Desi Relaford to SF in exchange for pitcher Shawn Estes. Estes had a down year in 2002, but had a memorable moment when he threw behind Roger Clemens (in retaliation for Clemens hitting Piazza) and then homered off of Clemens in the same game. The Mets would trade Estes to the Reds in August of 2002. One of the players they received in return was left-handed pitcher Pedro Feliciano. Pedro Feliciano (RIP) would become one of the Mets' most reliable relievers for several years after. After the 2010, he would sign a deal with Yankees. Feliciano would never pitch for the Yankees because of injuries, but because of the deal he signed with the Yankees, the Mets received a compensation draft pick. With that compensation pick, the Mets selected pitcher Michael Fulmer. Fulmer would become one of the Mets' top pitching prospects, and he would be the main piece going to the Tigers in the deal that sent Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets at the 2015 trade deadline. Without acquiring Cespedes, the Mets probably don't go on their playoff run in 2015. You could even go back further on this, in the Mets not trading for Ken Griffey Jr. The Mets were close to acquiring Griffey before the 2000 season, but Griffey chose the Reds instead. If the Mets had acquired Griffey, they probably never would've signed Shinjo.
@SmoothCriminal12
@SmoothCriminal12 2 жыл бұрын
I have one that also ties into the Mets 2015 run. In 2003, The A-Rod for Manny swap also would've sent Jon Lester to Texas in the deal as well. The deal doesn't happen, and Lester becomes a star for Boston. In 2014, he's traded to Oakland for Yoenis Cespedes, who is then traded half a year later to Detroit for Rick Porcello. Another half a year later, Cespedes is traded to the Mets for Fulmer. So if Lester is traded to Texas, the Mets never get Cespedes.

I may honestly like random events causing butterfly effects more than simple trade trees. Like how that one empty net whiff-turned-opposing goal everyone memes in hockey contributed to the Blackhawks drafting Patrick Kane and becoming a dynasty. Or how the Chiefs getting devoured by penalties and handing the Jets a touchdown in a random blowout loss contributed to the Mahomes-Reid dynasty.

A fascinating side note on this is that the Rays almost didn't wind up with Chris Archer, as they were given the option between him and the Cubs other top pitching prospect at the time, Trey McNutt, and IIRC it was a lengthy decision for them to determine which one to take in the Garza deal. McNutt never was able to put up results past A ball, as he posted a 4.53 ERA in AA, and a 4.99 in his lone season up at AAA.

A fun postscript to this is that the guy the Twins used to trade for Jason Bartlett in the first place, OF Brian Buchanan, was part of the package they got from the Yankees for Chuck Knoblauch, who as we all know is one of baseball's most well known victims of 'the yips'. So in a way, the Yankees helped get the Rays to where they are today, thanks for that.

I've mentioned the Joe Mauer one before and how little things led to the Twins getting their hometown boy and how huge that was and unlikely followed by his amazing career there. BUT at 3:38 in this video it shows how the Twins likely may not have gotten him if the Cubs were able to select first! This has to have some merit to it deserving a video!!! PLEASE!

