Musk drops a huge amount of information, including confirmation of a Starship flame trench?! Starship Pad 2 is just around the corner, and it will be even taller and very different! China copying Falcon 9 while its rockets “land” on… villages? Falcon Heavy reaches 10 flights, and the Redline heli gets a birds-eye view of Starbase. Sue-Origin strikes again! What is it this time?

One possible explanation for the height of the launch tower being the same but accommodating taller stacks would be a shorter OLM. With a flame trench the OLM may not need to be as tall.

How enthusiastic are you about space?😊 At what age did you realize this and how deep is your knowledge about this technology? I came from the Philippines and I've been following NASA's progress even before I moved here in America some 40 years ago. Unfortunately, you may find it odd that there are not too many Filipinos here in the US who share the same enthisiasm as you have about the subject of space and space exploration. That's why I'm always very cautious about my casual conversations with my other FIlipino friends and associates and I usually avoid talking to them about this subject. I hope you'll continue your enthusiasm and who knows, if your young enough to be able to pursue science or engineering career you'll someday become a SpaceX employee!😊

If you see Orange propellant RUN away. When I was driving an 18 wheeler out by Edwards AFB they where testing a Solid Rocket Booster ( SRB ) It threw up a huge cloud of Orange smoke. I was scared, I thought I was going to die. But the SRB orange gases are ok, Orange gases from a liquid fueled rocket are very deadly. I believe it was in White Sands NM. that the Lunar Module leaked out causing the town near bye to be evacuated, Back in the 60's. Thanks for the video. You Rock. :)

Actually the SRB's used solid fuel named ammonium perchlorate composite propellant made of ammonium perchlorate, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene and aluminium mixed together in a form of rubber. The exaust fumes were dangerous to humans en enviroment. They consisted of hydrogen chloride that in contact with water vapor produces hydrochloric acid. On the other hand the fuel of the orbiter consisted of hidrogen en oxigen that when mix together produces only water.

@@Mentaculus42 yeah, it's a bit like when they invoke national security for something that doesn't need it. I only mentioned it as during the Elon interview with EA he started to speak about heatshields and then stopped mentioning ITAR. I guess with footage of the heating/burn through in the engine bay could let someone work out heat shield performance, that they probably already know about. 🤷‍♂️
@Mentaculus42
@Mentaculus42 2 күн бұрын
@@Codysdab Good catch, when he said that and then invoked ITAR I was pretty sure it was for a completely different reason. Considering that some of this is from space shuttle era and everything that has been said is freely available online. It is possible that they are using something newer but the older versions could be referenced to cover that. It was the clumsy transition to ITAR that suggests something different.

How about a flame spreader and redirector, with a water deluge system: basically a spike surrounded with a toroidal trench that redirects the blast up and away at a 30 degree (or so) angle from the ground, and in a 360 degree spread all around and away from the launch pad. This *SHOULD* diffuse the blast enough to allow for rapid reusability.

Having some minimal control over a spent stage doesn’t take up anything like a booster landing in terms of fuel. The rocket fires up and moves slower at the start burning anything near the base. by the time the rocket rises, the arm will swing away. The rocket will pass by the raised quick disconnect area faster reducing the damage to anything in that area. They need to move as much away from the base as possible

I think the Starship is gloriously overbuilt, as the melting but functional flaps or the hard to break-up hull at flight one proved it. I think this gives a lot of space to play, and after they figure out the basics, they could potentially shave off ridiculous amounts of weight in the long run.

The future they will be able to build 3 legged launch towers and name them after the British SF TV series "The Tripods,". They would have 3 triangular legs with a tri- directional flame trench coming out between the legs. The isoscoles section legs will have water nozzels along the leading edge and will guide the flames back into the three trenches. Behind one leg will be the tower which will be wedge shaped as well thus allowing much more efficient megazilla arms with a forward and rear post track for reduced motion and better vibration and shake control.

On 18:45, the chinese ppear to be using a catch system that I myself have suggested 4 years ago that Space X use. 🙂Glad to see someone else thinks it's a good idea. I imagined it working from 3 towers perhaps, and more like a camera aperture does when closing around a central point. This is also how the Canada arm works roughly speaking. it made sense to me as you don't have massive inertia in the system, like you do with the arms, so it can move much faster. Also, you don't have to be so accurate as the "ropes" deform around the hull and close to accommodate the cylindrical shape of the rocket. There are problems with this method, like snapping cables under load, but kevlar cables should be able to take the force involved was my thinking. Also, ship damage might be a problem as the cables snap around the structure. Other problems exist too and of course, you'd need to build 3 towers and angle them outwards I guess to counteract the inward lateral loads. Every system has it's trafe offs I guess. Still, I quite like this idea tho & prefer it to the "chop sticks" approach.

