Your home is surrounded by tall trees, yet 300ft away is an open field where you can place Dishy. Can and should you run a cable to the field for the best line of sight?
This is a question we've heard a lot out there, installing internet over the years it is certainly a situation we've run into. There is no cookie cutter answer for everybody's problems but there is a list of possible solutions to try. If you can, it is always best practice to use Starlinks supplied parts, which unfortunately limits you to 100ft range from the dishy to the power pack. If you're looking to extend this range a few options we have tested and have worked, but are pushing the limits and possibly compromising the life expectancy of the equipment.
If you can't find a clearing within the 100ft range of the cable then you can look at either extending the cable or setting up point to point links if you have power. Running an extended cable will be the only option for some, so we tested out to see how far we could go with an extension. Let's break down how we completed our testing and get the results. First up is cabling and the type that will work best.

Any info about how to actually extend the cable? Btw the cutesy little edits about football fields, Big Ben and such are really annoying when just trying to find info/solutions for crappy internet. Unnecessary and take up time and bandwidth to download. Thanks

Thanks for posting this video! I have recently been running into an issue with my dish rebooting. I have the round beta version 1. I have the attached 100 feet of ethernet and then I added roughly 30-40 feet to it. Starlink tech support is suggestion that when the dish goes into snow mode and requires more wattage, the extra ethernet I added is to much and I'm getting voltage drop and the dish then reboots. What are your thoughts?
@AllMediaServices1
@AllMediaServices1 2 жыл бұрын
We only had a reboot issue once that we know of) with a 200ft cable…but our climate is quite cool. There are a few things you could try, 1st step is use the best cable you can get, I’ve seen a lot of cheap cables causing issues. 2nd would be to make sure your power pack has room to breath with air flow going over it. Even running a small computer fan is perfect if you can. This power pack is what over heats with long line runs, mine was hot to the touch with the 200ft run. 3rd would be to turn off dishy heater in the app, if you live in a warm enough climate then this is a must to save power as well. 4th would be to go wireless, although hardwire is always the best, 5G boosters/extenders are not to far behind if set-up properly. Just a few thoughts, hope this helps.

@@AllMediaServices1 Thank you for the advice! I didn't think of the power pack over heating. Mine does get hot to the touch and is stuck in a cabinet.

So did you use just use a single line with no other power source? Because I tried on my cutting my gen 2 cable and running a length of about 250 ft and I got the boot, reboot thing when trying to do a speed test or anything else. The drain wires is supposed to be connected to house ground from splice connection at house and left off at the dishy connection, right?

I want to have the Dishy about 300 or so feet from the house. I have power out there that I can build a box and put the modem. What is the best way to get the signal to the house without loosing to much signal?

@All Media Services Since this is a 5 month old video I'm not sure if you will actually see this or not but if you do, I could definitely use some help. So I'm trying to extend my Dishy V1 Ethednet Cable. I bought 150' Cat6 cable & just some weatherproof Ethernet Couplers. When all linked together I get nothing from my Starlink. Should that setup work? Or do I need to use a Ethernet Surge Protector like you used? I also was looking at PoE Extenders. I just don't know what to use and I don't want to waste more and more money buying things I don't need or don't work.

Hello Locozilla, you should be able to but up the connections. We have another fella that did this in our blog and placed some pictures. The big things is that the connections need to be chacked and double checked that they are in the proper order. So I'm in the woods now, found the ideal spot for my Gen1 dishy and i need to extend my Dishy cable by about 140ft. If I buy 150ft cat6 and an outdoor cat6 coupler should I be ok?
@AllMediaServices1
@AllMediaServices1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jean-Paul, yes you should be ok. We extended 200ft and works fine, just make sure to keep the power pack(brick) cool with air flow as it’s working twice as hard now.

Hello Jim, we have an blog on this www.starlinkcommunityforums.com/post/cable-extension-for-starlink-300ft-test check it out for more info. Cat6A Cabling is definitely the highest rated, go with a name brand and not a cheaper in house brand. Hopefully soon we will have our online store up and running, will be selling everything that we've tested. Cheers:)

So does it improve,in anyway, if you shorten the cable? I intend to shorten it , as I only need about 50 ft. And it came with about a miles worth!

Will standard POE cable ends/plugs work? Or does Starlink use their on weird unique plugs?
@AllMediaServices1
@AllMediaServices1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David, it depends on your system, 1st Gen system use all standard Cat connections, 2nd Gen uses a proprietary connection with the system and an additional ethernet adapter is needed. This being said I'm not sure what your trying to do as there is a lot of work arounds that people have been figuring out...we used a Poe network switch to power the Dishy router in a couple of applications now and it is working just fine.

Hey I’m planning on splicing 2nd gen 75ft cable and adding cat5e so that it will be approx 250-300 foot total. Question is will that work? Or do I need something to push more power to the dish? Hope that makes sense.

Hey Joesph, I don’t know anybody that has spliced the line. Let me know how it works out. If you stay under 300ft you should be fine for powering up the POE. Although I would be looking into an M2 Loco by Ubiquity and bridging another router. I did this in my detached garage through multiple brick and stucco walls, has been working really well for the past month.

Unfortunately the only way to have more cable with the Gen 2 is by ordering a longer one from their store. They went ahead and put a proprietary end on the Gen 2 cabling (not just a standard Ethernet connector) so it can’t be extended.

Not our intention to mislead, sorry you feel that way. This was more of an informational video than it was an installation video. If you check out our grounding video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4HJZnqieJx0mdE we use a surge suppressor to ground the Dishy which can also be used for extending Cat cable (if that’s what you are looking for).