How Grady Little's managing blunder won the Cubs their first World Series in 108 years In Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, the Red Sox led the Yankees 5-2 entering the 8th inning and were on the doorstep of the fall classic, needing only 5 outs to clinch their first pennant since 1986 with Pedro Martinez on the mound. The Yankees began to rally with 1 out in the 8th, started by a Derek Jeter double to right. Jeter eventually came home on a Bernie Williams single to make it 5-3. Grady Little jogged out to the mound to check on a tiring Martinez, who told him he could get the next batter, Hidecki Matsui out. Matsui doubled and moved Williams to 3rd, and Jorge Posada blooped a 2-run single to center to tie the game up at 5-5 and send Yankee Stadium into a state of delirium. Martinez was removed, Aaron Boone went boom in the 11th, and that was that. The Red Sox had lost again. Following the conclusion of the ALCS, Little was scorched by the Boston media and the Red Sox fans for leaving a clearly tired Pedro in the game too long, and ultimately lost his job just days later due to his mistake. The Red Sox, run then by a young Theo Epstein, were still reeling from their crushing ALCS loss but looked for ways to get better and improve their 95-win team in the offseason in their quest to unseat the Yankees from atop the AL. The Yankees, meanwhile, lost the World Series at home in 6 games to the Florida Marlins, leaving George Steinbrenner steaming and irate, as he demanded better from the team and the front office heading into 2004, since it had now been 3 full seasons since the Yankees won it all in 2000 over the Mets. The Red Sox got to work immediately that offseason, engaging in trade talks with the Texas Rangers about reigning AL MVP 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez who had been seeking a trade to a number of teams, the Yankees and Red Sox each being teams he would approve a trade too. As the talks accelerated, the Red Sox put together a deal that included starting pitching prospect Jon Lester and other players that would be sent to the Rangers in exchange for A-Rod. A-Rod had to take a slight pay decrease for the deal to fit into the Red Sox budget effectively. The deal was agreed to, and all that needed to happen was for the MLB Players Association to approve the trade. But they didn't. On December 17th, the Players ruled that the trade was no good because A-Rod, then the best player in baseball, taking a pay decrease the size that the Sox had arranged would be a bad look for the Union and would set a precedent they didn't want going forward. The deal died, A-Rod wasn't going to Boston, and, more importantly, Jon Lester was staying in the Red Sox system. A few weeks later, ALCS hero Aaron Boone blew out his knee playing pickup basketball, which voided his contract and left the Yankees looking for a 3rd baseman. They got together with the Rangers at the last minute after a failed trade for Adrian Beltre with the Dodgers, and A-Rod became a Yankee. Jon Lester would not come up for the Red Sox until 2006, but played a huge role for them in the 2007 season, in which they won the World Series for the second time in 4 years after winning it all for the first time in 86 years in 2004. Lester went on to become a top starter for the Red Sox for the next several years and was apart of their 2013 championship team as well. He was a bonafide ace. In 2014, however, as the reigning World Champs, Boston was struggling mightily and shipped Lester off to the Oakland A's at the deadline who were in a tight race in the AL West. Lester started the AL Wildcard game for the A's who lost in soul-crushing fashion to the Royals. Lester entered free agency as the top starting pitcher on the market. Theo Epstein, who had built the Red Sox two World Championship teams of the 2000's, had been in Chicago for 4 years by the time 2014 ended, and had amassed a promising young core in the minor leagues with stars like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber and already had productive pieces in place like first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs were ready to make the jump from rebuilding to contention, but needed one big piece to help. Epstein was keen on Lester, having seen him develop in Boston and become a star player on the mound, and won the bidding war for Lester, overcoming teams like the reigning champion San Francisco Giants to ink the star southpaw to a 6-year, $155 million deal. The Cubs would win 97 games that season and advance to the NLCS for the first time since 2003 with Lester. The next season, Lester posted the best stats of his career, winning 19 games with a 2.94 ERA to lift the Cubs to a 103-58 record, the best in baseball. Lester was a unbelievably critical piece in the Cubs' 2016 World Series run, winning Game 1 of the NLDS against the Giants 1-0, winning co-NLCS MVP with Javier Baez, delivering a win in Game 5 of the World Series with the Cubs against the wall at home down 3-1 in the series, and delivered a clutch relief appearance in Game 7 in Cleveland to help the Cubs to their first championship in 108 seasons. Had Grady Little taken out Pedro when he should've, the Red Sox probably go to the World Series and don't try to trade for A-Rod. Had the Red Sox traded Lester in the deal for Rodriguez, the story is very different and the Cubs don't get their ace in 2015 that would help carry them to their long-awaited title. Fascinating.

Mark Fidrych, 1977, Spring Training. Falls off a fence, blows his rotator cuff. Leads to the 1987 trade that leads to the Braves dominating the 90s as well as the Tigers losing 119 games in 2003, which lead to them drafting Verlander, which leads to the insane comeback in 2006, causing owner Mike Ilitch to throw tons of money at the team before GM Dave Dombrowski inexplicably blows up the team as shown by Secret Base recently. I've mentioned this FORTY-FIVE YEAR LONG chain of events before.

Satire inspired by Butterfly Effect videos: How Delmon Young being an overall #1 MLB draft pick produced the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner. In 2010, the Washington Nationals had the 1st overall pick and chose an outfielder from a Nevada junior college. In 2013, Delmon Young played part of the season with the Phillies, for whom he hit 8 homers. In 2019, that outfielder chosen in 2010 by Washington, Bryce Harper, became a free agent and signed with the Phillies. He has hit a bunch of homers for his new team since then. Delmon Young and Bryce Harper are so far the only players to fit the criteria of 1st overall pick by a team other than the Phillies (eliminating Pat Burrell and Mickey Moniak) who eventually played for them and homered while with the team (eliminating Bill Almon and "Not That" Dave Roberts, who hit zero for the team). So that's how Delmon Harper won the 2021 Heisman Trophy. (I don't follow college football, so I may have gotten his name wrong.) Remember, the above is satire (and I do know the Heisman winner's correct name).

As well as got the Angels Mike Trout (since the Braves ended up trading Tex to LA the following season, and one of the picks they got from him leaving was used to draft Trout). Trading for Mark Teixeira turned out to be a pretty good thing to do.

This video reminds me of the idea the the 1970 Buffalo Bills losing a game on a bad pass. This loss gave them the 1st round pick where they chose OJ Simpson and met his wife. He killed his wife and the Kardashians ended up gettng famous because of it. Basically that one bad pass might've allowed OJ to kill his wife he wouldn't have met otherwise and allowing the Kardashians to become famous.

If your a GM and the rays have a trade proposal that includes a pitcher, hang up. The rays always win every trade that involves a pitcher.

You did kinda leave out the fact that Glasnow was a big part as to why the Rays went to the World Series in 2020.

A few years down the line, we’re gonna see Glasnow and/or Baz get traded for multiple good prospects like Garza and Archer before them, and the cycle will continue.

The MLB draft 1st overall rule is really dumb at the same time I assume that it suppose to reduce long-term tanking.
