Starset is a cinematic rock band, an electronic rock band, and can *sometimes* be melodic metal. The genius behind this is Dustin bates (vocalist, lyricist, keyboard, engineer, mixer) with a talent for detail. You literally just so happened to choose the standout track of the album, a super melodic ballad of softer proportions. The rest of the album is SUPER nuts, if you ever got into it. For future recommendations, I definitely recommend Everglow (a lot more like this track) or Gravity of You, a super heavy song on the album. ❤️

Thank you for the Starset. I would definitely list them as “cinematic rock” but they’re definitely programmatic. Not only does the music have a theme but the band itself has fictional lore associated with it. For more, I’d recommend “Manifest”, “Monster”, or “Telekinetic”

So musically Starset can be described as "Cinematic Rock". That is a pretty broad term however. In general you could say that their core "style" is Rock. They incorporate many different elements though, electro, metal, orchestral and experimental to be exact. They layer their songs to this as well. They have a layer of a crunchy guitar, then one with some electronic sounds, one with a cello, one with the drums and then the singer.

Geebz you actually reacted to a Starset song a few weeks back. But this is one of my favorites by them. Incredible, unique band. They are metal/alt rock but with ann electronic element. But they sit more on the rock/metal side than the EDM side of the fence. They have played rock festivals but you wouldn't see them at an EDM festival

Also I think of them as art rock. All of their songs have a element of story telling that works with the others songs of each album to tell a over arching story in each release. Their live shows are second to none. They bring this exact sound to the stage and combine stage presence and visuals to bring it to life in a way that I have never seen in most bands.

So Starset spent allot of time in Denver in their early career when “My Demons” & “Monster” where gaining traction … having seen them live a handful of times I always tagged them as under the influence of fellow Ohio band Hawthorn Heights crossed with Jon Crosby’s band VAST…alt rock to what is being coined as Cinema Rock …very much a visual audio sensory theater… they are worth seeing live … great vocals … clean sound … often stunning stage shows … multimedia viewing is a must for Starset!

I loooooooooove STARSET, and Vessels is my favorite album of theirs so far. They seriously have zero bad songs in their entire catalog. One of my top two favorite bands. The touring band doesn't actually do any of the creative process or studio recordings, but when they play live shows (they call them demonstrations), they are now a 7 piece band, the extra 3 being violin, cello, and DJ. There is a whole lore behind the band (there's a novel and a graphic novel in collaboration with Marvel, and all the music videos tie in) that makes it interesting for the sci-fi nerds, but the music also stands on its own very well. They also do a lot with technology. They have interactive websites, sometimes they shadow drop videos and you have to figure out how to unlock them with super nerdy puzzles and decryption and stuff. The superfans, called Messengers, sometimes even cosplay for their demonstrations. Saw them live in July for a VIP acoustic show and got to hang out with the six of them (before they added the seventh touring member). They are the nicest people. Saw them again last month for a full demo, but Covid made them have to avoid interacting with the fans as much. The visuals during their full shows are stunning, and they wear costumes that go with the lore. Sometimes it's post-apocalyptic looking outfits, sometimes it's space suits, sometimes they dress as rebels (against the fictional big tech company that's part of the lore). As far as their sound, Dustin (vocalist, songwriter, creative mastermind, literal genius) describes it as cinematic rock. They can go very heavy (see: Telekinetic, Devolution), but they also have a lot of more chill, melodic songs. The first couple of albums have a lot of fry-singing interspersed. It's used a bit more sparingly on the second two albums. There is generous use of electronics/synth, hence adding a DJ to the live lineup, and almost every song has strings. For the ultimate cinematic STARSET, give Trials (reimagine) a listen. It's an experience! They also use baritone guitars and super low tunings. Drop G#, F#, even drop E. A few songs on the new record required an 8 string guitar. Suggestions to check out by STARSET: Telekinetic Icarus Bringing It Down Devolution Point Of No Return Monster Manifest My Demons (recently went platinum!) Kashmir (probably my favorite cover of anything, ever)

Sorry for the third comment, Starset makes their music to be more... like a tie in with a story. Their music videos really capture the songs better when pairing them together. Monster, It has Begun, Devolution, My Demons, and Trials are very well tied in with the visual music videos they provide. I would classify them as bringing the 60's-70's style synth music into the Post 2010's sci-fi type.

Ok, I was with you for the first bar of the song. I can't get past the disconnect between the bass and vocals. I would say that my problem with it is that they're way too far apart in terms of frequency for me personally. Though it gets better when the vocalist really starts to let loose. So it's one of those songs that get better as I listen. Very nice, not many songs can get me to change my tune so easily in the first listen. Good job.

They released a comic novel with Marvel called the Prox Transmissions, and contributed a track called "Infected" to the mobile game Arknights, which also has an anime forthcoming. As far as I know though, they haven't contributed any new work to any movies. They may have songs from their album releases that they approved to be featured in movies, though? I haven't checked for that. Every Starset album in itself could basically be the inspiration behind a movie anyway.

Starset doesn't actually fall into metal category and they certainly aren't a EDM band. They're Alternative/Hard Rock if we have to pinpoint on a single genre. Because there's more room for Alt Rock to discover new elements and implement them in their song. They have a lot of songs that would be labeled as pop and would never be considered metal. In every album, they like to mix new elements with riff driven low tuned guitar. First album was orchestra, second (which is where Ricochet is from) uses EDM, third mashes analog pop elements and the last album mashes synthwave. So its hard to pinpoint on what they would be. The sure thing is that they like to do heavy guitars but soft vocals on verses, sometimes do scream breakdowns and use a lot of electronic regardless of pop/synthwave/analog instruments. They're a rock band that tries to combine elements from metal like distorted riffs with synth world.

I'd definitely recommend Antigravity by them, it's a slower piece (not their slowest by any means) but as a string composer you might enjoy that one, they make some heavy use on the strings especially at the end there's about a 1.5/2min portion of just the instrumentals and the strings are very powerful and beautiful. Starset's whole thing really is space, and future, they lean very heavily into more electronic and uncomfortable to replicate that sort of "space" theme and if you ever check out a live performance by them it very much shows, they even show up on stage in futuristic astronaut suits and such, it's entire experience. If you're looking for one of their slowest and (in my opinion at least) most beautiful tracks, Dark Star is a good one for that, while I believe My Demons, Monster, and Halo are their most popular/known, they're very catchy

They fall inti alternative rock genre, but even that doesn't quite descrive them since they also have elements of pop and metal in their music

I kinda consider starset to be a type of their own. They seem to hit a variety of types of music genres wrapped up into their songs. It's hard to pin down what kind it is.

Whereas I've always considered some quintessential Steve Miller Band's "Book of Dreams" tracks as "Space Rock" because of the ethereal synthesizers, the first Starset album was SPACE THEMATIC LYRICALLY as well. This is like 30 Seconds To Mars had a bastard love child with actual Martians listening to space sounds.

Starset classifies themselves as "cinematic rock" and if you listen to any of their albums you'd see why.. every track is like a movie, it takes you on a journey and tells an overall narrative throughout each entire album.

They're a cinematic rock band, but I'd put the genre as space rock/metal.

They truly are a one of a kind sir. It's okay if you strain to genre place them. They identify as cinematic rock. I describe them as electronic orchestral rock.
