First time seeing the Faye patent. Very cool and definitely a time saver. So much of our life on this rock is wasted due to all of the time thieves that rob a few seconds here or a minute there. I'm certain Mr. Faye hated time thieves as much as I do.

This is the only channel that I watch regularly that has NO UN-BOXING AND NO COMMERCIALS. That is fantastic. I like the Faye style best, as you indicated, very elegant in design. I think I have one old Starrett caliper that was in my father in laws tools, very rusty but hangs on my wall beside my lathe.

Glad you are feeling better!! I think the caliper that was curved and straight is called a hermaphrodite caliper. Although most I have seen or used were more even on the leg lengths.

The hermaphrodite calipers I have seen have a removable scriber tip in the straight arm for scribing lines a set distance from an edge, like scribing a line parallel to the edge of a tabletop to mark a location for an inlay.

I think a hermaphrodite caliper has a straight and a curved leg but this is not one. The hermaphrodite is like the friction caliper and can be outside measuring in the form shown on the table - or the curved leg can be swung around and become an inside caliper. I’ll say, that to justify the name, it goes both ways and not say anything else to keep this PG.🙂

I have no Machining experience but my grandpa and step dad did and I admired them. Thanks for sharing your hobby and education to help me learn about these tools. VERY interesting. Of course, this video caused me to rush to my workshop to look at the collection of calipers from my father, seven of them. They are nearly all the Yankee style, but made by Lufkin. There is one of the Toolmaker style, but it is a Craftsman brand--all of them purchased in the early 1940's. Thanks for the video--piqued my interest.

I'm a wood turner (mostly resins) as opposed to a machinist so I use calipers all the time. I have some Starrett Yankee style (though I didnt know that until I watched this!) along with a lot of random brands, hand-me-downs and estate sale finds. So I found this a very interesting video.

Starrett is a great company. About 15 yrs. Ago I sent them a email asking if I could buy a wall chart. They sent me five charts for free! .... always enjoy your video presentations.

I just found a Starrett 73 divider while excavating by some railroad tracks. Don’t know how long it’s been there but I cleaned it and oil it and it still works. Thanks for the video. Jim

HI Mr Pete,, when I was a Starrett toolmaker apprentice about 1964 I got the job of making all the bending jigs for the complete range of toolmakers calipers and dividers in Scotland. STARRETT UK only made the the round expensive type.. interestingly enough the original tooling drawings which came from the parent company in USA were drawn as far as I can remember around 1916 . in junior high in woodworking we had the winged adjusters on the calipers. I had never seen them after that. I looked for them but had not seen them at any garage sale or estate sale. The inside calipers have saved me a few times where I could not use telecoping inside snap gauges because of a narrowing exit.

I like the tool maker style. They are elegant and a delight to use. They also make me feel smug and snooty when I use them. I didn't even know about the Fay style. I want them now. I use my calipers mostly in the wood shop.

Thanks Lyle. i recently used an inside caliper to measure the width of a slot. I think it was the only time in my life i used one. When i worked I had all the measuring tools i could ever need. In my home shop I have to make due. 👍

Interesting to me Mr. Pete, and I’m sure to many more tool junkies. Please keep them coming. The small inside calipers work really well for measuring O ring and snap ring grooves in bores, if you don’t have expensive groove micrometers or some other such fancy tools.

The Fay-type calipers are so sleek and elegant looking, and feel good in the hand. The asymmetric caliper looks like a wall-thickness caliper, sort of like a tubing micrometer.

The Yankee has flat legs, tool makers have round legs, and the Faye design starts square tapering to it's tip. A lot of options for a simple tool!

amazing! the quick slide nut I had no idea of. Such a neat thing!! I will be lookout now, I pick these up at estate sales for next to nothing. I have enough that I dont even grab them when I see one unless its a unique one. ofcouse all are starretts! I have some giant ones too, 18" or so, they are a beauty and make very nice display pieces!. Now if its rusty and stained. using CLR on it for a few minutes and cleaning with a wire brush afterwards leaves them looking new. after CRL, i will wash it, and then quickly use baking soda to put on it to neutralize the acid from the CLR. Otherwise it will go yellow with staining.

Very interesting- thanks! I had a fresh look at my caliper and divider collection. :) About the prices in the 1920s - I found some info about wages: In 1921 a US tool and die maker made about 90 cents an hour. So even the Yankee style caliper would represent a couple of hours' wages in those days. Fast forward to 2023 - Starrett prices have increased even more than machinist wages. $75-100 for a 6" caliper! It's amazing that they sell any of them.

As an apprentice i was taught to use an inside caliper to measure bore diameters and transfer the feel to an outsde micrometer you could do it to within a thou with practice

I have always been a fan of the split nut on calipers and although I am out of practice now, in my younger day when using them daily I could hold surprisingly close tolerances with thes instruments. You are never boring, you kids keep my interest going.

I have a drawer full of old calipers and dividers, some of which are Starrett. I was not aware of the spring nut option so I went out to the shop and looked through my collection and behold, I do have one set of Starrett calipers with the spring nut! And on top of that they are the more expensive style. So thank you for the interesting video and the information.

$1.95 in 1924 is a bit over $34 in today's money. When I started at the jeweler's bench in the early 80s one of the first tools I bought was a pair of 3" Starrett Fay Pattern dividers. I think they cost me around $15. I recently picked up on ebay a 6" pair for a very fair price because it needed a bit of an Evapo-Rust bath and the points needed to be reground. Cleaned up like a charm. I suppose the rapid adjusting Herlihy dividers have multiple start screws.

The inflation calc. is ONLY 15x while the current Starrett prices are about 50x to 75x times, so any complaints about inflation pale compared to their increases for labor, materials, packaging, advertising & whatever, besides what is tacked on for the Starrett prestige!

I have an old book that shows how to make gauge blocks, in various sizes, for use with outside spring calipers. Just take small diameter stock (brass, metal, or plastic,) machine the stock to the exact length that you desire your calipers to be set at, and cut a groove lengthwise in the stock. The groove must be slightly wider than the threads on the outside caliper because the threads go through the groove. Now, you can insert the gauge block in between the adjustment nut and the caliper leg, with the groove resting against the threads and your outside spring calipers are pre-set to whatever length that you machined the stock to. In other words, the spring calipers will stay open the exact length of the gauge block. I can see how this would be helpful, especially in wood turning.

I do like the Faye. I think when we are young we wish we had many tools but can't afford them and then when we get older we stock up. Most of us older ones are children of Depression era parents so we hoard things even if it isn't money. My son is set for life for older tools. If he ever gets married and has kids so will they.

Mr Pete I love my Starrett calipers and dividers. I have over 40 different ones ranging from 3" up to 18" . I noticed that Starrett had pictures messed up on the calipers in the latest catalog. check the next page and you will see they have the 38/39 and the 36/37 pictures and description swapped.
