Counting down the days till 'The Deltic Deviation' on May 7th. The charter train, starting from Finsbury Park and then two further calling points at Stevenage and Peterborough will whizz through Grantham on its way to York, Durham and Newcastle and return. I will get up close with the trains on the East Coast mainline including new operator, Lumo. An Azuma train to Inverness is featured here and speaking of Inverness, the same operator of 'The Deltic Deviation' and 'The Electric Scot' in late January returned to Scotland with 'The Clansman' railtour from London Euston just this past weekend. Grantham was the home town of the first female Prime Minister between 1979-1990. When I was born in 1981, she was in power.

I will have to look into the Deltic Railtour! I won’t be travelling on it but it would be awesome to film it at speed 😃 I wonder why it won’t start from London Kings Cross? 🤔Have fun!

Grantham railway station is on the East Coast Main Line in the United Kingdom, serving the town of Grantham, Lincolnshire. It is 105 miles 38 chains (169.7 km) down the line from London King's Cross and is situated on the main line between Peterborough to the south and Newark North Gate to the north. Two secondary lines diverge from the main line north of Grantham: the "Poacher Line" to Skegness and a branch line to Nottingham. Its three-letter station code is GRA.

There were a couple of good shots in this video that I could have used such as Lumo. But in the end, I had to use the Mk4 DVT since it was almost identical to the video thumbnail I used 5 years ago!

Great video 🤩🎉👍🏽 I see ‘bad practice’ in place on the ECML compared to GWR with the Hitachi AT300 units 🤔 It looks like LNER drivers still think they are driving 225 sets with a 91 because lots of northbound and southbound services with Azuma’s have the front driving end pantograph down with trains being propelled by the rear pantograph i.e. LNER drivers do not appear to be swapping driving end pantographs on a trains turn around like GWR drivers do on the WR 🤔 most odd...not good practice either, as one pantograph will wear out much quicker than the other one which is hardly being used 🤨

Thanks EJC! Interesting point you made about pantographs. I believe that the reason for use of the rear one on the ECML is so that drivers have time to drop the pantograph if an obstruction on the OLE is seen. This is the same practice as on the WCML. I'm not sure why its not the case on the Western Region..

@@StarlifeStudios ah I see...interesting policy there? 🤔 The only main difference between the GWR Catenary and the ECML Catenary is the GWR system seems far more robust with big, chunky, solid supports (very much like the WCML) and big cantilevers & gantries for the wires, unlike most of the ECML (which was wired between 1988-1991 as cheaply as possible under BR using a different system) which would and often does, make it more prone to problems with OLE equipment 🤨

This is one of the many points where trains that don’t stop always pass at 125 MPH. Sometimes it feels like there is a lot of speed bumps on this line! (Not here)

I live in a village called ancaster, a brief 15 minute drive or 10 minute train ride from here. Tomorrow I'll be hopping on an LNER azuma for the first time and going to London for my birthday!

Even though Grantham is mostly served with LNER, East Midlands Railway and sometimes Hull Trains. Grantham is a nice place to visit and the Cathedral is massive. Maybe LNER could add more services such as to Harrogate, Scarborough, Cleethorpes, Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe. And Lumo Class 803 and Grand Central Class 180 Adelantes just goes right past.

Class 800s have a weird bogie layout. Some cars have normal bogies while some cars have inbound bogies with wheels on the outside like on the aventra trains. Anybody know why?

So the normal 'Full' bogies are motor bogies and the inbound 'slim' bogies are trailer non-powered coaches. Hope this answers your question RR.
