A few years ago Mark Rutte (PM Netherlands) travelled with us on our plane. He waited in the same lounge as the passengers, took the same bus and queued with everyone else. He purchased an economy ticket but paid extra for the emergency exit with the additional legroom. The cabin crew didn’t know what their Premiere looked like, bless them, but once they knew who he was they wanted to upgrade him to Business Class and arrange a limo pick-up at the destination. I told them that under no account was he to get any special treatment. If he wanted it he would have paid for it. Also, if our airline wanted us to do anything extra they would have told us. Mr Rutte was not asking to be treated differently, he didn’t expect it and nor was he sending a message - neither were we. How simple. However, I suppose when you have deliberately and very carefully crafted a persona that is despised and disliked by so many people like Starmer has, you must do all you can whenever you can to reinforce your negative image. Why do that? As PM it's probably a security risk to go on it when other people are around. If so have it opened half an hour early and then go on it, paying an extra to the staff yourself, or quee up chatting to those around you.

The only way he can redeem himself is through personal revelation followed by a no frills confession: “ Mistreated members of the public I realise I am devoid of empathy and any theory of mind and exquisitely entitled and grand. I’ve been made to realise how gross and selfish my behaviour is. I hope I can address this ugly truth. If I can then maybe I can reclaim your trust and hopefully stay in power and lead this great Party of mine into victory at the next general election. And look this isn’t a popularity competition. Politics is a tough difficult job about all the really difficult decisions and I have a very busy schedule and sometimes the best course of action involves the toughest decisions of all. Happy New Year. Let’s forge ahead together as one no matter how you self identify because everyone should be included.”

Reminds me of 2Jags Prescott driving up the M1 with Blair. Encountering tailbacks, he moved on to the hardshoulder and sped off. At least Blair had the nous to slide down in his seat muttering "John, what the hell you doing?" As for Starmer, it highlights how out of touch he is. A Bureaucrat working in the basement doesn't notice the building falling down, nor can he look out of the window. He needs the holiday for his vitamin D replenishment.

It's a terribly small detail I know and it's one of those annoying facts which spoils a good story BUT...... Starmer did not himself push to the front of the queue. His children were put on the ride while the PM and his security drove to the bottom of the hill to collect them.
