Thank you for the video , from your documentary I gain understanding that the real battle in WW2 is in eastern front. This doesnt mean I dont respect the western front.

When I was a kid, my parents took me to see the Normandy invasion beaches, where Operation Overlord took place in June 1944. I was awed at the technology involved and the sheer numbers of men involved both on land, on the sea and in the air. For many years, I did not pay much attention to the Eastern Front of WW2 because it seemed less fascinating. As I grew into an adult I started reading books and viewing films and videos about the Eastern Front and I started to appreciate it more and more. Soon I learned that when compared in scale, the invasion and fighting on and after "D-Day" seemed like a scouting trip compared to the mass slaughter and destruction on the Eastern Front. And I understood why the peoples of the Soviet Union called it their Great Patriotic War.

Soviet pilots, after hard knocks in the beginning,were I believe as good as any the war. In the Korean War, pilots from the Soviet Union flying MiG !5 had I have read, a three to two victory edge over US pilots, flying maybe a superior or at least more technically advanced F86 Sabre Jet. Great video! Thank you.

The Mig 15 and F86 Sabre were about equally matched. So the difference in aerial combat depended on the skills of the pilots flying them.

In my opinion, the main reason why air aces on both sides racked up so many kills, was that most their kills were green, inexperienced pilots. At the start of the war, German aces were hunting and killing lots of green Soviet pilots. Near the end of the war, the tables had turned: Soviet aces were hunting and killing lots of green German pilots. That is why during that last air battle, a small number of Soviet fighters could engage and turn away a much superior (in numbers only) German force. The remaining German pilots had a simple choice, continue the fight and be shot down in seconds, or ditch their bombs and flee back home, flying low above the ground. It was extremely rare for a ace pilot to engage in combat with an enemy ace pilot and then continue untill the death of one or both of them. Both pilots would realize this wasn't an easy kill and if they just survived and return home, they would live to fight another day. Just getting shot down because of 'honour' was not an option.

Ivan Kozhedub was also credited with shooting down a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter, making him one of the several fighter pilots during WWII to achieve this extraordinary feat.

He also had to shoot down 2 P-51s of the US at the end of the war. They somehow mistook him for a Fw 190 and attacked first. The grave mistake for them.
