I'll show you how to reinforce the grommets so that they don't tear out of the tarp and ruin it. It's cheap, less than $15, and you'll get a lot more life out of your canopy.

Shouldn't you put the tape first then tap a hole then place the grommet? not the other way around.

He reinforced a already installed grommet. He didn’t install any new grommets.

Sure, if he had a choice, which he did not.

Just curious how did this work for you? Is there anything you would do differently in hind sight?

This looks like a fantastic idea. I just bought a brand new canopy and one of the grommets pulled right out without putting excessive tension on it. I live in sunny Florida I’m curious if the weather here would be too hot for the gorilla tape in direct sun. Will it curl and pull loose. So far this looks like the best solution that I have found. It makes me wonder why the manufacturer doesn’t do this or something similar.

It's all about $$$$$. Cheaper usually wins out. Too bad...

Thank you for this excellent video. I live in a very small village in Guatemala, and I want to reinforce grommets in a tarp using only materials I can buy in this village. I can not buy the tape you show here, but can buy packaging tape. Will packing tape also work to reinforce grommets. I only need to reinforce grommets for a short period of time, like a few months, and this will be for new grommets I am installing, not pre-existing grommets.

How did it work for you? Did you install tape first, then grommets?

Lol, I got the same kit, appreciate the video

Why didnt you just make the tape wider to have it even stronger rather than making it stop half way . 🤔🤔

Your taking the temper out of your hole punch, its gonna dull real easy now.
@StarOfCA5 жыл бұрын
If you don't heat it beyond it's critical temp, approx. 1300 F for high-carbon steel, it won't undergo a phase transition (e.g. from ferrite to austenite) and thus when it cools it doesn't anneal. Annealing is the process that you're referring to that would take the temper out of the punch and cause it to get dull more easily; i.e. it would be a softer steel. You can gauge the temperature of heated steel by it's color... try to keep it under a dull red color and you won't exceed its critical temperature. Thanks for the comment.

@Sma 556 Yes, I agree with you about just using a nail or something, but I am also laughing to myself. Like, do you really think China spent money to "harden" that punch! LOL! It's probably just regular steel that has been sharpened! I also wondered if flashing for roofs would work, it's sticky, thick, etc, then cover it with some tape. I just bought a $39.95 harbor freight tarp for a tent and with the wind whipping, it ripped the corner grommet out, but the little tiny rope inside the seam also broke so I was wondering how to make the perfect tarp. Also when i re-tied the tarp with a different grommet (away from the corner) the tarp material actually ripped. So thats a weak point too. This was the6 mil tarp I think, instead of the 4, they also offered 9 mil or something. So you pay for what you get.

If your really concerned then when your done reheat it and dip it in cold water. It will be nice and tempered. Probably brittle now because it’s so thin

WTF .. .. .. My cat mumbling even better. Can you comment your video as second sound track then mix it, mate?

I didn't understand a thing you mumbled! You need practice in many areas! That's a lot of work for something that isn't any better when you are done!
