Starlink Roam No Longer Available in Africa

I put my second set (Gen3) into operation in Ghana around 10 days ago and was able to activate it with the ROAM Unlimited Service Plan. Since I travel a lot in the country, the ROAM plan gave me more flexibility, especially in places where mobile reception is not possible at all. I find it strange that Starlink changes the service plans or even removes them completely from the program without any information to the customer. One assumption would be that the availability of Starlink is being restricted, especially in African conflict zones. But what about Starlink users who, for example, travel through Africa with a Starlink Mini (assuming availability)? They would then also be affected by this because they would then not be able to use the Starlink service?

I noticed recently that you can longer select the 50GB plan for $50 a month when ordering the Roam Standard Kit. I was able to select the 50GB plan in early October before the $299 deal ended.

Yep that was also a recent policy change. There is a workaround, though. You can switch to the 50GB plan 30 days after activation on the Unlimited plan.

African Resident here (and Starlink Authorized Retailer too) - Starlink cut off all Kits on roaming that had exceeded the 60-Day Fair Usage Roaming Period. No doubt those that are not yet at 60 Days will cut off once they do reach it...

@@StarlinkHardware Yes, literally thousands. I'm a Retailer for Malawi and Zimbabwe, so can speak from my own knowledge and market. Many received messages to say they should return their Kits to the registered countries to reactivate them, but with Roaming removed, the only option is Residential in the Home Country. No official response from our Starlink Reps either, but I am wondering if they will make roaming in Africa only for the Country of Registration - they'd be crazy to eliminate the plan completely at this point of their growth in the market... That said, updates on the Website are random and untimed so its anybody's guess how it returns and it what form or timeline...

@@tayteashworth2521 At the moment Harare is at Capacity, it can't take anymore registrations whether residential or roaming. You'll likely have to wait for Starlink to increase capacity and unlock cells in Harare for it to take a new subscription from you. At the moment Starlink isn't saying when that capacity will be increased...

I am from Nigeria, Starlink monthly plan is too expensive, both the satellite dish, the satellite dish is not the problem, it is the residential plan, it was 38,000 before, now it is 75,000 Nigeria naira for the monthly plan, which is a huge jump 😢 many of my friends who used Starlink before have quite.

I think this has to do with the capacity or lack thereof in Africa. That's why in some areas it appears sold out.

Assumption is that Starlink underestimated demand and didn’t place enough satellites in the region. Current speeds are now averaging 11-15mb/s for congested areas. Starlink clearly are trying to manage their inability to provide proper service by cancelling roaming services.
