Unless they've got attitude control on the dummies the camera movement will start the satellite rotating. Space is awkward for things like that. Probably best to have a 360 camera like they use on those buoys, no moving parts = no inertia.

It would be interesting if they really end up switching to a metallic heat shield, or a metallic heat shield in combination with active cooling. The metallic tile tests seem to indicate that ceramic tiles have more problems than they originally anticipated.

@robinseibel754015 күн бұрын
@@Supac617 That's not going to happen. SpaceX is under contract for a lunar landing vehicle, and that's certainly not ready. Then there's a lot more that has to be sorted, namely the launch window, the return window, etc. Optimal launch windows occur about every 26 months. The shortest missions possible would be 1.1-1.8 years (total mission time), but those missions would require fast transit and a lot of energy for the orbital transfers. Lower energy missions would last 2 or more years longer. In either case, you need a lot of food, a lot of energy generation in transit and while on Mars, energy to get back into Martian orbit, etc. Then there's all the oxygen that has to be produced and carried. Where's the fuel for return coming from? Then there's all the training/practice, test flights, etc. None of that has happened yet. And SpaceX cannot do it alone. Maybe it could happen in 10-15 years. Maybe. I'll bet 20 years is a more reasonable guess. "Colonization" of Mars? That's not going to happen in the next 30-40 years.

The space industry is poised to welcome skilled professionals from the traditional oil and gas sectors, creating exciting new opportunities for growth and innovation. These individuals are accustomed to working under high pressure and managing difficult gases, as well as navigating large and complex infrastructures with extensive automation. For a worker experienced in drilling 5 km deep oil wells on a platform 500 km offshore, constructing a space rocket launch facility feels like a simple task.

I mean if sx intended starship to land in the water (large scale/ long term) starship would look like a boat! Excitement guaranteed!
@knowledgeisgood964516 күн бұрын
The reason the ship has to land on water (and get destroyed) is because it is only licensed to land on water - this time. Besides, there is no way to catch it with the tower. To do that the ship needs hooks like the booster (to land on), and it can't do so while the booster is still between the chopsticks. The booster has to have time to be made safe, to then place it on a stand and moved it away before the ship can try to land. That in turn means it has to get to orbit and remain there for some hours.
@Michael-jd5vf15 күн бұрын

Why dont they cover the launch mount with the heat tiles?
@michaeldeierhoi409615 күн бұрын
This issue has been addressed many times as people have also suggested tiles on the OLM legs mm . Basically the tiles are intended to withstand the compressed atmosphere on reentry which causes them to heat up. They would be shredded by the high heat and thrust energy from the raptors. Look at what those raptors did to concrete which was designed to handle high heat on ITF-1?!
