Ive just found out this is reopening in London next year which prompted me to look Starlight up... it was my favourite when I was a child and I cant wait to see it again!

It's so far from the original version, that it's almost unrecognizable. ALW and the creative team kept tinkering with it, dropping and changing songs and characters. They ripped out its original heart and soul, and turned it into a load of sound and fury, signifying nothing but a pursuit of ticket-sales.

Looks awful from what I've seen so far. Not a patch on the Napier/Nunn/Phillips productions. Guess they had a much tighter budget.

You won't see it again. Hardly anything of the original show remains. Even the basic story is different because good guys and bad guys aren't PC. Characters have been re-written or just dropped completely. Many songs have been removed and new songs that don't fit have been crowbarred in. The race sequences haven't been live for a long time. The only place you will ever see a version that's reasonably close to the original show is Bochum.

@@guypainter and even the current Bochum show is radically different since 2018. Lots of songs swapped out for more awful pop tunes. The soul is gone sadly.

@@oakboundstudio Sorry to hear that. I haven't seen it in Germany for seven or eight years and didn't know it had changed that much. I'd love to ask those responsible to explain the logic of "updating" a story about a steam engine.

I saw Starlight Express when it debuted in Las Vegas, NV back in The 90's at the Old Las Vegas Hilton. It was one of the most magical nights of my life! Hope I get to see it again sometime. If anyone gets a chance to see this show I highly recommend it. No matter if you are or young, you are in for a magical moment in time. I can still see the "trains" roller skating throughout the audience. They were above us, behind us and skating through us in our seats. What fun. I saw the original show in London in the opening week, and I've seen many versions in several locations. Due to some obsession with keeping it "current", whatever that's supposed to mean, they just kept making senseless changes, and every change was for the worse. For example, when Stephanie Lawrence (the original Pearl) left the show, they wrote her big solo number "Only He" out of the show because her replacement *couldn't sing it!* Pathetic.
