Superman is a great person, but often a less than great character exactly because of that: not having flaws makes him difficult to make him interesting in writing since hardly any source of conflict can't be internal, but external, and people have a hard time relating to the scale of his powers, fights, and enemies too.

@@Steflora That's not really internal conflict since it's driven by external factors causing superficial turmoil, it's never authentic internal turmoil because he's basically lost his whole planet and race (I know, not all of them), or because his literally an alien different from anyone else, or any other problem with his existence, identity, or persona. There's no introspection. Essentially, he's a well-adjusted mature individual with no insecurity, virtually no profound uncertainty since he always knows what's right, and only ever conflicted about two objectively right things excluding one another. It's like seeing the dynamic embodiment of Kant's or some other philosopher's writings on ethics. It's hard for people to relate to because it's so far removed from the average person's experience. A paragon of morality such as superman simply isn't compelling as a driving force of drama within a narrative, so the drama is always external.

I love Superman so much. As a kid, whenever I have bad days I’d imagine a lot of negative things I can do with his superpowers, but then get reminded that Superman always uses his powers for good, even though he’s already capable enough to destroy planets. He doesn’t kill people who treat him like shit even though he already has the ability to do so. He endures everything mentally, restraining himself from using his powers for bad and letting nothing to corrupt his humanity. That’s why he’s such a cool character. That’s why he’s the beacon of hope.

Y'know, that's what makes superman the greatest. Take away his flight, his super strength, his laser eyes, he's still superman. Because we trust him not because he's the strongest, but because he's the country boy from Kansas with a heart of gold. His humanity and his desire to help is what makes him superman. And so, when you go out of your way to help someone, because you can, that right there is what makes you closer to superman than his powers or lineage. Superman's greatest asset is something each and every one of us has too.

For me, I see Superman as the man I look up to but can't ever actually be; sort of the "aim for the moon, miss and land among the stars" type of hero. Spiderman is the ACTUAL hero I truly try to aspire to be. Not always on point, sometimes things just suck, but as he himself once said... "You always have a choice." Both are still prominent figures in my mind, even if they're just fictional.
