Solid info! I've been selling on Etsy now for about 5 years but have recently started looking deeper into how I can tighten up my listings, keywords, and better drive traffic to my shop. I've sort of felt like I've been lobbing spaghettis at a wall for a while, and just not paying attention to this stuff at all, and not knowing what keywords have been helping / hurting my shop. I completely forgot I had eRank linked to my Etsy shop so I just recently reactivated it so I can do a more thorough deep dive. My problem is though, my niche is really hard to get good results as the keyword search is low. :( Anyway, plodding forward and loving these videos!

Thanks for this great updated info! But what will you do with a very saturated niche like wall art? All the relevant keywords I've found are super competitive! And words that are less competitive doesn't fit the tags limitation of character number... would love to get your advice on that 🙏
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
If a category or product is too saturated, you may need to narrow your way down. For example, if you create hand painted pet portrait art, you'd want to be more narrow than simply searching "Wall art". In which case, you could search "dog Wall art" or even "pet art". 🙂

LOVE your videos. One thing that has confused me about changing tags/titles was when you incorporate holidays such as what you did in your video (Mother's Day). If the item sells, rule of thumb is to not touch it - I have done that before and it tanked my item! If you are remarketing that same item for the next season/occasion and you are wanting to change the title and tags to reflect that, say for Father's Day, what will it do to the algorithm? I know not to touch anything during that 90 day period, but what about after that time frame? I assume that if it didn't sell, make some changes. If it did, leave it alone. How do you handle changing out the seasons/holidays/occasions without tanking your product? In Feb I changed a couple of tags on a product that had been selling but had slowed down - it went from being ranked on page 1 to page 3 (per eRank) and now hasn't sold at all since then. I assume I need to wait the 90 days to work on the SEO a little more. Things are slow right now, so wanted to spend some time working on making sure everything is where it needs to be which includes my tags and titles. Your video helps A LOT!
@Ruta_andr2 ай бұрын
thanks so much for your videos! How often should I change my title, keywords, descriptions and tags on my Etsy? Only every 60-90 days?
@StarlaMoore2 ай бұрын
Yes, I would not touch your keywords for at least 60 days and 90 days is even better. You need to give them time to work through the Etsy algorithm. Also, when you do change them, I suggest using eRank's Track Changes so that you will know what works.

Question...for tags...as an example I've found a lot keywords for things like, travel shirt, vacation shirt, outdoorsy shirt.... in our tags could/should we just do something like "outdoorsy shirt" then "travel vacation" in another so we can get the broad matching instead of repeating the word "shirt" over and over? Does that make sense??
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
You absolutely can! This is exactly what I do. Exact match for whichever of those terms has the highest searches and lowest competition if possible. Then group the other two together so you can broad match them. 🙂

Yes! I needed this. Thank you. Question: should my superstar keyword be in the begging of the title and how many super star keywords do you recommend? I am using all 140 characters to maximize my keywords and have broken my title up into three sections
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
A superstar keyword should be the term that describes EXACTLY what your item is. The order of your title doesn't matter for search, however, you should attempt to make sure you lead with your superstar keyword since this term should ideally be visible right away to shoppers on a search page. Superstar keywords have no specific ideal quantity BUT since your superstar keyword should define what your "item is", it's unlikely that you'll have more one or two. Not every keyword needs to be a superstar keyword. 🙂

You say for exact matching a keyword, it's needs to be in both your title AND tags. But If I have 'chunky knit blanket' in just my title, that's not considered an exact match with a buyer's search for 'chunk knit blanket' if it's not also in my tags?

Can I add tags even if it's not related in my products? For example selling digital products wedding invitations, can I add tag for acrylic wedding invitation or passport invitations?
@StarlaMoore9 ай бұрын
I wouldn't. You won't be targeting the types of customers who are actually looking for your products. If someone were to click your listing, only to realize it isn't an "acrylic wedding invitation", this could technically cause you to begin ranking lower in search. Instead of trying to target as many "types" of wedding invitations as possible, try focusing on the buyers themselves. If the digital invitations are decorated with flowers, could they appeal to those planning "cottagecore" weddings? What season are they getting married? What are the wedding colors? These are all significantly more relevant terms. Remember. "Relevancy" is key. If the keyword is not "relevant", you shouldn't use it.

Question - does changing the listing photos reset the SEO for Etsy so you start from scratch?
@StarlaMoore10 ай бұрын
Nothing "resets the listing's SEO". This isn't really the correct terminology for what takes place when a listings tags and titles are adjusted. But to answer your question, images have zero impact on the algorithm. 😊 The areas you won't want to touch are your tags and titles of listings that are already selling well. For new listings, you'll just want to make sure you're giving Etsy time to identify what you want to be known for. Editing a listing does not "reset" it. When adding new keywords, you're giving Etsy a list of new terms you want to be known for - and it can take Etsy a bit of time to assess these terms and decide, based on those terms, who they should show your listing to. 60 to 90 days is a good period of time to allow new keywords to settle because this average timeframe ensure that Etsy has time to assess your listing - AND as a seller, you have an appropriate amount of data collected after 60 to 90 days in order to decide if the terms you selected are working for your listing.

