Starmer Wants NATO Members To Hike Defence Spending But UK Hasn't Met Its Own Goal Of 2.5% GDP Spend

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls on other NATO allies on July 11 to increase their defense spending. In his first international summit speech since becoming Britain's prime minister last week, Starmer says his government will create a roadmap to reach 2.5% of GDP on defense spending, but he has not yet set a timetable for this goal.
At the NATO summit in Washington, he mentions that 23 out of the 32 members in the alliance are now spending 2% of GDP on defense. He emphasizes that due to the serious threats to security, they need to go further.
An analysis published in April by the previous Conservative government shows that NATO-qualifying British defense spending is expected to be 2.32% of GDP in the 2024-2025 financial year.
During a press conference after his statement, Starmer is asked about U.S. President Joe Biden mistakenly referring to Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskiy as Russian President Vladimir Putin before correcting himself at the NATO summit. Starmer praises Biden's role in organizing and leading what he describes as a successful NATO meeting.
