Emmy Rossum was a fantastic choice for Christine. Her and Sierra Bogess are my favourite, because they both capture the innocence and sweetness of the character. Many times the part of Christine is sung in a legit soprano style, but I think it makes sense for Christine to sound young and inexperienced, as she is a singer with immense potential, but is only at the start of her career.
@kevinwilson3609Ай бұрын
So you basically don't understand the story that after being tutored by the Phantom, she is meant to be a revelation as a great singer, not a young and inexperienced one who basically can't hit the notes in places. Musicals, especially operatic ones like this, need real singers to sing the melodies as emotion is through the music. She and Butler were very poor choices in terms of singing.

@@kevinwilson3609 I can maybe see your opinion for Gerard...but CHRISTINE?? Emmy Rossum is a revelation as a great singer, but she was still 17 during the filming. The role of Christine is supposed to be a young, sweet, and innocent role. Emmy Rossum's voice was so advanced, just not abrasive. For the broadway productions, it didnt matter so much If the actor was actually young because the audience isn't up in the performance like a movie is. idk if that makes sense, I just think that Emmy was flawless.

@@kevinwilson3609 I swear, people justifying casting those two will never not bemuse me. If he could sing at all, he would have been a better choice, but she's barely an actor let alone singer. Her singing voice has no tone quality or body to it, and 'deer in headlights' is not an acing choice. Continue to preach that truth. They were wrong casting choices, period. The whole point is that, yes, Christine is a revelation and a new sound but still can hold her own against La Carlotta. Carlotta is supposed to be well renowned and famous, and be paranoid about this new voice on the scene that could usurp her. What about Emmy's voice is supposed to worry Carlotta about losing her top dog spot at the opera? Like, please, it's a joke if we're supposed to believe that.

You can hear the autotune and pitch correction in every song Emma sings, making her sound almost mechanical. Also, and this is probably me reading too far into things, but casting Emma as Belle kinda felt pigeon-hole-esque considering that Belle is a singing, less magicky (as in personally) version of Hermione. Obviously not the same story plot in the slightest, but the personal qualities and behaviours are very similar: A super smart girl that is a "weird" book worm, doesn't act like the rest of her peers, and has a semi-short temper - especially when it comes to those she cares about... Phantom was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. I was 17. I was mesmerized through the entire production. I couldn't wrap my head around what I was witnessing. All I knew was that I was hooked. After the show, I purchased the CD set and listened to it non-stop for months. I've seen other Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, but this one will always be my favorite. This film came out 10 years after I initially saw it on Broadway and I couldn't imagine it giving me the same kind of mesmerizing feelings as I'd had seeing it on Broadway as a teenager. Boy, was I wrong!!! I ended up watching this in the theaters 5 times and digging out my CD set so that I could stay immersed again for a long while and as soon as it was released to DVD, I purchased it and watched it on repeat. It's hard to believe this masterpiece has now been something I've enjoyed for 30 years! I would've loved to have seen it again on Broadway before its closure but I wasn't lucky enough to. I still have plenty of opportunities to watch the film and listen to the music, and I'll never tire of doing it.

I loved that Emmy was the same age as Christine, she has a beautiful voice and played her to perfection. Appreciating movie Christine doesn’t take away from Brightman or any other Christine. Butler was the right choice for a movie Phantom. Appreciating his vocals and presence doesn’t take away from Crawford or any other Phantom. Butler is a man you take a second look at when he walks by…and Phantom needs that charisma to coax Christine into the shadows.