I think we are a ways away from Falcon Heavy being set aside. BFR / Starship is several years away from being operational. Also, there is going to be a significant cost differential between Falcon Heavy and BFR / Starship for several years until production and launch cadence gets up to speed.

naaaah. I think starship could be "operational" this year. they've shown they can get it to space 3 times now, and twice that it can withstand being in space. they could send a payload on the next flight this month if they wanted to, booster/ship recovery or not. they simply don't want to yet. really they could start sending up payloads to orbit by starship and then after payload they can send the ship back down into the atmosphere for re-entry and landing tests. they can launch payloads and conduct re-usability testing at the same time without endangering payloads. if they're sending the ships up there anyways and they know it will get up there, why not send payload with them? the re-usability testing comes at the end anyways right? then of course consider that starship launches are now ramping up in frequency, they may well recover 2 boosters and a ship this year. they also may not, but definitely will by some time next year. one re-launch of a flown booster and/or ship and re-usability is established, even if the 1st re-flight test has some issues. at the very latest I think SpaceX will be launching payloads with starship before the end of next year, not "several years away". I also do not believe there will be a "Huge cost gap for several years" between starship and falcon heavy. the 1st "operational" launches that carry payload, may not be re-flown boosters and ships, and may not carry max payload capacity. so yes those 1st flights would surely cost far more than a Falcon 9 launch and even a falcon heavy launch. but if SpaceX flies even just 7 more starship flights between now and the end of next year, they will surely have payload on "re-flights" the year after. those flights would cost significantly less than "1st flights" of starships and booster would and that would be just 2 years from now. from the moment starship 1st successfully deploys a payload, Falcon Heavy will be "nearly" obsolete. with the pace that SpaceX moves along, Falcon Heavy will be truly Obsolete no more than a year after.

@@nonya-bizness The can't obsolete Falcon Heavy for Starship until Starship has payload bay doors that can launch cargoes the size that Falcon Heavy can release. The PEZ dispenser for starlink is one thing, for generic bulky payloads it is another.

@@Scanner9631 yeah but they probably already have several payload door/dispenser designs put together that they may start trying out with some of V2 starships. it likely wouldn't take more than a few launches to figure out what works best.

I predict that within my lifetime the most rapid turnaround for the orbital stage will be 2-4 weeks. And I feel like I am being very optimistic. On the other hand, the booster stage might actually achieve same week turnaround. I don’t think we will see reliable same day turnarounds. As such, to deliver a large volume of launches will require a larger volume of hardware. It looks to me that Space X’s orbital payload delivery capacity in the next 10 years is going to blow waay past orbital payload delivery demand. This will constrain the growth of the starship orbital program. If they can develop a reliable global hop transport service… that will be the big business. There is an order of magnitude of orders of magnitude more demand for activity on the earths surface than in orbit. Cheers!

The Falcon 9 booster turnaround is already less than a week, including the time it takes for the drone ship to return. The Raptor engine is cleaner than the Merlin and should not require refurbishment, getting its time down to hours or minutes. The orbital stage will take time to return, but the idea is to build many of them, so that a fresh one is always ready to be stacked when the booster is. Which leaves time needed for the launch mount/tower, which is also supposed to be zero. There's also the fueling infrastructure though.

Not to forget the Orange Cloud that was spewing out of its engine as it fell. If that was a cloud of Nitric Oxide then it just dumped a bunch of Nitric Acid all over those villages. So claims of no injuries from that is a virtual impossibility.

"Cant ignore". I love your videos and your humor. And always look forward to them. The 2nd tower could also be there in case the Starship has an aborted take-off and has to land again. If the captured booster is then hanging on the other tower, a 2nd capture device could be an advantage. And yes, Tim's interviews with Elon are always great. It was also impressive to see how huge it all is. On the launch site as well as in the new production halls! But it's also such a perfect pairing because they both share a passion for rockets and space travel. The spirit of Team Space, as can also be felt in your channel. By the way: the analyses of the Starshiptest by Scott Manley and Marcus House on Fraiser Cain's channel (universe today) are also great every time. As are the talks on the NSF live (NASAspaceflight live) channel and the show on the TMRO (Spaceflight tomorow) channel. Thank you very much Felix and team for doing such a good job!