What is the difference between tags and keywords?
@StarlaMooreАй бұрын
Great question! Tags and keywords often get confused, but they serve different purposes on Etsy. Here’s a breakdown to help clarify: What Are Keywords? Keywords are what your customers type into Etsy’s search bar when they’re looking for products. For example, if someone searches for "canvas tote bag," that phrase is the keyword they’re using to find what they want. What Are Tags? Tags, on the other hand, are part of your Etsy listing’s metadata-information you provide specifically for Etsy’s search engine, not for your customers. Tags help Etsy understand what your item is, so it knows where and how to display your listing in search results. How Tags and Keywords Work Together: While tags and keywords aren’t the same thing, they do overlap. Etsy’s search engine gives more weight to tags that exactly match a keyword. For example: If a shopper searches for "canvas tote bag," a listing with a tag that says "canvas tote bag" will likely rank higher than one with "tote bag canvas" or "canvas tote" as separate tags. However, Etsy’s algorithm is smart-it can mix and match words from your tags, title, attributes, and categories to match a shopper’s search. So, if you have "canvas tote" as one tag and "messenger bag" as another, your listing could still appear for a search like "canvas bag." The Key Takeaway: Keywords: What customers type into search. Tags: What sellers use to help Etsy’s algorithm understand their listings. Both are important for Etsy SEO, and optimizing your tags to align with relevant keywords can help your listings rank higher in search results! Let me know if you have any other questions-I’m happy to help. 😊

@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
There is no magic number. First, I would evaluate why the listing isn't selling. Are you getting views and no sales? Or no views and no sales? If you are getting views and no sales, it may something such as your photos or description. Look at competitors and see how yours compare. If you are getting no views as well, look at your SEO. Also, it takes time for a listing to gain momentum. Be sure to drive traffic to your shop through social media and not just depend on organic Etsy traffic. And this time of year is slow on Etsy for everyone! f you haven't already, be sure to grab all of the free Etsy and marketing resources and mini courses that I offer! Maybe a silly question. Does ERank only work for Etsy or is there an option to also use for say a Shopify or other site? I assume the SEO keywords and tags would basically be the same. But does it have an option for outside of Etsy too?
@StarlaMoore5 ай бұрын
eRank includes keyword data for several other sites and platforms. For Shopify, it would be Google keywords that you need to research, which eRank does have Google keyword data. At this time, you can only connect your actual shop if it's an Etsy shop so you want have all the listing audit data and stuff like that. But definitely check out their keyword data for other sites. When in the Keyword Tool, click the drop down where it says Etsy and choose which site you want. The Trend Reports also include data for other sites and platforms.

Starla, wat I always ask myself... 'exact matching', is it so that the keyword ideas that we see on Erank are indeed exact matching terms? Cause in the end, we don't really know what customers are looking for, do we? Isn't it always a guess? I think I could figure out two words, like 'digital download', but anything that's longer, is always hard to find for my listings, so I think I rely more on broad matching, but not sure if that's bringing me the right amount of traffic of course...
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you mean. Those terms ARE what customers are searching for. You have to remember that customers tend to not be super specific in their searches. They search, refine, search again, refine, etc. 🙂 Feel free to let me know if I've missed something. I may just be tired.

Digital and physical can absolutely be in the same shop. Instead of looking at the "type of item", think more about the "type of customer". If your target audience is the same for your digital and physical items, it would make sense for these items to be together. For example, if your target audience is "guitar players", it would make sense to have clothing for guitar players in a shop along side printable sheet music or even printable art because the target audience is the same. When it comes to your SEO, think more about the commonalities of your niche and the signals you're sending to Etsy, based on your items "all together". This is why having a defined niche is important, especially now, with Etsy being more saturated than ever. We have data to support that general shops simply do not perform the same as shops with defined niches. Digital products is not a niche... it's an industry. Physical products is not a niche... it's an industry. Shirts, mugs, and stickers are not niches.... they are all industries. So think about what your NICHE is or how you can move closer to forming one so that Etsy can gather clear clues about what you want your shop to be known for. You can learn more about this topic, as well as the data that supports several of my statements, in this video from a few months ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4rOc4V5ed-embs

Such great tips and made so easy to understand! Best SEO vid I watched. Thank you! Funny that this totally goes against what "Dylan Jahraus" says about titles... But I trust you more! Her titles are stuffed tighter than a sushi roll.

Is there any way to know your Etsy quality score for your listing after the 99 day period?
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately there is no way to know your quality score. This is a metric Etsy does not share. But it can be FELT. Have you ever sold and item, then soon afterwards, you make a sale for the exact same item? That's your quality score growing! 🙂

Hello, is this the only platform in the world that charges you to list a product?
@StarlaMoore8 ай бұрын
All platforms have some kind of fee-whether it's upfront or part of the overall fee.

@@StarlaMoore Yes, all platforms charge fees on sales, which is normal, however the platforms do not ask you to pay to list our products. ? Etsy is very expensive since it's 20 cents and it's only 10 or 20 free ads?

Can we duplicate titles and tags on duplicate items?
@StarlaMoore11 ай бұрын
Are you talking the exact same item duplicated or a different similar item? Either way, the answer is yes. However, if you are duplicating the exact same item, that is usually done for A/B testing, which means that there is something different you are trying with the second listing.

Thank you for this info - just so I understand - you are saying it doesn't matter if we have commas or dashes between our long-tail keywords - Etsy will STILL broad match up any word with any other word in the WHOLE title ? This is great, if true !

Yes, that is correct. The punctuation within the title does not effect broad matching
