"They were kids that I once knew, they were kids that I once knew" That part reminds me of two boys who were my closest friends for my whole life. Both boys were brothers, and since we were such good friends I was considered their sister. I was so heartbroken when I moved away with my mom and her boyfriend and left everyone behind... I tried to protest and stay with my family, but my mom insisted I move with her. My mother was gone for 8 years, and I'm ten. She was gone for more than half my life. I was raised by my aunt and uncle... I miss those boys a lot.... I never see them... It matches the part, "they were kids that I once knew" I'm so sad. I want to go back but I know I can't.

Remember all those characters you once knew, how you walked beside them on their journey. Laughed with them, cried with them, loved them. Where are they now? Gone. As soon as you flipped to the last page and closed the book, you ended the story. You will never get to see them grow any longer than what you read, you can re-read the book/series as many times as you want...but you will never read further. That is the punishment bestowed upon you when you start a new book, knowing that one day...it will end.

My interpretation: A couple singing about miscarriage. The verses are him asking her what she's going through, and the chorus represents the loneliness a couple feels while going through miscarriage. "They were kids that I once knew" - you imagine your entire life with your new child, it feels like you already know them. "Now they're all dead hearts to you.." When the doctors tell you there's no longer a heartbeat it breaks your whole world, but to them it's just an image on a screen.

@cedricgalleon14357 жыл бұрын
the words of this song portray the female singer being consoled by the male singer after she has apparently had an encounter with ghosts. (Fittingly, as the opening track to a CD called “Five Ghosts” that often invokes imagery of the dead) Personally I imagine it being a foggy dusk, in a small rural town. The male character is eagerly trying to piece together what it is that she saw in her encounter, but she is seemingly shaken - if you’ll notice, she is not actually answering his questions, but speaking out to seemingly no one, as if still in shocked daze. She describes the ghosts as being visions of children she once knew, with “light” in their eyes, and she details the feelings of death and despair that came over her. The chorus talks about “they” (ghosts, or “dead hearts”) being out there, but insists most people fail to recognize it or believe in them. A few of the lines make it clear that this ‘supernatural experience’ is actually a metaphor. “It’s hard to know that you still care,” “Now they’re all dead hearts to you,” etc. The dead hearts represent the narrator having a stirring reflection about the meaningful people and things from her past that she has realized are now “dead” to her. Various people in whose eyes she once saw “light,” the people who once had vibrant, meaningful presences in her life - they have faded over years into distant memories. The song’s meaning is effectively that there are many people you lose and places you leave over a lifetime - sometimes purposefully, sometimes drifting away slowly or unintentionally - and that those dead hearts and forever lost feelings haunt everyone should they choose to realize and reflect upon them.

Such an old song. Can't believe I would have been so young when this song was published. It's a masterpiece though. I feel it relates to life itself very well. The fact we all move on leaving people we once held dear behind or being left behind ourselves. We lose relationships and gain new ones with time as it passes. We are always losing and gaining. This song to me speaks of people we have left behind, lost or forgotten - who were once very important to us.

I listened to this song a lot when I was going through I really rough time in my life. I know that's cliche, but it's true. That was a few years ago, and I'm just now moving forward. I completely forgot the song, until tonight, I was at my school's dance show, and suddenly two girls are up there dancing. I don't know yet why I'm mouthing along all the lyrics, or why I'm holding a hand to my heart and tears are dripping down my face. By the time we get to the chorus, I'm sobbing in the back of a dark theater. So many emotions rushed back. I still have many of the same problems, but I'm getting help and I'm getting better. This song means so much to me, and it always will.

This song means so so much to me because it reminds me of me and my big brother, who I love more than anything on this earth, even myself! When I listen to this song, I always remember how we two always tried to help each other through the rough times as good as we could. Oh, I wish I could've done more for him but now I can't reach him anymore! D:

I randomly remembered this song today after, many years. I don’t know what sparked it. (I first heard due to fandoms - which I’ve fallen out of and have no contact w anymore). I remember listening to this song - weirdly, in my darkest moments when I was being badly bullied & I remember resonating with a lot of lyrics and never thinking I was gonna make it out. And now it’s years later & I have a life, friends & am doing a masters. 😂 The comments on this videos are all old, so I expect no one to see this. I suppose it’s just a lil message to my old self & to any others I suppose - weirdly, life can and does get better and it is a struggle!

This reminds me of Shingeki no Kyojin/attack on titan. This made me imagine levi missing all of his past squad members, eren remembering the people he once knew and alive, mikasa remembering his parents, and all of the remaining people alive remembers the people who are gone. An afterstory wherein the remaining alive people tell their stories to each other and remembering the people who the once knew.

"This song reminds me" of when our innocence and passions, which lie in our hearts, die as the reality and cruelty of this world closes in on us. We are then cut off from love and become just another "Dead Heart".
